OK. I’ve seen inside. While it’s pretty disgusting, I think it can be fixed up and be pretty cute. And, the fact that the building Vince wants is right behind our house and the house is just in front of the building — so darned close! The house is OLD and has been neglected. Before we can start to make a decision, we have to get someone out to survey the structure. There are some soft spots in the floor, both downstairs and upstairs. It stinks real bad — like a very untrained pet has lived there. The carpet is shag . . probably what was once very tall shag. When you walk in from the front door, there’s a living/family room across the width of the house — probably about 12 feet deep and maybe 18 feet long. Then you walk into I guess what would have been a dining room. It’s about 14 feet wide and probably 10 feet deep. There is some gorgeous woodwork in the living room and dining room – a built in china cabinet. To the left behind the dining room is a kitchen with a really big pantry. To the right behind the dining room is a bathroom that you can walk through to get to the added on bedroom. You can also get to that bedroom from the kitchen. All the ceilings need to be re-done, all the walls need to be redone, the kitchen needs to be gutted, all the floor coverings need to be replaced. We can do the ceilings, walls and painting ourselves.
It’s a project I really wouldn’t mind taking on. I think Vince needs something to occupy his time and maybe he’d be happier with everything. The timing is good because we could be doing most of the work while it’s cool and not in the middle of 100+ degree weather. We can even fix the house and sell it and keep the back half of the land if we decide to do that. Or, we can buy the whole thing, sell the house as it is and keep the back half of the land — probably a better idea financially. Maybe I’ve been watching too much house flipping but I would like to totally re-do the house if I didn’t have to worry about money.
I think upstairs might just be used for storage. I’m not at all sure I’d ever want to sleep there. Maybe with a lot of work, I’ll see it differently. Hopefully we’ll be able to get someone out to do an inspection this week and we’ll know what we’re facing as far as expensive repairs.

Sounds like once it is cleaned up a bit it would be perfect for a quilting studio. Long arm in the living room, sewing, cutting ironing in the dining room, stash storage every where else! LOL I’d love a whole building just for my quilting. The quilting machine takes up so much room….
Just saw your post on the Quilt House. I love the idea!!! I hope you get it. I must tell you this was the funniest post I think I’ve ever seen on a blog. I mean, is this e-v-e-r-y quilters fantasy or WHAT??? I’ll be rooting for you. Be sure to keep us “posted” (pun intended!).
How exciting, I hope this comes off! My sister Keryn had a Quilt Cottage once, like yours it was on an adjoining block and was the best fun we’d had since buiding ‘cubbies’ when we were children. There was quilting stuff everywhere, in the kitchen, the bedrooms, the living room….bliss! I do hope this eventuates, we’d have SUCH fun tagging along for the ride. I don’t suppose it would help if you told Vince it would give you something to blog about….
Sounds interesting! I’ll be watching to see how it turns out!
Wow! Two houses. I think I would love that!
We have a very narrow single garage with a room added on to it. I have often thought, when the boys get older, that I would turn that space into my quilting area. Wouldn’t make sense now because I don’t have the time to quilt as much as I would like to. Though, I am hoping as they get older I will have the time!
Judy, I have just been catching up on your posts.
How lovely for you, if you can get that house to use. I will send realy positive vibes your way.
The grass looks so lush & green!
I got to do something like this for my quilting business. You turn the second house into a business proposition… Judy & Vince buy the property and then rent it to Sunshine Quilts. The quilt business “pays” rent, the repairs and expenses might be deductable and you have lots of room for quilting, writing more books and having classes and seminars…can I book my space now???
Leslie
yep, this sounds like a very good Winter project. But the best part is you wouldn’t have to live in the midst of the remodel!
Sounds spectacular…I think Leslie has a great plan.
Sounds “perfect”! I mean, if it really were perfect maybe someone would come along and snap it up, or there would be a bidding war, or the price would be out of this world… amazing what a little fixing up can do… you might have to use kilz paint for 1st coat to get rid of smell – and you might even have to replace subflooring if it is indeed pet smell as it would have permeated… but probably all do-able. And, USA is so lucky to have Home Depot and other great building stores – a new kitchen and whatever else is so simple now – you don’t even have to go to those super expensive kitchen stores! Just talk up that metal building to Vince – the house is bonus!
Cheers!
