Did you know that Saturday, March 19, 2011 . . this coming Saturday . . is National Quilting Day? I didn’t even know til Chad called me today and told me. I was out of town and while I was driving home, I was thinking . . us quilting bloggers cannot let National Quilting Day pass without doing something special so I thought we might want to make a quilt to celebrate the day. Nothing like short notice but you can do it!
Here’s the design I came up with:
Then I tried to come up with some different colored variations — things that aren’t quite so bright. Designing a non-bright quilt is just not something I do well.
Or, whatever you want to use. I’m leaning towards the first version but I haven’t looked at my stash yet. In the first version, the dark blue in the chain goes all the way out into the “sashing” but in the other two versions it does not. For the pattern I share, the chain will go out as it does in version 1.
As it is shown, with 6 borders, the top will be 78″ x 98″. If you leave off all the borders, and then you can do whatever you wish with the borders, the top measures 50″ x 70″. The blocks are 10″ finished. Here are the fabric requirements, per EQ, if you want to dig through your stash. The colors/amounts of fabric correspond to the first version shown. This yardage does not include backing or binding.
Background (where I used pale peach) – 3-3/4 yards
Orange – 1-3/4 yards
Green – 3/4 yards
Navy – 3 yards
Gold – 3/4 yards
Any interest in quilting non-stop for the next three days and having a completed top by the end of the weekend? If you follow along and do it in the steps I give you, I think you’ll be surprised at how quickly it goes together.
I think it’s name shall be “Making Ends Meet”.

Hey Judy…My life is hectic but it sounds like fun!
I like all three versions and your idea for celebrating National Quilt Day, but it’s just not happening here. I work every Saturday at the library. My quilt group meets tonight so maybe I’ll just have to remind everyone that Sat. is a national holiday just for us. Too bad I can’t get time off with pay.
of course, I am in, going to check out what I have in my stash. Can not wait!!
On a side note…. our small quilt group gives a baby quilt to each baby born in the local hospitals on the National Quilt Day. It’s very rewarding.
Love the design, but I won’t be able to participate. I will be at the GSQA Seminar in Baton Rouge this weekend, taking care of business. We’ll miss you this year.
Fabulous idea! I am attending a quilting class on National Quilt Day but could sew the next day!!
The correct name for the day is “National Quilting Day,” not “National Quilt Day.” See the NQA website for the history and more information.
Thanks! I fixed it.
I’ll be sending National Quilting Day at the International Quilt Study and Museum, Linlcoln, NE. We Lincoln Guild is hosting a big celebration! I will be hosting the Quilts of Valor table! You’ll have to travel to NE and visit the museum, it’s awesome!!
I lived in Lincoln as a little girl and my mama loved to quilt. I wish she was still here with me as I would take her there to see it. She would be so excited! I want to go too.
Sounds like great fun! I normally don’t get to have the weekend to myself but since my birthday is Thursday, I will ask for the weekend to sew as my gift. That is PLUS whatever they have already bought me.
Happy Birthday Diane! Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend. Hope your day is great!
I’d love to do this…where will I find the pattern?
looks like a great pattern!
So tempting
It sounds like fun
I’m going to try to join you
It is a busy week for me too, but I sure like this quilt. I am going to try to at least gather fabric together and maybe fit in some cutting between obligations. The bright version appeals to me.
Love it! I’m gonna go with the colors in design #1 except substitute purple for the orange. I will use my stash and I don’t have any orange.
I think I may be able to do this.
I am going to check out my stash….
This is a great idea! I love the design. Count me in.
I love the idea, Judy, but my quilt guild’s 28th annual quilt show is that weekend and I’ll be there working it both days. You’ll just have to have fun without me, sister quilters!
i think i’m gonna try this one!! looks rather quick and simple, relatively speaking! LOVE the bright version the best!! so interesting the way you designed the block to float over and beyond the very border! can’t wait to get started! how long did it take you to think this one up? geeeeze, you’re quick!
I love the quilt! My quilting buddies and I are having a 3 day sew-in this weekend. Admittedly the weekend was planned around a bowling tournament, not National Quilting Day – but that will be our little secret. I already have a quilt cut out to work on this weekend and a second one nearly cut out, so I may have to wait on this one.
I love the pattern and the color ways are beautiful. I’d love to join you for National Quilting Day. Thanks for making this happen for us.
Love the pattern! will it be available on EQ too?
It’s going to rain all weekend here in “sunny california”, so I’m in for doing something creative!
sounds very tempting, and I’ll struggle to get it done as I’m now at work, but I’ll give it a go!
Looks wonderful!
Love the patterns but I’m literally ROFL, I’ve got way too much on my plate to play along. I’ll live vicariously through my bloggers!
Fantastic quilt! I can’t start this right away, but it will go to the top of the list! Thank you for sharing this quilt.
Should I start something new, absolutely! Do I have time to, no. But somewhere along the way, I’ll make time.
Especially because the 19th is my birthday! And this looks like a beautiful quilt one just can’t resist.
If you are within driving distance of Lincoln, NE on Saturday, you will not be disappointed going to the Quilt Museum. It is awesome. I and a group of friends from both Nebraska and Kansas are planning a road trip. We plan to meet at the museum.
I really wish I could join you all, but I’ll certainly enjoy following along! I’m celebrating National Quilt Day by donating a large chunk of my unused stash to the local guild for their charity initiative–that counts toward busting, right?
Tempting… but for every UFO I’ve gotten done, I’ve started something else… (plus bought a magazine & book for projects within.) Losing ground!
Made an executive decision to switch UFO project numbers for March. #9 is #3 now. Hand quilting my finger tips into oblivion!
Count me in on the fun! Thanks Judy.
I will be saving these instructions and playing along with you this summer……
I am printing these instructions, but will not be able to do any piecing until probably Monday, I have to work on Saturday, and must clean the salon on Sunday afternoon, so hopefully can sew on Monday, I will make that my national quilting day, by the way, I’m quite sure I have enough fabric in my stash to make at least one of these
