See what’s on my calendar for today! “Amish Store Opens!” Doesn’t take much to excite me. I was up bright and early, thinking of all the goodies they might have. I quilted til Vince got up, fixed breakfast and though we needed to finish the chicken pen, I suggested we run up to the Amish Store before getting started with things around here. Lots of people must’ve had this date marked on their calendars because there was a crowd.
I love living in my small town but the one (and probably ONLY) thing I dislike is that our fruits and vegetables in the stores are never very fresh and sometimes, they’re downright gross. Not at the Amish Store. Everything is fresh and smells like real fruit or vegetables.
Look how fresh those things are! There are seedless cucumbers, tomatoes, green tomatoes, kohlrabi, zucchini, snow peas, lettuce, broccoli and strawberries.
One of my favorite potato dishes is New Potatoes with Milk Gravy. The reason I don’t make them more often is that I hate scraping the potatoes. I usually end up using my fingernail which stays reddish brown for days. These potatoes were so fresh, I just washed them and rubbed them with a paper towel and the skins came right off. The strawberries are so sweet! I have a strawberry pie in the fridge already! The potatoes have been boiled. Some will be cooked tonight with butter and parsley and some will go into milk gravy tomorrow.
Next week, I’m going on Friday and hopefully it won’t be nearly as crowded as it was today. We’ll be able to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables from the Amish Grocery til it closes sometime in the Fall. I’m happy!

Sounds so yummy. We have an Amish market outside of Dover, but it’s about an hour away from here. Luckily, we have a few good produce stands in the countryside towns not far away that we frequent during the summer. And one of the supermarket chains (Harris Teeter) is a mile from me and they are very particular about their fresh fruits and veggies and can always be counted on for quality….way better than any supermarket I’ve ever used in my nearly 42 years of marriage!
Oh….yes….can you save me a piece of the strawberry pie?
Well Judy………I’m green with envy………the produce looks so good, it will be at least 6 weeks before our garden is producing (no Amish here)……nothing is better than milk gravy with new potatoes………..I will tell you, our aspargus patch is in full production so we have had some fresh vege’s.

My mother-in-law introduced me to new potatoes with milk gravy, but she would add a healthy dose of freshly snipped dill and called it dill gravy. Oh, I want some right now!!! mmmm
I had to look up what kohlrabi is. Never heard of it before. Your veggies look great. I guess I take those for granted out here, but I saw how bad they were in the market when I went home last fall.
I think I need to Google new potatoes with milk gravy as I don’t really know what that is.
We call them creamed potatoes and put in some fresh peas. Oh boy, are they yummy. I will have to try some dill too.
OK, I must be a heathen or something. I’ve been a scratch cook since I was in college (low sodium diet; required by migraines) but have NEVER peeled/scraped/removed skin from new potatoes. The skin just tastes too good to remove.
That said, I will have to try this “carbohydrate enhanced” method of cooking them…it sounds absolutely terrific.
In this recipe, the skins sometimes flake off after cooking and then I lose all my good, crispy coating. That’s why I scrape the skins off before cooking these.
I loved going to the amish store there off of 121 I think it is down by Humansville. I loved their veggies and their breads were wonderful.
Judy, could you share your strawberry pie recipe?? It’s only 7am here in MT and I am drooling thinking that sure would be good for breakfast!
I had to smile at your comment about fruit and vegetable smelling like it should. I pick up every vegetable and every fruit and smell it before I put it in my cart. If it doesn’t smell like it should it doesn’t go in my cart. I get stares from other customers when I do that, thank you for reinforcing my shopping habits.
