Playing Rather Than Quilting

May 29, 2009

Vince took off at noon so you know how much sewing I’ve gotten done.  But . . WOW!  What a fun afternoon we’ve had!

First was a trip up to the Amish veggie market.  They were out of strawberries but we got more kohlrabi, radishes, ripe tomatoes, green tomatoes, sweet peas, new potatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, eggs, and fresh fried pies (peach and cherry).  Ellis said his wife was up at 4 a.m. making the pies.

From there we went to the general store down the road (down a very bumpy, dirt road).  Look at this field . . such rich, dark dirt.

When I’m out in the country like this, I so don’t want to come back to town.  It’s so peaceful and quit and unobtrusive out there.  I want to live with no neighbors.  I want to have no rules about what I can have and what size it has to be and how close it can be to the property line.  Some day it’s going to happen!  I don’t even care what kind of house I have . . I just want land . . lots of land and no rules!

OK . . so we went to the general store.  The Amish have lots of land and I love that they can have lots of little buildings and fences and sheds . . no city ordinances or neighborhood covenants saying what you can and can’t have!  Of course, they also don’t have air conditioning and I’d never give that up . . not if I can help it.

These guys greeted us.  I’m not sure how much I’d like having goats.  These were whiners!  I can’t take a whining kid, a whining dog or a whining goat!

I think this guy is real old.  He looked old but then he probably said the same thing about me! :(   He just wanted to be petted.  I hope the owners spend enough time with him.  He seemed lonely to me.

What do you think about their grass cutter?  And that hammock?  All the work they do and they must have time lounge in the hammock every now and then!

dsc06853

Love seeing this in the yard.

As we were leaving, these three little children pulled up in this little buggy with a little Shetland Pony pulling it.  The two children standing there belong to another lady who was shopping.  The people who own the general store . . their son lives down the road and I’m guessing these three children are the grandchildren to the people who own the general store.  There are no other houses anywhere around.

I’ll tell you more tomorrow . . it was such a fun day!

How nice for you to have such a pleasant day….looks heavenly. Question….do they get annoyed when you take photos of the kids? I know the Amish up this way are VERY vocal about stopping you if they see you with a camera…..if you want a picture, you must do it from a distance and when they aren’t looking in your direction. (You can’t really see the faces of the kids in the wagon, so maybe the parents/grandparents would be fine with this.) One time I was at the Amish market outside of Dover (Delaware) and a man was trying to take a picture of an Amish gentleman sitting up in his buggy and the Amish man became very irate and the man with the camera took the photo anyway. The rest of us were just standing there with our mouths open!!! And…another question….. How are the chickens enjoying their new home this week???

I always ask before taking pictures of even their animals. They told me I could take a picture just so it was from a distance and didn’t show the faces of the kids. The chickens are having a ball in their new run.

You just want lots of land, and you don’t care what sort of a house? Remember the chickens Judy!! You ‘just’ wanted chickens and look what happened there, lots of aggravation. No, if you’re going to want lots of land, want a nice house to go with it. Trust me on that, you do not want to live in a shack. It’s just not You.

My only requirement is indoor plumbing and air conditioning! :)

What wonderful contry. We went thru the Amish area of Western New York a few years ago…had some goat milk fudge that was surprisingly yummy. What do you do with the kohlrabi(sp?)? I’ve heard of it, but don’t know how to prepare it.

Kohlrabi is kind of a cross between turnips and cabbage (my definition). I like to slice it thin and saute it in oil or a bit of bacon grease and butter. Before it’s all the way done, add some chopped onions and seasonings.

Judy,

Your post made me happy just reading it. It sure sounds like my idea of a
perfect day. I am right there with you about neighbors.

I agree with you completely! I grew up in a small town, then moved to a somewhat rural area but in a housing development then moved to a city. Six months ago we moved to another housing development but everyone has acreage- we have been on 4 acres- we can see some neighbors houses but it’s still very quiet and we have deer, squirrels, chipmunks and all kinds of birds. It’s so nice- now I have a great job opportunity further north and we are moving again but to a city ( for now) to a street where all the houses look alike and there is no yard. I’m really not looking forward to that again but hopefully we will find our dream area again where we can be out in the trees and the quiet.

Robin, I hope the time passes quickly for you til you can be where you want to be. I’ve always said “bloom where you’re planted” and have been happy everywhere we’ve lived but still hold on to the hope of having lots of land some day.

I wish you wouldn’t post these types of posts…. you make me so homesick for Missouri! Ava (home to us) has lots of Amish around the area.

Those goats by the way are Nubians. They are the most vocal breed there is, and the most popular. If you ever stumble upon a baby Nubian, you will likely walk home with it if you can figure out a way to do so. They are cuter than any puppy, and couldn’t be more friendly! They are sought after because their milk has the highest butterfat content of all dairy goats.

I’d have goats again in a heartbeat, they’re really enjoyable to keep, and you can skip the buck and just have them bred… the girls don’t smell without a buck around.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all children, about the age of those, could spend a couple of months on an Amish farm? Think of the lessons to be learned from that experience! It looks so peaceful there. Oh, my, a slice of peach pie while laying in the hammock!
