Here’s the Next Quilt for an Hour

I would have posted it sooner but I couldn’t find my camera.  I had taken pictures last night.  Decided to give up and take another picture  using a different camera and couldn’t find another memory stick.  The only one that isn’t lost was in the lost camera so I guess technically, it was lost too.  Finally found the camera and Vince and I have been sitting here for an hour trying to think of a name for the quilt.  Any suggestions?  You don’t want to hear what we came up with.  I stand by my original opinion that whoever came up with the idea to name quilts should be . . should have moths in their stash!  Not really . . I hate moths!  I had pantry moths once.  They were horrible and I was so afraid they’d turn into cotton fabric eating moths but they didn’t.  They’re gone now if you’re wondering . . though I doubt you care about my infestation of bugs!  But, can you please think of a name for this quilt?  Then will you please think of a name for every future quilt I make?  Thanks!

And then .. I thought I had posted this entry several hours ago and just realized I’d only saved it as a draft.  Maybe I should give up before I even start!  Nope, I’m not a quitter!

Anyway . . here’s the quilt:

DSC08152

If you follow the instructions, the quilt will measure 63″ x 81″.  It can easily be made larger.  If you stick with the same size blocks and sashing, and use the same size borders I have suggested, the pieced border will fit — with additional blocks needed though.

In this quilt, I used white as the light background, yellow as the dark background and purple as the border fabric.

I’m making a second one and these are the fabrics I’m using:

DSC08115

The lightest cream, on the right side, is my light background, the tan in between the light cream and red is my darker background and the red is my border fabric.

Here’s the amount of fabric you will need:

Light Background – 2 yards
Darker Background – 1-3/4 yards
Border Fabric – 1-1/4 yards
Binding Fabric – 5/8 yard
Variety of colored fabrics – fat quarters will work

In the first quilt, I used brights.  In the second quilt, I’m using more muted darker colors.

Instructions will begin on Monday.  There are 12 or 13 hours.  There were 12 but then I realized I’d left out Hour #3 so I fixed that and now I don’t remember how many hours I ended up with.  Guess it could mean there are only 11 hours.  It’s all on my other computer.  We’ll be done in either 11, 12 or 13 hours!

Who’s going to participate with me?

How about “Squares Ville”? “Infinity Squared”? “Square Bull’s Eye”?

  2. I’ll try to join in, but don’t be surprised if I get behind! :o I have a lot going on now, but I love the squares~ how about ‘Scrappy Squares’ or since it kind of reminds me of film or photo frames~ ‘Picture It’. ;) Ok, so I’m not very good at names either~ LOL :) Thanks Judy for designing such cuties to keep us busy!~ I really need another Quiltathon! :) )

  3. Sandra (Sandy Gail) says:

Here’s another name for the quilt: “Louisiana Square Dance” Great quilt, Judy. Thank you for being so creative and generous!

  4. Cindy says:

What about “Freeze Frame”? The outside border sort of resembles those little film strips that we watched in school….the ones that had no sound and someone had to manually advance the film strip. Then because the bigger squares are surrounded by the little squares, it looks like the “video” is frozen.

I also know there’s a song titled “Freeze Frame” and if you think about it the center blocks sort of look frozen against all of the smaller blocks.

Ok, I’m feeling really old now so I’ll go back to doing homework.

  5. Nancy says:

Looks like frames to me. Frame Game? Square Frames? Picture Frames?

  6. karen dixon says:

    Judy:
This is a gorgeous quilt, but it loks like “Mutant Lifesavers” to me.

    Happy stitching
    Karen

  7. Terri says:

Cute Judy! ok I’m going to try and do this and see if I can keep up. Work is pretty busy right now plus I’ve got the added obsession of trying to decide on a long arm :) and I need tops to quilt when I get it!

The first thing I thought of was Freeze Frame also, but now I’ve got the J.Giles Band song “freeze frame” stuck in my head!!

    Thanks for doing this again!

ps dang I just remembered I haven’t finished the last (and first) QIAD I did lol.

  8. Sue H says:

I like Frame Game and Square Dance listed above. Actually, I like Square Dance a lot! It’s better than anything coming to my mind.

  9. Elaine says:

how about “no time to be square”

  10. Pat says:

I’m going to attempt to do this and keep up. I am BAD at naming quilts, though, and none of mine have names (aren’t you just horrified to know that??)….so sorry I can’t help out with a name but the others have some good ideas on that, I see.

  11. Trish says:

    Squaresville is my suggestion!

  12. Mary C says:

How about “Be there or be Square” ?? That came to my mind after reading the other comments. I’m so bad making up names for my quilts too. My latest project has a subliminal name. It could be interpreted two ways. I’ll blog about it maybe on Monday since it is a challenge quilt at our show and I won’t have it back until Sunday. The theme is 10 years / 10 colors.

  13. Kathy says:

I was thinking of “Square Cheerios,” or “Squares in a Circle,” or “Circles Squared,” but I really like, “Freeze Frame!”

  14. Liz says:

    “Boxed In”???

    Looks good….

  15. Maria Stahl says:

    Squaresville is a great name.

I love the bright colors. They MAKE that quilt.

  16. Kay Sorensen says:

I have a foolproof system for naming quilts.
    Quilt 321, 322, etc.
    Works for me!

  17. Jeanne says:

Aaaaah, Judy — just today I had decided that I wouldn’t be able to do an October quilt, and now here you are with one I CAN finish in time. Heading off to paw through my Halloween fabrics :)

    Jeanne
    P.S. I like Square Dance

  18. Joyce says:

Great names suggested. Not sure if this is a “great” name suggestion, what about “It’s Hip To Be Square!” I’m hoping to keep up with this one. Thanks for all you do and give!

  19. Marta says:

Hola amiga, lo llamaria cuadrados en fuga, si lo miras un ratito parecen escaparse metiendose unos en otros.
Hare el trabajo con sus instrucciones. Gracias por compartir.

I love it Judy! How about “Pandora’s Boxes”

  23. Pam in KC says:

Great looking quilt, and I’d love to participate, but I’m doing my best to stick to my UFOs.

  24. Debbie in WA says:

I like lots of the name ideas but this quilt is my “Boxed Delight”
A name is a hard choice with so many good suggestions ~ I’ll be happy with any name you choose and look forward to the next adventure.
Blessings for your good work Judy! Keep ‘um coming.
    Thanks

  25. Judy,
I love your quilt and I would make it if I had more time but just don’t have it right now unfortunately.
I would called ” All Squared Up”
    Very fun pattern.
    Warmest regards,
    Anna

  26. thats beautiful Judy

  27. Sue says:

How about “All Squared Up” and yes I want to join in

  28. Sue says:

Email address is wrong in first email

  29. Karen L says:

I”m like the others and usually don’t name my quilts…….the person recieving the quilt usually doesn’t care about the name anyway. So when I seen this and read the story I thought…………”All Boxed Up”………It looks like a great project, but to only find the time.

    Karen

  30. Just my kind of quilt! I have to make this one, too! :-)

  31. Lesley says:

It’s a lovely quilt Judy, when I first looked at it I thought Lollies, so my offering is Mixed Lollies.

  32. Vicky says:

I thought of Jack in the Box but I really like Freeze Frame, too.

  33. Karin says:

Himmel und Hoelle (meaning Heaven and Hell) as this reminds me of the game of that name we used to play when I was small. You had chalk squares on the ground and had to hop through them in a certain order.

  34. Just love the look of this quilt, and even though I started a 6 week intensive geneology on line course today I intend to find an hour a day to sew. Boxing Clever ?

  35. Penny says:

I love the quilt but I am not sure if I will have the time to do it. My favourite suggestion for a name is Louisiana Square Dance.

  36. Anita says:

The quilt looks to me like ‘restaurant dishes’ . The kind you might see in a fancy asian place. Kind of looks like a set table.

  37. dawn says:

I like Louisiana square dance myself. I am also not good at naming names but know a good one when I see it. LOL
    beautiful quilt

  38. Carol says:

Love it! Love the name suggestions. How about “Hopscotch”?

  39. Lydia says:

I rarely name my quilts — only when something really jumps out at me. Or I’ll just call it by the pattern name, or the block name or what group I made it with (The Stash Sisters block swap quilt, for example). So I have no particular ideas on a name, bright or otherwise. Though I like several of the suggestions already given.

I’m going to try to play along, but I’ll be gone for a week-long retreat the second week, so I may have to catch up when I get home, as I don’t think I’ll have Internet access while I’m gone. But maybe I will… We’ll see.

I like the one you’ve already made, but I really like those deep, rich colors of the new one you’re making! Nice project to be working on as we begin to head into autumn ;-)

Thanks, Judy, for sharing this design with us. You rock!

  40. Bonnie T says:

I’m in! How ’bout “Hip to be Square!”

  41. Carla says:

The first thing I thought of when I look at your quilt was “Box’s around Town”
This looks like a fun quilt to do, you can count me in.

  42. Marilyn says:

Reminds me of Chicklets gum, or the new Dentyne gum that comes in the little green round box and the commercial where the guy goes up to strangers and offers them them gum and if they hold out their hand he says “Friend request accepted”

So, I’d name it Friend Request, or Chicklets.

  43. Cynthia says:

I love the quilt. Even the many borders don’t scare me. I am going try to make it. No, I will make one!

How about My Little Town for a name. It looks like a plot map to me.
    Or – Houses and Farms.

    Cynthia

  44. Becky says:

I love your quilt, but I do not have a name for it. Looks great! We had those grain moths too and they were so hard to get rid of. I finally found the strongest scented candle I could find and put it in the cupboard uncovered and UNLIT and the moths were gone in a couple of days. It has been years and no more moths. The candle is still in there, so every once and a while I scratch the surface a little so there is a scent. works like a charm.

  45. Mary says:

How about “Hopscotch”? I think I’ll join in on this one. Thanks for doing it.

  46. Norma says:

I love it! It is perfect for a triangle-phobic person like me! Count me in, although I will have to do all the hours on the weekend not the day to day hours like most of the others. I love the name, “No Time to Be Square”! I brings in the hourly time frame we are working in and the obvious square design.

  47. KC says:

The name that popped into mind “Geometry Squared”. My mind never makes sense.

  48. Karla says:

I like the hip to be square and count me in I will do my best to stay up with you.

  49. Nancy says:

Didn’t you say there would be 8 borders? I think you should name it “Eight Squared”…

I wish I could say I could do this. I just know that I have too much on my plate at this point. I do really like it though. I love the squares….

  50. Patricia says:

I can’t help you with a name:-( but I do LOVE it and it is perfect for my handdyes—-I will be participating! Thanks so much for sharing your gift with us!

    xoxo Hugs!
