Are we in for a rough afternoon around here! One of my blog readers from Kansas began writing me . . get in the basement, get the chickens in the basement . . NOW! It wasn’t long before the tornado sirens began going off. For those who have never heard them, here’s what they sounded like at my house about 10 minutes ago. Excuse the flip flopping sound as I’m running back to the house without turning off the camera. I had on Vince’s crocs! I tried my darndest to get those chickens to go inside the coop but they would not — too busy watching to see what I was doing. I tried dandelions, clover, honeysuckle (those are their favorite treats). Nope! Vince told me to shine a flashlight down in the wooden box but that didn’t get them in either. They’re on their own til this passes.
But another friend in Kansas has it all in perspective. Here’s what she wrote me:
If we get hit by a tornado, I am gonna be so pissed. I just scrubbed my floor!
We’ll be fine . . this is pretty standard spring/early summer weather for our area. I’ll continue to sew unless the power goes out and then I’ll have an excuse to take that nap I’ve been wanting all day!

Hahahahah! Ascared of a little lightening! Man, did you jump!
That’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
Thanks for the laugh!@
I do hope that was just a warning and no tornadoes actually came down to the ground.
I hope you are safe and sound…..one more reason why I love living in New England.
Stay safe, hope those silly chickens go in too! Those tornadoes would really freak me out! I’ll take our hurricanes any day.
I hope the ugly weather has left you and yours safe!
Weather like that is why it’s nice to keep a treadle or a hand-crank machine ready to go. (Wish I could find one of either that I could easily put back in working condition.–We’ve had clouds and wind all day, but that’s the worst we’ve seen.)
You guys keep your tornadoes and your hurricanes! I’ll take good ole Pacific Northwest rain any day of the week……….freakie! Hope all is well and calm.
Glad you’ve got a basement Judy, stay safe and don’t worry about the chickens!
Sheesh, I thought the ground moving every once in a while was scary! I’d pass out cold if I heard a tornado siren! Hope all is well with you!
our siren is three doors down from us and its horrific when it goes off. Praying the storms don’t turn circular on you
Judy, I am *so* impressed with your on-the-spot reporting. Really.
And there is nowhere in this country (that I know of) which doesn’t suffer from some sort of natural catastrophe as a fact of life: tornado, hurricane, earthquake, killing blizzard / ice / windstorm, flood.
Re. jumping from lightning: I was caught on the Interstate in 1991 near Amarillo, Texas, by an August thunderstorm so severe that I could not see the front end of my car. I pulled as far off the road as I could and turned the car–and my lights–OFF, after opening the windows a tiny crack for air. The moment I did, BOOM! there was a 360-degree burst of light and simultaneous car-rattling thunder. I am SO thankful I was in a car with four solid tires between me and the metal; I’m pretty sure the lightning hit a pole a short distance away, but of course I couldn’t see the pole due to the torrential rain.
Those tornado sirens are the same ones our county tests each month, to be used in case of a “shelter in place” situation: just like Judy’s, they’re sounded for storm winds or other natural catastrophe, or chemical release.
Judy..you’re going to have to get used to that living where you do. We had the same thing here in Pittsburg that last hour or so, except add to that our ditch overflowing and half the yard underwater. Have to admit I did go to the neighbor’s basement for awhile after the second tornado warning and just before it started hailing
Hope you and the chickens are all ok now. I do love your friends attitude about scrubbing the floor. I laughed so hard, coffee came outta my nose. I need a “head’s up” when something that funny is coming…..
Hope all is well by now & the tornadoes passed you by. That said, I love a good thunder & lightning storm.
It got so black right after I talked to you the last time, I called Joe and made him come home so we loaded up the dogs in the truck and went for a ride. First we went towards Joplin. The radio guy said stay off of 171 – that’s the road we were on! Then we cut west at Carl Junction and ended up going clear to Baxter Springs. The damn storm followed us everywhere. It finally looked lighter to the North so we got on 69 and headed back towards Pittsburg and home. It rained like a sonofagun all the way till we hit Pittsburg.
Got back to Frontenac and there was not a thing out of place.
I’d a been better off hiding under the bed.
God bless him, now we’re both covered in dog hair, hungry and cranky.
I got to come up with a better plan.
When I get this pool paid off, I’m getting a storm shelter. I’m putting a cot in it and I am sleeping down there. I wonder if they stay cool enough that I could put up preserves and store them down there like a root cellar. Do they make one big enough to put a long arm in, do you think?
I hate this.
I talked to my mom earlier today (they’re in Dade County) and she said they were just issuing tornado warnings for Barton and Vernon counties. If my memory serves me right, you’re in Vernon Co., right? Hope all is well. Ah, life in “Tornado Alley”!
I do hope you are safe, Judy.
By the way, that young man of yours just gets more handsome with each photo!
Judy? was that what i thought I saw, is the coop actually finished and placed out in the chicken yard all done? how did I miss THAT post?
Judy! You are so funny! Video recording the sirens, photo shoot, getting the chickens in the coop. It’s the real life of Nevada, MO – LOL! We’re in Cass County, and it was absolutely torrential! Filled our two 275 gallon rain barrels in one hour, and I was trying to drive home through the mess. When I got home, what did I find? Hubby standing outside in his rain slickers, taking photos. Life in the Midwest!
Oh, I can’t view videos at work! I’ll have to check this one out this evening. Glad you’re all safe!
