Making this star is so simple using the Tri-Recs™ rulers made by EZ Quilting.
Let’s make this star. Let’s make it 9″ finished (9-1/2″ unfinished).
Cut one 3-1/2″ background strip and one 3-1/2″ star point strip. (My background is white on white and my star point is pink).
Using the background fabric, you can layer it so that you’re cutting through 4 layers. Lay your “Tri Tool” down, aligning the bottom line that says “3-1/2″ on the bottom of your strip. Cut on both sides. You only need 4 of these triangles for one block so if you’ve just cut through 4 layers, you’re finished with this tool. If you need more of these triangles, flip it around so that the line that says “3-1/2″ is at the top. Continue cutting just one side and flipping it around until you get the number of triangles that you need. Remember . . for this exercise, we need just 4 of them.
From this same background strip, cut 4 – 3-1/2″ squares.
From the star point fabric, again cut through 4 layers if you’re comfortable doing that. Be sure you have your fabric with wrong sides together so you’ll get a left and right side each time you cut. Lay the “Recs-Tool” down as shown below. Line up the 3-1/2″ line with the bottom of your strip. Cut along both sides. (If you started out with a straight edge and lined that up with the straight edge of the Recs-Tool, you should only need to cut the angled side.
See that little notched edge at the top right of the ruler . . whack that part of your fabric off.
You will need 8 of these triangles. Flip it around and keep cutting until you have 8 of them.
Cut one 3-1/2″ square from this fabric.
- 4 – 3-1/2″ background squares
- 1 – 3-1/2″ star point square
- 4 – background triangles from the Tri-Tool
- 8 – star point triangles from the Recs Tool
Lay one of the star point triangles onto one of the background triangles as shown. See how the bottom edge lines up so that when you make your 1/4″ seam, it all works out perfectly?
Sew all four right sides to the background triangles.
Press. I press my seam allowances towards the star point fabric always.
Add the star point fabrics to the left side. Sew using 1/4″ seams. Notice how the tiny triangles sticking over the top of the block line up?
I trim the little points/tails off the top and off each side.
Add 3-1/2″ background squares to each side of two of the units you’ve just made.
Add a point unit to each side of the star point square.
Press. I press the seam allowances in the bottom and top rows towards the outside and the center row toward the center.
Sew the rows together. I always sew with the top or bottom row facing up so I can be sure I sew right through that “V” where the seams intersect and I get a good point there.

Great tutorial! I actually “get it”. Now if I only had the rulers……..The as yet unnamed, one hour/day quilt is lovely…..liz
Looks easy enough.
love your tutorial. Very Nice!
You’ll be proud of me. I waited until we had a bit of room. We’re working on our emergency fund again, we’re caught up on (most of) our bills, and only then set up some extra for blow. I had enough in my blow fund, that I bought a set of these. I’m going to use them for the first time in 5 minutes.
Thanks for the good directions.
Hugs,
Melinda
You use the 4 1/2″ line for a 12″ (finished) square, right?
Hugs,
Melinda
thanks for the tutorial I am going to try it and if I succeed then I will join the quilt for an hour, I will let you know!!
Thank you Judy… I should have read this before I cut all of the points with the strips laying face up LOL…… back to the drawing board.
Nancy
Thanks for a great tutorial!!!
