Nine Patch Extravaganza

April 6, 2007

A while back, my friend Becky told me that my book was on the “Upcoming Titles” list on the AQS web page and I saw it there. Then it was gone and I wondered what happened but today while I was looking for another book, I saw it on their regular book list. It isn’t out yet but I believe it will be released in late summer/early fall.

I love that part of the title is in Lime Green (and I didn’t ask for that!).

It’s been a long process . . it’s been fun and at times a bit frustrating. The fun part was coming up with the designs, getting the call that my proposal had been accepted, making and quilting the quilts. The only real frustrating part for me was that I’m so bad with graphics. I can barely muddle my way through getting a picture posted on the internet and then I had to figure out how to get triangles instead of squares into my document; how to draw a rotary cutter on top of a ruler on top of fabric. Then, IF I figured out how to do it and had to go back and make changes, I didn’t have a clue how I had done it the first time.

I suppose if you’ve done the Quilt for an Hour projects, you know my writing style and the book is written similarly. Here’s what AQS says on the web site:

Use of these exciting design techniques turns the familiar Nine-Patch into breathtakingly original quilts. Clear and concise cutting instructions, easy construction techniques, and great designs will tempt quilters of all levels of experience to try these projects. The clearly illustrated instructions ensure great results.

The editors assured me my instructions and drawings were fantastic. Amazing!

I’ll bet Vince wishes he had a dime for every time I said “I can’t do whatever you’re asking me to do because I’m working on the book!”

I’m sure authors write books for many reasons but my main reason is that I want some quilter 100 years from now to see my book and wonder about my life, my quilts, my family . . just how things were in the early 21st century for quilters. I rarely look at an old book that I don’t wonder about the life of the writer, whether it’s a cookbook, a quilt book, or . . well, those are about the only books I read and think much about!

Besides being a mom, this book has been one of my biggest undertakings and I’m so thrilled to see it almost ready to hit store shelves and bookshelves of my quilting buddies!

Judy, I’ve been waiting for this! Maybe they’ll announce it in the next mailing. As soon as it’s available I’m ordering a copy but I want to get your signature on it too next time I see you after I have it. I love that lime green on the cover, it says “JUDY” to me. I wish I had been able to see the actual quilts with you in Paducah a few weeks ago. It would be wonderful to find it on the shelves in Paducah at the quilt show but is that wishful thinking? WAY TO GO, JUDY!
