Which Border?

Don’t I wish I could make quilts as quickly as I can come up with these drawings?  In the drawings shown below, the main part of the quilt is the same, only the borders are changed.  Even the borders are basically the same, just the pieces are colored differently.  Not saying any of these will be the final border design but of these three, which one do you like best and why?

No. 1

No. 2

No. 3

Sometime tomorrow I’ll tell you my choice.  I already know which one I like best but just want to see what you all have to say.  Thanks!

  1. 1
    Krista says:

I really liked #1, until I saw #3. 2 is too dark for my taste. I like the way the white blocks in the border of #3 echo the blocks in the main part of the quilt.

  2. 2
    Ida says:

    I’m torn. 2 or 3.

Two is peaceful. It gives your eye a place to rest… kind of reminds me of a houndstooth pattern.

Three mimics the small white blocks in the center.

Probably number 2 … it doesn’t pull my eye from the center as much.

  3. 3
    Lee Ann says:

I vote for #3. I like the mini light blocks that echo the larger light blocks in the center.

  4. 4
    Diana W. says:

1 or 3 for me. I think it is the white that pops out at you….I really like that border design. I’ve never seen anything like it before! That is stunning!

  5. 5
    Katherine Toler says:

Border #2, that is if you want the body of the quilt to be primary.

  6. 6
    Nancy says:

#2…. green quilt….kind of celtic design border… darker color sets off the inside of the quilt…

  7. 7
    Carrie says:

2 is my first choice, 3 is my second choice.

  8. 8
    Alberta in N GA says:

I like 3…it will be interesting to see which one you pick..

  9. 9
    Vicki W says:

    #3

  10. 10
    Rosaline says:

It’s hard to believe this is the same border – amazing what color placement can do. I pick #2.

  11. 11
    Pat Bandura says:

I like #3 best. The border makes a great frame for that center

  12. 12
    Toni says:

If I had to chose it would be #2. It just looks more restful. Of course, that depends on the color choices in the border.

  13. 13
    Linda H says:

Of the 3 borders, I think #1 is prettiest; however, I believe #2 relates better to the center of the quilt. #1 seems a bit glare-y compared to the rest of the quilt. I’m not completely happy with #2… perhaps the colors could be adjusted somehow without bringing back the glare of #1. I hope that makes sense.

  14. 15
    Kelly Ann says:

    number 2 has my vote…

  15. 16
    pdudgeon says:

i’m going with border #2 because it adds to the quilt instead of compeating with it. Also having the chain one color and the background another complimentary color unifies the border, and makes it look stronger.

ps. the white squares in number 3 remind me of roasted marshmallows on a stick! LOL

  16. 17
    Vicky says:

2, 3, 1 in that order. 2 is peaceful, 3 pops the white nicely, but I think 1 overwhelms the center. Of course, what do I know! :)

  17. 18
    Kathy in BC says:

I like #3. Love the little boxes.

  18. 19
    Pat says:

2 is my first choice and next I’d pick 3. I like how the border in 1 doesn’t compete with the light blocks that are in the center of the quilt. #3′s border only competes a little bit but I think the #1 border competes a LOT with the center of the quilt….and I find that distracting.

  19. 20
    MichelleB says:

No. 3. That is just one of the coolest borders I’ve ever seen.

  20. 21
    Jan O (St Louis) says:

I like #3 the best. The proportion of white to the other colors is consistent with the center of the quilt, and there’s enough black to frame & complement the center nicely. #1 has too much white, #2 too much black.

  21. 22
    Julie says:

I like #2. It seems to make the certain portion of the quilt the focus, rather than the border.

  22. 23

My vote is #2. I like the border for #3 also, but not for this quilt.

  23. 24
    Vicki H. says:

#2 because the focus is still on the center for me

  24. 25
    Melissa C says:

    I vote for #2 then #3

  25. 26
    Deb says:

#3, as I love contrast, like the way the light comes back out in the border, but I love the light/dark corners in #1.

  26. 27
    swooze says:

They all look daunting to me. I think I like 3 the best because it seems simple enough with just a little complexity for my eye appeal. #2 is 2nd.

  27. 28
    Lizzy Hentze says:

I’m in for #2, closely followed by #3!

  28. 29
    Kelly says:

I like the way the darker border frames the main part of the quilt in #2…my choice.

  29. 30
    Glenda in Florida says:

#3 The repetition of the little light colored squares from the center makes it my choice

  30. 31
    Beth says:

I vote for #2. I love stars..and with the green in the background instead of cream (or is that white..my eyes are tired!), your eyes see the blue stars. In the others, my eye goes to the solid light blocks instead of the stars…

  31. 32

I vote for number 2. I like how it’s quieter and creates a softer negative space around the interior of the quilt.

  32. 33
    Diane says:

Before I read any of the other comments I want to say I like #3 the best. #1 felt too white and #2 felt too heavy and #3 seems more of the same, but complimenting…I hope I made sense. There are days I can’t put into words what I think…most days. :)

  33. 34
    Mary C says:

I like #2 because the border looks like a chain link and doesn’t distract from the center of the quilt. #3 is my second choice. Guess we’ll see the borders on the Design Wall tomorrow…

  34. 35
    Carla S says:

2 would be my first choice and 1 and 3 would be a close runners up.
Boy you don’t make it easy to decided I like them all

  35. 36
    eve in ga says:

I like #2 best. The others are too busy and distracting for me.

  36. 37
    Jennifer says:

I like #1 the best because of how it balances out the other white in the quilt. Good luck making your choice!

  37. 38
    Donna in KS says:

#2 anchors the quilt for me. #3 seems to float right off the page (screen)! I like it, but not on this quilt. In order: 2,1,3

  38. 39
    Shannon says:

#2 is less distracting for me. My eyes naturally move to the center and then out to the border–does that make sense?

  39. 40
    Anita says:

#1 sets the tone for the whole quilt, love the Celtic look of the border. #2 comes close but tends to blend in with the center.

  40. 41
    Deb from OK says:

For THIS quilt 2 is my first choice, 3 is my second choice

But could you provide us with directions for ALL. I have a fairy quilt that would look good With #1

  41. 42
    Laura says:

#2, it really draws the entire top together.

  42. 43
    Maxi says:

Well, I’m definitely in the minority group here, but I like No. 1 best.

  43. 44
    Jill says:

I guess I am in the minority too because I like #1.

  44. 45
    Gale says:

Definitely #2 because it anchors the quilt, leaves the attention on the center and doesn’t compete with it.

  45. 46

I like #2. The darker green squares frame the quilt nicely. (I think!)

  46. 47
    Lynne in Hawaii says:

I like the tone on tone look of 2. It gives texture without screaming for attention and taking away from the center of the quilt. I think it compliments the quilt wonderfully. #3 is second choice.

  47. 48
    Kathy Chiocca says:

    #3

  48. 49
    Bessie H. says:

I like number 2. It just looks more like a frame arround a picture.

  49. 50
    Darlene B says:

I think #2 enhances the quilt, but doesn’t draw your eyes away from the center pattern. #2 gets my vote!

  50. 51
    Susan says:

I like #1 for several reasons. I like the border design, I like the white, and the dark green corners in the border add that last bit of punch to the quilt. The white border blocks in #1 also seem to be more proportionate to the white blocks in the center of the quilt which I think gives it a more balanced look. The white in the border blocks for quilt #3 are nice, but I think they’re too small. When I look at that quilt the white squares in the center pop more than the border does.

  51. 52
    Greg says:

I like #1 the best. It reminds me of a trellis surrounding a garden of flowers. The white brings a fresh, clean pop to the quilt.

  52. 53
    peggy says:

    2

  53. 54
    peggy says:

    I choose #2.

  54. 55
    Darlene S says:

Just got home from our big quilt show. I like #1 without the black color in the 4 corners. It does remind me of a trellis fence & looks more spring like. I like #2 because it reminded me of intertwining rope and a bit more masculine. Either is nice.

  55. 56
    bingo~bonnie says:

number 3 b/c it echos the white blocks that are a part of the quilt’s center! ;)

They are all cool – but #3 just “matches” better ;)

    Love from Texas! ~bonnie

  56. 57

    #2

  57. 58
    Rhonda says:

#2 — like the more graphic look

  58. 59

so, Judy, what won and which was your pick?

  59. 60
    Pat from Spokane says:

I like #2. It “holds in the quilt” best and the other two borders are distracting.

  60. 61
    Lavina Hould says:

I like #2 best, because it adds to the quilt, but doesn’t distract from the blocks.

  61. 62
    Sherry says:

    I like #2.

  62. 63
    Wendy says:

    I like #2

  63. 64
    Donna says:

    Number 1

  64. 66
    Pam in KC says:

#2 – the all dark green pieced border balances out the lighter green inner and outer border.

  65. 67

#2 gets my vote. I like the darker frame…really sets off the center blocks.

  66. 68
    Cindy Burgdorf says:

#2 is my choice. I think that it is a better frame for the center blocks.

  67. 69
    floribunda says:

I like either 2 or 3 — #1 has too much white, somehow; #2 might be too dark, but it’s the most border-ish of them.

  68. 70
    Pam says:

Judy, again great designs. IMHO #1 lightens the quilt, #2 darkens the quilts, #3 matches the quilt for intensity. That being said, I like #3 the best. It is the most innovative and adds an additional design element to the quilt that the other two don’t. Since you have a final border around in the lighter green I don’t find it too distracting and the lighter green does give you eye a resting place. Course I’m kinda of the mind set that more is better.

    Pam

  69. 72
    Lydia says:

I prefer #1, because it’s the lightest. I’m not sure why, but that’s the one that I react best to when I look at them, and I think it’s because of the lightness of it. Which is odd, since I’m a Thimbleberries and homespun girl, a lot of the time. But there it is! Nice design!

  70. 73
    Angie says:

I only like number 3. For me it takes the centre out into the borders better… like it belongs, the other two look like … busy borders. I hope that makes sense to you.

  71. 74
    Susan says:

#2, the darker one, more dramatic, and it seems to focus the quilt.

  72. 75
    Karin says:

I like the third one best, the light amount seems to relate best to the amount of light in the center.

  73. 76
    meredith says:

no 2 because it looks like a cable and the med and dark make a definite frame around the centre.

  74. 77
    Brenda says:

For me No 2. I think the darker border frames the top nicely

  75. 78
    Gina E says:

    #2

  76. 79
    Amy says:

    2 – I like the darker frame

  77. 80
    CJ says:

Number 3. The first one almost “clashes” with the quilt. It’s very distracting. #2 pulls my eye in the most as it provides a nice frame for the interior, but it’s a bit overwhelming, it distracts from the center.

#3 is a perfect balance. It both frames the center nicely and draws some white from it as well.

  78. 81
    Nancy says:

Love #2!! And I love all the colors in this quilt…reminds me of your lime green kitchen!

  79. 82
    Verna says:

Hi. #1 – too white; #2 – too black; #3 – just right! (reminds me of the three bears :)

    Verna
    happy quilting

  80. 83
    June Piper-Brandon says:

I definitely like #2 best, #1 draws attention away from the quilt while #2 provides a nice ending to it without taking attention away. #3 just doesn’t do anything for it, makes you wonder what’s next.

  81. 84
    Ivani says:

    # 3 is my choice. The white squares matches with the squares in the center top, and finished the quilt very well.

  82. 85
    Sheryl says:

#2—It’s complimentary to the main part of the quilt. The other 2 pull too much attention away. Just my 2 cents. :-)

  83. 86
    Annie says:

#1 pleases my eye the most.

  84. 87
    Yvonne says:

I like the third one. :)

  85. 88
    Becky says:

I like #2 it makes the main quilt part show up the best.

  86. 89
    Karen says:

#1 is a little too busy for me – detracts from the main part of the quilt. I’m torn between 2 & 3 although I think I’m leaning more towards #2 – it seems more striking altho #3 unifies the quilt – either one will be beautiful.

  87. 90
    judy says:

    I like#2
The first one I only see the border and #3 I only see the squares. Number two makes the stars shine. Love your quilts!!
    Judy

  88. 91
    Nancy says:

    #2–Love it!

  89. 92
    peg says:

    #2

  90. 93
    Becky R says:

#1 because it was white in the border design that ties with the white in the center of the quilt. And I like this border better than the others.

  91. 94
    laceflower says:

I like all the borders but #3 suits this quilt best as it echos the interior square. Love, love, love EQ

  92. 95
    Judy C in NC says:

Number 2 gets my vote – it just works !!!

  93. 96
    Sherry says:

I like #2 the best. It seems to frame and allow the quilt to “end” easier than the lights that are in the other two borders.

  94. 97
    Jane says:

I like #2…it seems to frame the quilt better….

  95. 98
    Elaine says:

I like #2, the others seem like there’s too much competition going on between the inside of the quilt and the borders.

  96. 99
    valerie says:

    #2

The white in #1 and #3 makes it look to busy and #3 is particularly distracting.

  97. 100
    Melinda says:

    Hey Judy,

I like #1 the best. I’m not sure why, but it reached out and really caught my attention. :)

    Hugs,
    Melinda

  98. 101
    Iwona says:

    Number 3

  99. 102

Judy, yet more quilts with inspirational borders! You really are inspiring me to do something a little more exciting with the borders of my own quilts (which are usually dull because borders – or more precisely, getting pieced borders to fit…- scare me witless). Guess I would do well to bite the bullet and follow you doen the EQ road!!
I’m looking forward to seeing these made up. Couldn’t tell you which was my favourite. They all look great!
    Have a good weeK!

  100. 103
    Bobbie says:

I’m all for #2–Looks to me like that is the winner? Hugs, Bobbie

  101. 104
    Caryl W says:

    definitely #2 :)

  102. 105
    Elaine Adair says:

#2 – blends in with strength – the others appear to busy.

  103. 106
    Maya says:

I like #3 best – the tiny white squares carry the larger squares in the body out to the border. :)

  104. 107

    I like #2

  105. 108
    susan rizzi says:

I like the border #2 the best because the dark green seems to frame the quilt the best.

Years ago I took a stained glass glass and the teacher/artist always told us to try to use a dark color on the outside of the piece to “frame it” and her advice always seems to work for me.

    Susan R

  106. 109
    Diane says:

I would choose number 2. It just adds a nicer finish to the quilt.

    Diane in Mid Missouri

  107. 110
    Ray says:

I like #2 best – also because the dark color seems to frame the quilt the best.

  108. 111
    Nancy says:

Definitely #2…. I think the white pieces in the other two are just too white…. if that makes sense.

    hugs!

  109. 112
    Demi says:

    #3

For some reason it sets off the center better.

  110. 113
    Kelli says:

I like the third option mostly because I feel the other 2 provide more contrast than is complimentary. ~ksp

  111. 114
    qltnbe says:

I agree, #2 is the best!

  112. 115
    ruth anne says:

The middle (darker one) because I see the whole quilt better.

  113. 116
    ruth anne says:

The middle (darker one) because I see the whole quilt better. It is amazing to see the difference in the coloring of the border.

  114. 117
    suewilliams says:

I would go with #3. Also thanks for thinking of us and the orphanage. We had a nice show and tell. sue

  115. 118
    Mel Meister says:

The quilt is very busy (but beautiful!) The darker Border #2 helps to tame it down.
