Stash Report – Week 12, 2011
This past week, I used 5-3/4 yards for the brown quilt and 9-1/2 yards for the Making Ends Meet quilt, per EQ‘s fabric requirements. Nothing was added.
Used this Week: 15.25 yards
Used year to Date: 88.50 yards
Added this Week: 0
Added Year to Date: 0
Net Used for 2011: 88.50 yards
How’d you do this week? For those who have been stashbusting for a while, is it getting easier to use the fabric? When do you feel your strongest when trying to bust the stash and what makes you feel like going to the quilt shop and buying a yard of everything?

Are you up early today Judy. I usually post on a Monday from here (Australia) as this post normally comes after I;ve gone to bed for the night.
I bought myself the GO for christmas and that is definitely helping me us up some of my smaller pieces of fabric. I am still tempted at the quilt shop and JoAnns but I am a lot more selective at what I buy. I am slowly collecting batiks but other than that I only buy if I need something for the current project I am working on or the next project.
yep, it’s definitely easier to use the fabric now that i’ve got it organized into projects.
That was the key for me. When i had my stash sorted into colors i never had enough. but now i can be totally without a color in my stash and it doesn’t bother me in the least, because i know that i don’t need it for any future project.
Another thing that helps me is to keep track of (and appreciate) the quilts I’ve already made.
I’m making bed quilts now, so keeping track of which month i’ll use them on the bed is another way to put the brakes on ‘just one more quilt”. the added bonus is that i can look forward to sleeping under the variety of finished quilts from my quilt stash.
As the fabric stash shrinks, the finished quilt stash grows, and my craving for ‘just one more’ is well satisfied–and amazed that i was the one who made them! it just doesn’t get any better than that.
It is getting easier to manage the stash. Tracking the stash numbers was a big eye opener for me, plus doing an assessment of what I already had and where the holes were has really affected what I buy now. I think the biggest difference was really deciding what my goals were and what needed to be done to meet them.
Great stash busting numbers for you this week. Almost to 100 yards out and we’re not even through a quarter of the year. Way to go Judy!
I started off so strongly this year…really not having anything coming in other than my commitments such as BOMs and clubs previously signed up for. Lately though…the pull of the cute new fabrics has been too strong and I’ve caved more than once. The good news is that I’m still sewing and making small victories here and there. I guess that’s all that matters…and I’m still having fun!
More than anything, the numbers make me want to finish up UFO’s and put numbers in the “used” column. When I think about my stash report being in the black, barely, it does make me stop in the shops and ask myself, “do I need this fabric for a project or will it sit on my shelf for a few years?”
When I’m sewing a lot, I don’t purchase as much. I haven’t sewn hardly at all in the past six months, so poking buttons is keeping me interested in quilting. That’s a poor excuse, I know, because I buy a lot of fabric all the time, but the purchases do keep me dreaming about sewing even when I can’t.
I am so glad you asked this question today because I have not been stashbusting at all so far this year! I have learned some really good tips from the ladies on how to stash bust, so hopefully that will hellp.
I love buying fabric, but my numbers this week were a real eye-opener for me. I’m buying way more than I’m using! I think I will have to switch to a buying only when I need something for a specific project policy!
As always, thank you so much for hosting this link up every week! I really do enjoy it even if it isn’t slowing my spending!
I’m with Kathy–other than batiks, I’m only buying what I need for a current project. But as I told one of the owners of my local quilt shop yesterday, after being unable to find a batik for a current project, the way to sell me piles of fabric is to have a lot of gorgeous batiks in your shop!
Happy Spring!
Jeanne
I still have to fight the urge to buy fabric, but I’m sure I’ll be better when I return to my stash in April! I’ve done better this year than in the past, and will be making more “kits” to bring south next winter.
It is satisfying to finish a project that was finished without buying any extra fabric, and I don’t think that the projects are suffering for it. Once I get home, my numbers should improve all the time!
I had a bunch to go out this week–donated to the local guild for charity initiatives. I find that if I’m sewing more, I’m actually buying less. Weeks when I don’t have the opportunity to sit at the machine much, I often find myself doing a little online shopping instead. Seems counter intuitive, but that’s how my odd self works!
Every week I’m just sure you’ll have bought something. Man, that must be quite a stash!
Thanks for hosting the Stash Reports. I’m much more selective with what i buy. I agree with Meg, the more I sit at the machine the less time I spend online. And, the more I sew the less solitaire I play. Just this change makes me feel better — and productive.
I guess overall the stash busting is going ok. So far I have bought less & more selective, but always seem to be short on sewing time. Finishing up UFO’s is the key for me right now. And with all the appeals for charity quilts here or in Japan, there are lots of reasons to get some smaller ones done and donated!
I’m doing these reports more out of curiosity to see how much I buy or use during the course of the year. But, I have found that it is making me think twice about buying verse using what I already have.
Oh dear
I’m happy with my stash numbers. I’ve learned to buy ONLY if I absolutely need fabric for a CURRENT project. If it’s not “right now”-it can wait. I appreciate my “noodle” box. I love to pull strips out to use.
Did you get Making Ends Meet quilted? Or are you on to something else? I’m buying only when I need to… Sandi
I still buy – but generally not just simply to add to the stash like before. I pick and choose a bit more rather than needing everything I see.
The numbers are a real eye opener – especially when you attach $7, $8, $9 or more a yard to them.
I am buying only what I need to finish a project. My focus is on my UFO’s at present. I worked a quilt show this weekend, and my downfall was thread!! I really needed to add to my stash here, right?? You never have too much thread either, especially when you don’t know what you will need. The prices do keep me grounded though. Here’s my stash report this week. Thanks for hosting. Dar
Used this Week: 2 yards (pillowcases)
Used year to Date: 14.72 yards
Added this Week: .67 yard
Added Year to Date: 8.67 yds

I love taking out backings, because it adds a lot to the used column. I’ve been very good about NOT buying anything this year so far. I haven’t had one of those urges hit me for a long time. I’ve also been working mainly on projects that I’ve already counted the fabric for. I’ll be glad to get to “shop at home” again soon.
Not much stash busting happened here. At least I didn’t add too much either!
Great job! You are doing great…
I have been enjoying sewing from my stash…
I had a good stash busting week this week..finished two quilts…and one was completely from scraps!
It was nice to have a week with ZERO in and a good amount OUT for a change.
Better late than never. I went through and cut a TON of flannel up over the weekend for use in future projects!
