Melting in MO

August 9, 2007

It’s so darned hot! Summer is not my favorite season but I’m so thankful for having the basement and having all my quilting paraphernalia down there. It stays much cooler in the basement . . even though the a/c does run down there too, it doesn’t run nearly as much as it does upstairs. When I had the house in town in Kentucky, there was no basement and on the hot days, the air conditioner just ran and ran and ran. My neighbors, who obviously didn’t have hot flashes, laughed at me because my a/c never shut off. Last summer, it ran for seven days straight — didn’t even shut off at night. I had two different air conditioner people come out and look at it and they assured me it was working right but it was so hot, no trees and not much insulation in the little house. Then, we had a storm and the electricity went out. When the lights went out, my neighbors accused me of having used all the electricity! So, remembering how warm it stayed in that house on these miserably hot days, I’m very thankful for my basement.

I mostly don’t go out too much but today I had to run errands. I love my Honda CRV but on a scale of 1 – 10, the air conditioner rates about a 2. Stopping and starting, stopping and starting . . it just stays miserable in the car. I started to drive the Highlander, poor car never gets driven — its a/c rates a 10, but I’m more comfortable running around in my little CRV. I had to go to the vet to get more treats and take Speck’s medical records (shots and report for the orthopedic vet in Murray, KY), met Vince to get a burger at The White Grill (even though he forgot he was supposed to meet me there and came home first, realized I wasn’t here and ding, ding, ding . . he remembered!), then to the library, then to the post office, then to the grocery store. It’s too hot to cook tonight so we’re having baguette, fruit and cheese and maybe a little wine with that!

The forecast isn’t looking very cool for next week either but I have hope Fall is just around the corner. Ok . . that’s a bit optimistic but just let me think that, ok?

What’s the temp in your area? Are you staying cool?

It’s 80 and dry here today in MA. It’s been so hot and humid lately. Today is a very welcome change. Tomorrow they are forecasting rain and 70′s….I can deal with that too.

93 with heat index of 99 up here in the KC-MO metro area. Yesterday was 97 with heat index of 107. Can’t wait for fall as I have those “personal summers” you mentioned and it seems they become less frequent as the weather cools.

It’s about 103 and I’m staying in for the duration. I’m lucky, I can telecommute for work (health reasons) so I can work comfortably from my little “allergy bubble”.

100 degrees in the armpit of the valley at work, dry, dusty, smoggy – and they’re sauteeing onions today in that food packaging business down the street. LOL

It was unseasonably cool the past few days here in the Bay Area. We live in the East Bay valley and it is ususally 10-15 degrees hotter there than at the bay/coast where we work, so we see the difference daily. After a couple of weeks of the high 90s, this week, with its 70s and 80s, has been really welcome. It is supposed to stay this way for another few days.
It is only 68 degrees near work today!!

Weather Pixie says it’s 104 in Nashville right now. Don’t wanna know what the “real feel” is.

I watched the weather news last night and felt very, very sorry for my blogging friends in the midwest. We are enjoying weather in the high 70′s and loving every minute of it, but things will even out in October when we heat up and you all cool down.

You have my sympathies–I hate summer!

Presently 79 from a high of 94 with horrible humidity. Status quo for the West coast of Florida. Got about 4 more months before things begin to cool off.

80 something here today but with the humidity feels like 90 something. Wet, muggy, and more wet. Summer in Illinois — gotta love it!

It was 95, but it felt like 195!

There is no relief in sight for a few days either. I posted about what I did today and I will be doing the same thing tomorrow. Ugh!

In Plant City (just outside of Tampa) our high today was 93, but the heat index was 116. Miserable even by Florida standards.

Sure wish I had a basement too.

It’s been terribly hot and muggy, but today it rained and now it’s much better. I was so excited to get an email from AQS with info on your new book about nine patches! Congratulations, Judy! I will be sure to order.

Here in Sacramento, we’ve had an oddly cool (for us) summer. Last Monday we set a record low–didn’t even get into the 80s! Now we’re up around the low 90s and will stay right around there. Normally we don’t have hardly any humidity, but we’ve had some lately. And it cools off in the evenings and mornings. Very nice–I really, really hate the heat, and typically our temps are over 100 degrees for much of the summer. I’ll see what I can do to send some of this nice weather your way . . .

It’s been hot here this week but not too bad. Coming from the South summer here just doesn’t get that hot and sticky in my opinion!

We head for San Diego tomorrow and are there until Wed. I just checked the weather – highs will in in the upper 70′s and by the time we get back here highs in the low 80′s. Sounds wonderful to ME.

Palmer, Alaska is a beautiful 67, low of 47 tonight. We’ve had a rainy and cool summer but a sunny day here is absolutely gorgeous.
I grew up in the south but I don’t miss that heat. Weeellll, maybe in March when it’s dark and cold and snowy and the daffodils should be blooming. Schedule a summer trip to Alaska!

We hit a record high of 102 a couple days ago with humidity so thick you can see the air.

The heat is supposed to break soon.

Same old story in western NEbraska HOT! And oddly, we have humidity – strange. Hovering around 100 degrees for weeks! We are fortunate that it cools down at night to upper 50s, or 60, so we still have open windows. NO air conditioners are keeping things cool – may as well put up with until fall. I’m doing a lot of blogging in the basement, where my computer is.

It has been hot and very muggy here in north central Indiana for well over a week and very little relief in sight. How hot and muggy do you ask? So hot that my husband has been driving to work, he says it is too hot to ride the motorcycle!

Near Philadelphia — 95 and humid yesterday; 81 so far today, still humid. When we were in Greece last month, it was between 100 and 115 each day (and the day we left, 123!) but there was always a bit of a breeze, no humidity, and as long as I could find a bit of shade once in a while and keep drinking my water, I was fine.

This has been a mighty hot summer, though.

19C is around 66F

Upcountry Hawaii our weather does not change much, just the wind volume. We are in terrible drought so no humidity, high was about 74, trade winds 8 – 13 mph. Pretty nice.

It hardly ever tops 18C here (that would be mid-60′s F). We had 2 “hot” days the end of July and I begged DH to put my AC’s in, which he did – and I ran them for only 2 days! The other day Little Boy and I went whale watching and he wore a winter hat and winter coat!!! When the fog rolls in and we get a breeze off the Bay of Fundy, it is pretty cool. We wear light weight fleece jackets on many days! The biggest disappointment for me in moving to somewhere so cool – good luck growing tomatoes!

Cheers!

Evelyn
