Knitting Success

November 10, 2010

I do believe I’ve mastered knitting two socks at once.  The last time I re-cast these, I got it right without struggling.  I asked Mary a while back if I’ll ever get to the point where I can cast on two at once without having to read the book.  I’m not there yet but I’m close.  It helps that it took me 10 times on both of the pairs of socks I did.

Do I like it better than knitting on DPN’s?  No, not yet.  For me, it may be that I just haven’t done it enough.  I will cast on another pair because if I can enjoy this method, it will be so nice to have two completed socks at the same time.  When I first started knitting with DPNs, I probably didn’t like that method a whole lot either.  When knitting with DPN’s, I can watch TV or talk to Vince or knit in the car without even thinking about what I’m doing.  With the two at once, I’m still having to pay attention to which way I turn the socks, and sometimes I have to feed the yarn between the cables.  Once on this pair, when talking on the phone while knitting, I ended up with three parts on one cable and only one on the other and had to use DPN’s to get it straightened out.  On the first pair (which I still haven’t completed), I got so confused that I took them off and did the heels on DPN’s but then put them back on circulars.  Maybe I’ll finish those today.   Monday I finished the two socks. . the 2nd pair I started.  Why did I finish the second pair before the first pair?  I don’t know!

The ones on DPN’s, I’ve turned the heel on one sock.

The mohair is kinda scratchy and I don’t see these ever being my favorite socks but they’re a great color.  I remember now that in high school I had a mohair sweater and it was kinda scratchy too.

Ooo, I love the colors in those finished socks. WTG on your finish! I knit on mine for an hour last night and you can’t even tell…

Yeah Judy!!

I finished one sock yesterday, with a shorty cuff. I’m very proud to announce I did a kitchner toe ALL BY MYSELF! (I usually have to have my dh read step 1-4 over and over AND OVER until it’s all done, lol.)

I’m anxious to cast-on it’s mate because I have a ball of Loopy Ewe blend waiting in the wings!

Pretty socks! Right now I’m trying to master toe-up socks on dpns and rather enjoying that. The toe looks better I think than my kitchenering. Some day I’ll try the two at a time on cables.

I’ve got all the ‘stuff’ to do the 2-socks at once up or down. I was using the short circular (a dream) until I get to the heel, then dpns, then back to the circular. Problem? 2 different socks (tension). Maybe the new method will help. I’ll see if I can manage the cast on this morning.

Your socks look great. I am going to cast on, again, for the 3rd time, and this time I’m going to try and move the last stitch on one needle, to the other, and somehow pull the other stitch over that stitch onto the other needle, to avoid having to make a knot, and maybe I won’t have such a “gap” where I would’ve knotted them together.
I know you explained it, so, I’m going to try it. Wish me luck! I think first I’ll just try it on different circulars to see if I know what I’m doing. If not, I’ll just keep going on what I already started. I know eventually I’ll be able to do this! Have a great day everyone.

I’m doing DPNs now. I may try the 2-at-a-time method again this winter when I have more time and can concentrate. I’ve tried it several times – sit there with the book open in front of me – manage to get the stitches cast on correctly but then I get messed up and end up starting over. I’ve done that more times than I care to count!

Way to go, Judy!! They look wonderful! It “almost” inspires me to try the 2 circs again. Almost. LOL!! Maybe later this winter, if I’m not so busy.
I had to back up w/ the sock I was knitting. I was working on the foot when I looked for a specific pair of size 2 DPNs for some fingerless mitts. I realized they were in the socks, and I was supposed to change to size 3 after doing the cuff. Had to rip it out back to the cuff. YUCK! If it had been a “first sock” rather than a 2nd sock, I’d have gone with it—but the difference was just too much. LOL!! Eve

WTG!!!

I’m still trying to learn how to knit, let alone knit a sock! lol I can cast on just fine, but once I get the 1st round done, well it never looks right so I pull it out, start over, get frustrated and give up for the time being. Maybe I’ll get it right one day.

After about 5 “start overs,” I’ve finished the cuff on the 2 circs. It’s getting easier, I must say, but I still get the balls tangled between the cables and such. Will this ever end? I don’t try and straighten it all out until I have both needles lying parallel; it’s easier for me to see it all then. Is anyone else experiencing this tangled thingy?

I love the color of the first pair of socks. What color is it and from where? I didn’t knit last night, but I did bind two sides of the I Spy quilt to be donated to AVIVA for a Christmas gift for a child.

Congrats on not giving up and finishing one pair! I haven’t gotten to cast on my 2 @ a Time socks yet. I am still trying to finish up the sleeves to hubby’s sweater. Everything is ready and waiting for me once their done.
