I’ve kinda broken my rule about not starting a second pair til I finish a pair but I’m trying to make Christmas gifts and each of those single socks started out as a gift and then once the sock was on its way to being finished, I decided it didn’t really suit the personality of the person for whom it was being made.
The pair on the left is made from Opal DK yarn and I love that yarn (I think I love all yarn though!) It’s a bit thicker and they’re really warm. I originally intended for these socks to be for me.
The red/blue yarn is Fortissima’s Socka Colori yarn and I like it a lot. I think I’ll make myself some mittens to match it and maybe even a cap. I bought several more balls of this yarn.
The unfinished sock is Opal Rodeo. It was also going to be a gift but I don’t like the way the stripes are working — they’re too big and bulky — I think I like dainty striping better.
The sock on the right is from Opal Petticoat yarn. I like that one too but I tried reducing the stitches after doing the leg part and it ended up being a bit snug on my foot so I know it will be too small for its intended recipient. It isn’t so snug that I can’t wear it comfortably.
So, what’s a girl to do with all these socks that aren’t quite right for gifting? Just finish them for myself but as I finish each sock and realize it isn’t going to work for a gift, I start another one in hopes of actually getting some acceptable gifts made.
I think I like using 2.5 mm needles for most of these yarns. What size needles are you all using on these type yarns?

I love tee yarn. I never used Opal yet because the store I go to buy the yarn only sells Regia whitch belongs to Coats.
When the yarn has 4 threads I would use 2.5 mm.
i don’t knit but i’ve enjoyed seeing the socks that everyone has been showing on their blogs. Love all the socks you’ve made. Very nice colors
I think you’re being way too critical of those socks. I think they’re perfect!
Opal is a nice yarn, but you should try Brown Sheep, Trekking (XXL) or the absolutely luscious colors of Cherry Tree Hill. I use a set of 5″ 2.75mm Brittany birch hardwood needles. I recently purchased a set of bamboo needles to try.
I think the socks are great, but if you really have no-one to give them too, what about some charity? CIC comes to mind, I’m sure there are others though.
You are going to wind up with a lot of pairs of socks, I think! =)
I share a birthday with Chad!
I think they are just wonderful socks…they would all make for very happy feet!
Awesome socks. I like sock #2 the best. I have lots of sock yarn but have yet to learn to knit one.
