Blackthorn Needles

Edit to Add:

The Blackthorn folks saw my post on Ravelry and contacted me about the splintered needle and they are sending me a replacement.  This morning I wrote to The Loopy Ewe, where I had purchased it and didn’t hear anything back from them . . which kind of surprised me.  But, Blackthorn is sending me a new needle and that’s what matters in the end and they did it before I even notified them that I had a problem.

This morning when I was starting to knit the test cable socks, I decided to use my brand new Blackthorn needles so I could let you all know what I think about them.

They say “The feel of wood, the strength of steel.”  They feel good in my hands.  They are expensive but if they’re as strong as steel, they should last a very long time.

Not so!  I had barely cast on when one of them splintered.

I switched over to a pair of bamboo since I wanted to knit these socks with 2.5 mm needles and I don’t have 2.5 mm in the Quicksilver needles, which are my favorites.  The house is going to be shown in the morning so my knitting got interrupted with some house cleaning but I hope to make a bit of progress tonight.

Paraphernalia

For my non-knitting quilting friends, I feel the need to apologize for the lack of quilting lately.  Please stick with me . . I will get back to quilting eventually.

The Loopy Ewe’s Camp Loopy Project II starts on July 15.  We cannot cast on . . no matter how badly we want to do it . . til July 15.  I have decided to use the Paraphernalia pattern and those cables look just a bit intimidating so I’m going to practice on another pair of socks so that when July 15 gets here, I’ll be ready to hit the deck running and hopefully not have to do any ripping. No doubt, the socks I’m starting today will get set aside in less than two days when I can start on the real Project II.

After looking at all the completed Paraphernalia socks on Ravelry, I’m wondering if my Composition Book Gray sock yarn isn’t going to be too mottled for the cables to show up nicely.  The socks where the cables show up best are the mostly 100% solid yarns but I’m still going to use the Composition Book Gray because that’s what I ordered for the project and it’s wound into a ball and ready to go.

Even though it’s not solid either, this yarn happened to be sitting on my coffee table and saved me a trip downstairs to look for something else.  How’s that for putting a lot of effort into deciding what to use?

This is Bugga in Bog Fritillary.  Bugga yarn is one of my favorites.  70% superwash merino, 20% cashmere and 10% nylon.  How can you not love that combination? If you click on the Bugga link, I’m really trying to be strong and not order the Green Long-Legged Fly and Smiley Face Spider.  How can you not want yarn with those names?

Anyone out there wanting to try cables?  You can download the pattern, grab a skein of yarn and knit along with me so I’m not knitting all alone!  :)

No cooking, no cleaning, no grass cutting today — I’m knitting.

My Idea of a Dream Job

When I asked dream jobs, I didn’t tell you about my ideas of a dream job.  I have several ideas of things I would like to do but mostly I’m just dreaming.  When I worked at a real job, I had two of the best jobs ever and I would go back to either of those jobs any day . . if I needed a work outside the home type job.  I realize having two jobs that were great was pretty lucky but here are ideas I’ve had about things I’d like to do.

1.  When we were in Kentucky, they were building new elementary schools and they would sell off some of the older elementary schools.  Most were old and pretty small as far as schools go.  I always dreamed of renovating one of the old schools and having a wing of sleeping quarters, then a wing of sewing rooms — sewing machines, long arm machines, cutting tables all set up.  I would have laundry facilities and have a place set up where we could dye fabric.  If I suddenly had 48 hours in my day, I would have an herb garden where visitors could experience fresh herbs and then, of course, a huge kitchen and eating area where meals would be served, fresh herbs would be used and canning classes could be taught.  The plan was to have classes — people could sign up for a few days of classes on the longarm, or for canning classes or they could just come and spend a few days to get away from home — sew, or quilt or work in the garden and have all their meals provided.  I figured I’d have facilities for men (bathrooms/showers) so if someone’s husband or even men quilters wanted to come, they’d be welcome too.

2.  A bed and breakfast.  That was mentioned by others too.  I would love to have a B&B with pretty gardens, have yummy snacks in the evenings and breakfast in the mornings.  I’d have beautiful bedrooms with lots of quilts and fresh flowers in the rooms.

3.  Another idea I’ve had is to have meals to go.  I would publish the menu for the week on a website and people would order at least 24 hours ahead of time, pay and then come to the drive-thru and pick it up, all packaged and ready to go.  They’d have “home cooked” meals at home without having to cook or clean up a mess.  Say Wednesday was Spinach meatloaf, scalloped potatoes, seasoned green beans, fruit salad, homemade rolls and a choice of a slice of either coconut, chocolate or buttermilk pies.  Customers would have to order before the end of the day on Tuesday and they would say they wanted 2 adult servings, 2 child servings and their pie would be 2 coconuts, 1 chocolate and 1 buttermilk slice.  They would pay online using a credit card and then pick up their food at a drive through.  The food would be taken home, heated if necessary (hot food would be hot when they picked it up).

The food idea would have to be done in a separate building because kitchens have to be inspected and licensed and that doesn’t happen with a dog in the house.

Just ideas — probably not something we’ll ever do but you never know about us!  :)
