String Challenged

March 6, 2007

Why are things that should be simple never simple for me? I get confused if I don’t have written instructions that I can follow step by step. I drew this out in EQ and this is going to be my string quilt and it’s going to use up lots of green for my March Stash Reduction Challenge.

Because everyone is probably already laughing at me because I can’t seem to make a simple string block, I won’t tell you all the mistakes I made but trust me . . there are more possible more ways to screw up a string block than you might think.

The first four blocks I made (actually I made 7 before I got four that were right!) I didn’t like because the center star was too dark and didn’t show up at all. They’ll go somewhere but not in this quilt. I drew out some more paper squares and made more. I like these better.

I’m making 9″ blocks and this is four of them put together to create the star in the center. Then I’ll get another star on the outer edges when more blocks are added. Make sense. I’m hoping to get a few more blocks made tomorrow but . . I should be cleaning the car and packing!

Well, I like the blocks a lot but I think you kind of defeated the whole *mindless* stress-less string block thing!

Judy, the quilt has “YOUR” look all over it. It’s gorgeous. But it looks somewhat difficult to achieve, was it? The colors are exciting! Because of you, lime green has entered my life, my friend. Remember at RIM when you came to my rescue with a spool of lime green thread? Great quilt!!!

love the star, but I’m not sure I could “plan” sew a string quilt…. ;-)

You may not have achieved your own goal, but I think they are rather wonderful! Many of us are going mindless sewing with our strings, but on the contrary, this ‘simple’ process can turn out something quite extraordinary.

Love the dark center.

I love your quilt plan. . .but understand your dilemna. I think I am the only person alive that can’t paper piece myself out of a paper bag!!! I can measure 10 times & then cut once & I still end up without enough fabric. . .and people laugh when I cut a 5″ piece to cover a 1″ spot!

Go pack, have a good time & when you come back to the quilt I bet everything will just fall into place.

The blocks are beautiful, even the one that has a darker center. Hope you have fun in Louisiana – unless it isn’t something that is supposed to be fun.

I really like the game of colours in the central block! It looks like a spinning top! How is it going in your new house? ciao, ciao

Your string blocks looks very good.
I will stay with my few project for the rest of the month. Come April, I will joint the stash reducing gang again – when I can lift my own fabric boxes myself :-)
