Stars & Stripes Sampler

December 16, 2010

When I was at Ruthie’s retreat in October, one of the girls, Teri, who happened to have about a dozen quilts she was working on and every one of them I wanted . . was working on a Stars & Stripes Sampler from this booklet.

It’s an old book and Teri suggested I look on ebay for it.  I did and found several but then I happened to check Fons & Porter’s website and they have it on sale for $5, about half of what I was going to pay on ebay.  I ordered one and I think the shipping was $2.99 .. not bad at all.

So, I was thinking . . anyone want to do this quilt with me?  I believe Teri’s applique was all done by machine.  That’s definitely how mine will be done.  If you think you might want to do this quilt along with me, maybe a block or two a month, let me know so I can plan out a strategy for getting it done and, you’ll need to order your copy of the booklet.  I have no idea how many they have in stock so don’t procrastinate.  The price is excellent and it’s a beautiful quilt!

By the way, Ruthie is doing the retreat again in 2011.  Information is here.  Unless we move closer to Shipshewana, I’m not planning to go in 2011.  That was a LONG drive coming back but I can’t imagine that there’s a better place for a quilters’ retreat anywhere!  It was so fun and such a great place to spend a few days.  Check it out and see if maybe you can attend in 2011.

Hi Judy, I have been working on this quilt for what seems like ever. I started it about 8 years ago as a class I was teaching (like a BOM), the class petered out and eventually stopped as no students registered for future months. So, then it sat in a box for a while. A couple years ago I took it out and decided I would finish it for Ryan and have it when he came back from deployment, well, I did a few blocks and he’s been back from the army for over a year now and the quilt still isn’t done. I’d love to finish it with you and perhaps you can give me some motivation!!

Judy, Is the whole quilt pictured on the book cover or is it larger? I may be interested in joining.

Much as I would like to join in, I think I will pass on this and concentrate on that massive number of UFO’s.

A bunch of gals at my local guild did this a few years ago and they all turned out lovely. I was looking for the book but was never able to find it. Glad you did!

Hugs!

I’m doing this already…just started it in September, as my BOM challenge project for quilt guild. I have to do more than one block a month, to get it finished in the year, but so far, I’ve kept up to my schedule. I’ve been posting on my blog. So far I have the flag blocks, house blocks, and the declaration star blocks completed. And, it’s all be fabric from my stash! I did buy one new piece of fabric for the eagle’s shield, a fat quarter…but I felt it was perfect for it. You have some catching up to do! ;-)

I just ordered the book too. What fun…I love quilting books. I can at least dream of making everything even if I don’t get the UFO’s done…..

I made this quilt the first year I was quilting — nine years ago now. It was one of my favorite quilts. I learned so much making it. Then when I was “moving out,” my ex said he wanted it – and like a dummy, I gave it to him. I kick myself every time I run across that book on my shelves. Always wanted to make another one, but the timing isn’t good right now. I’ll have to add this to my to-do list, and will watch you all with envy while you’re doing it.

Very pretty! Glad I’m making one for myself! Since I commented on your quilt, I guess I can’t say I’d never seen this design before.

You will enjoy making this quilt. I made it in 2003 for my Army son. It was also my first year of quilting. I did machine applique and a little trapunto on the eagle. Now I would probably do hand applique. Either way it is a neat quilt.

I would love to do this quilt with you but I have already committed to Sharie of Moss Bluff Quilts to do a basket quilt next year and I want to get some of my UFOs done too. I will be watching however for all of the lovely quilts coming out of this adventure.

Did you know Sharie lives just a few houses down from my purple Victorian house that we built in Louisiana? She didn’t live there then but . . she does now. My mom lives in the same subdivision.

I would love to do it also. I remember when Fons and Porter did it on their show quite a few years ago and I wasn’t even a “real” quilter then. Just starting out. I will go now and order the book.

I did this quilt (the large version) as a BOM for my guild several years ago. My top is waiting to be quilted. Everyone else made the smaller version and theirs are done and lovely. I could add it to my UFO list for your Challenge. Your progress might help me stay motivated to finish this one; I still can’t decide if I’m going to hand quilt it (ewwww, lots of seams to deal with!) or find someone to custom quilt it for me.

I have made table runners from this book, but “the eagle” scares me. I think I want to try it. Have had the book for ages and love it.

I’ve ordered the book – I don’t know if I can keep up – I’ve already got a lot on my plate for 2011, but my hubby-man would LOVE the quilt!!!
