50/50 Chance

June 16, 2009

When you think of having a 50/50 chance of being right . . I’m always wrong!  Always!!  If I say turn right, everyone who knows me knows to turn left.  I don’t know how I have such a knack for being wrong when I’m guessing.  It’s kinda nice because if I think I should turn right, I just turn left and then I’m right!  Never ask me for directions!

But what about quilting?  I should know a little bit about what I’m doing.  So, I’ve been frantically finishing binding and adding sleeves and labels to 16 quilts that are currently being shipped off to AQS.  Done!  Finished!  Packing them in the boxes and I noticed . . a quilt with Baptist Fans . . something’s not right.

BF

This is not THE quilt but click on it . . make it bigger . . see that the fans are directional!  On the quilt I was packing to send, I had sewn the sleeve on so that the fans were upside down.  50/50 chance I’d sew it on wrong if I wasn’t paying attention.  Most of the quilts have pantos and most of them are not directional so I wasn’t even thinking about it.  50/50 chance . . and I was 100% wrong!

Not only that but this was one of the first ones I’d done and I had sewn the sleeve in with the binding.  I had choices:

  1. I could pretend I didn’t notice everything was upside down;
  2. I could contact AQS and ask if they could just rotate the picture . . easy enough!  Those people can do so much with pictures and graphics.
  3. I could rip out the stitching where I’d sewn one whole side of the binding down; rip out the binding from the top; rip out the stitching at the bottom of the sleeve and rip off the label because it’s where the sleeve needs to be.

I thought about it for two days.  Day 1, I thought option #1 was perfect.  Then I thought maybe option #2 wasn’t so bad but in the end I decided I could only live with myself if I did option #3.  What a pain but . . it’s 1:30 a.m.  It’s done.  I couldn’t have slept anyway because of this crazy, wild weather we’re having.

The big decision now is . . do I sleep in the basement or do I go upstairs and sleep where I’m supposed to sleep?  It’s quiet now but radar doesn’t look very promising for it to stay quiet til the alarm goes off in . . four hours.   Four hours . . I cannot function on four hours sleep but that’s about what I’ve averaged for the last seven nights.

I hear thunder . . I’m sleeping in the basement!

UGH….sorry you had such a rough time between the storms and the upside-down issue with that quilt…..and I hope things improve with your weather so you can get some extra rest soon.

Upside down, right side out, right turn/left turn—–I think most of us are that way at some point in our lives. We have so much going on inside our heads that some things we just don’t have room to think about until it’s too late. You with your sleeve, me with my sashing cut too short, I’m sure there are other things, I just can’t think of them right now. ;-)
Hope you got a couple hours of good sleep.

I hear you. I took a true/false test one time for which I had not studied, 100 questions; I scored a 30. Go figure!

Sorry you had to frog (rip-it) your hanging sleeve. Maybe today is a day to get in a good NAP!

Judy, you forgot option #4… make a new fashion statement! Upside down fans are the way to go now. ;)

I’d go with option 5: when the book comes out and someone says anything blame it on editing, they put the picture in upside down.

Okay, I’ll go for option 6: put another sleeve on the opposite end with the blind hem stitch. Sew one of the ends of the first sleeve shut so that the quilt can’t be hung from it.
P.S. When I give directions, I always have to correct myself with left and right. Must be a creative flaw!
