Here’s the Next Quilt for an Hour
September 16th, 2009
I would have posted it sooner but I couldn’t find my camera. I had taken pictures last night. Decided to give up and take another picture using a different camera and couldn’t find another memory stick. The only one that isn’t lost was in the lost camera so I guess technically, it was lost too. Finally found the camera and Vince and I have been sitting here for an hour trying to think of a name for the quilt. Any suggestions? You don’t want to hear what we came up with. I stand by my original opinion that whoever came up with the idea to name quilts should be . . should have moths in their stash! Not really . . I hate moths! I had pantry moths once. They were horrible and I was so afraid they’d turn into cotton fabric eating moths but they didn’t. They’re gone now if you’re wondering . . though I doubt you care about my infestation of bugs! But, can you please think of a name for this quilt? Then will you please think of a name for every future quilt I make? Thanks!
And then .. I thought I had posted this entry several hours ago and just realized I’d only saved it as a draft. Maybe I should give up before I even start! Nope, I’m not a quitter!
Anyway . . here’s the quilt:
If you follow the instructions, the quilt will measure 63″ x 81″. It can easily be made larger. If you stick with the same size blocks and sashing, and use the same size borders I have suggested, the pieced border will fit — with additional blocks needed though.
In this quilt, I used white as the light background, yellow as the dark background and purple as the border fabric.
I’m making a second one and these are the fabrics I’m using:
The lightest cream, on the right side, is my light background, the tan in between the light cream and red is my darker background and the red is my border fabric.
Here’s the amount of fabric you will need:
Light Background – 2 yards
Darker Background – 1-3/4 yards
Border Fabric – 1-1/4 yards
Binding Fabric – 5/8 yard
Variety of colored fabrics – fat quarters will work
In the first quilt, I used brights. In the second quilt, I’m using more muted darker colors.
Instructions will begin on Monday. There are 12 or 13 hours. There were 12 but then I realized I’d left out Hour #3 so I fixed that and now I don’t remember how many hours I ended up with. Guess it could mean there are only 11 hours. It’s all on my other computer. We’ll be done in either 11, 12 or 13 hours!
Who’s going to participate with me?

I was going to suggest “Square Pegs” but I like some of the other suggestions better. Looks like if you stick with squares, you’ll have titles for at least the next dozen quilts.
Oh my gosh, I love this one!
Gee, the first 3 names I thought of were already mentioned (Hip to be Square, Boxed In, and Hopscotch). . . ok, how about: “1 square, 2 square, Red square, Blue square” (I’m channelling Dr. Seuss I guess!!) hehe hehe
Looks like Bunch of Chunks to me. I like it a lot. I’m surrounded by the young female generation and this it the type of design that really gets them interested. Show them a hand pieced Storm at Sea and they barely give it a second glance.
You have to hear this in my singing voice…”Love it!!!” well maybe you should hear it in my daughters singing voice I don’t sing that well.
I think this will be great! Thanks for all your work!
Louisiana Square Dance was the name suggested that I liked.
Since my fabric is all packed up except what is kitted for projects I placed my order with Thousands of Bolts today.
I might not get my fabric until Monday or Tuesday. I think I can catch up in a few days if I get a late start.
Thank you for this project. I am finishing one this week and I will have time to get the studio cleaned up to start on your next design.
Love it, love it, love it. I can’t wait to go home from work, and start pulling out fabrics to use.
Sally in St. Paul
It reminds me of the Windows (computer) screen saver from some years ago – remember they moved across the screen.?
I like bunch of Chunks.
I am going to give it another run!
I don’t know why but my 16 yr old son thinks it looks like a party dress. I wonder what he does at parties? And I like the name “Bunch of Chunks” but “Louisiana Square Dance” has a better ring to it.
Around the Square. This quilt is bright and cheery. I think its a go for me.
I love the idea of LA Square Dance… but for me when I look at it, it reminds me of flying over a large city and seeing all the buildings… some big ones surrounded by lots of little ones…
call me odd. LOL but your quilt is very nice Judy. Love the orange
and those 8 borders are perfect. Question do you sew them on 1 at a time or all together then add to the quilt..?
Love from Texas! ~bonnie
forgot to say – maybe this would be a good time to teach us mitered corners? sew them all together and then miter??
No name, but I’m gonna try to hang in there on this one and sew along with everyone! Thanks!
Square Jellybeans
Me, me! I want to join in the fun.
In honor of the chickens I think it should be called Nesting Boxes.
I like the names “chicklets” or “small town square” because both of these names remind me of all the fun posts I’ve read on your blog about you enjoying your town and your chickens!
I hope to be able to play along…looking forward to it, but haven’t got a clue about my fabric yet.
How about Square Deal?
How about “Rock around the Block” or a takeoff of LA Square Dance and Nesting Boxes, “Chicken in a Square”?
Bunch of Chunks reminds me too much of Blowing Chunks.
(Sorry.)
How about Hopscotch or something like that.
Hopscotch Parfait?
Just love the colors of the finished quilt and can’t wait to get started.
Thanks Judy!!!
I swore I wouldn’t start another quilt …. but to whittle down my stash and only take up an hour a week….I can’t resist. Count me in … and I like the name square pegs….where’s my hammer?
Oops! Hour a day…I swear I’m not lazy!
I said no. Then I saw it and you know I have to do it. I need a quilt for a Christmas gift for son’s gf and this would be perfect. I was wondering how I was going to get that done anyway and now I know. I vote for the LA Square Dance.
I am going to call my “All Boxed Up” as I am going to make it for my UPS driver. I am going to use browns and tans. Thanks Judy for designing the perfect quilt for me.
How about Dominos? I know they are squares and not circles, but the pattern reminded me of Dominos.
I’m just curious what the dimensions are for the center part (with the yellow background). I’m expecting and think it would make a great baby quilt.
BINGO BANGO
I would like to participate. Not sure I will be able to keep up but I certainly will try.
I thought of this one but noticed it mentioned already – City Blocks,
Others – City Side or Squared Up.
Somehow I am sitting on the fence for QFAH though I like the idea – and the design! Just arrived on your blog via Sue’s blog and are contemplating. I guess that makes my participation a definite “maybe”. Will decide by Monday.
Thanks for putting it up!
Love the colors in this one!
Judy, I am lagging behind, as usual.
When I fist looked at your quilt What came to my mind was
” The Big and Small of it All”.
Beautiful as always
Polka Dot Squares. That is what it said to me the instant I saw it. Thanks for the instructions. My first time here. Got the link from Patilou’s quilts.
I will be back.
