Each month, when the new color is posted, a link box will be added for the previous month’s project.

The info about the challenge is shown below:

The 2012 Color Challenge is so exciting.  I can hardly wait to get started.

For the Color Challenge, 2012 Patchwork Times is teaming up with Vicki Welsh at Field Trips in Fiber for an exciting “push your limits” color challenge.  Vicki creates gorgeous hand dyed fabrics and for several years, she has used a photo as her inspiration to create color palettes. If you aren’t familiar with her palette creations, please spend some time on her blog and you will find lots of color palettes inspired by photos.

For our color challenge in 2012, each month we are going to use a palette created by Vicki.  Some of the palettes will have coordinating fabrics available for purchase but you are not required to use them.  You may use one or all of the colors in the palette. Let it be a jumping off point for your own creativity. You may create a small art piece (postcard, wall hanging), a bag, a quilt of any size — most anything you want just so it’s finished by the end of the month, photographed and a link to your photo is added to the link box.

A winner each month will be chosen and that winner will receive a fat quarter pack of hand dyed fabric of your choice from Vicki’s shop.

On January 1, 2012, both here and on Vicki’s blog, the photo of the January challenge palette will be posted.  Be thinking about projects you can start and finish in one month and be ready to push your limits as far as using colors together that you may not have used together before. The color palette challenge is a great way to extend your personal color library. Some of the palettes will not be to your liking. We hope you will work with them anyway, even in a small project, to expand your horizons. Concurrent with the Color Palette Challenge, Vicki will be running a series of color theory articles on her blog throughout the year. Be sure to follow her blog so you don’t miss these articles. It will be like a free class in color theory.

Please plan to join us in 2012 for our color challenge!  If you’re planning to participate and want a blog button to show you’re participating, here it is:

Over on the right sidebar, you can copy the code and it put it in your sidebar and show others that you’re participating.  The page that the button links back to will have links to each month’s entries.

I would so love to play, but very seldom do I start AND finish a project in the same month.

You know what you can do but I see it as a chance to learn a whole lot about color, whether we need it or not! :) You can make a pot holder or a post card or a table runner! It doesn’t have to be a whole quilt.

But also . . you can learn from Vicky’s lessons without making a thing!

Sounds like lots of fun. I want to make quilts for the Alzheimer’s Project – so this will be a perfect format for that!

If you are not familiar with Ami Simms and her Alzheimer’s Art Quilts that are auctioned so that money may go to further research on the cure for Alzheimer’s Disease – go to

http://www.alzquilts.org/

Thanks JUDY – what a fun Challenge for 2012!

Wow, my two favorite bloggers in one quilty collaboration! I’m excited for both of you — and for all of us too — and am going to grab the button for my blog. What a fun combination of talents this is going to be.

I participated in the Color Palette Challenge last year in an unusual way, but it worked! I had downloaded BOM paper-pieced mini blocks from somewhere online, and used the monthly color palette to pick one of the blocks and make it for that month. Worked great! I blogged about it here: http://scrapsofhappiness.blogspot.com/2011/05/qov-and-color-challenge.html and here: http://scrapsofhappiness.blogspot.com/2011/04/whoop-and-color-challenge.html just to give you an idea how it worked. It was fun! And I look forward to participating again here!

I’ve put the button on my page and it goes back to your home page. Once this thing starts, are you going to change the linking so it goes to a page that summarizes the yearly activity, including links to Vicki’s color theory posts? Your current year monochromatic button goes to a wonderful summary page.

Thanks….

It sounds like a fun project and create way to be pushed outside one’s comfort zone. I’d love to play along as much as possble, even though it might become difficult some months with a new baby due end of this year/early next year. I’ll give it a try though

Oh my goodness, am I REALLY thinking about doing this? LOL.
I can’t finish anything in just one month! I can finish a top, but when it comes to quilting & binding….. uhhh….

But I put the blog button up, so I’ll give it a try! :)

I already put the button on my blog, that I’m trying to revive, as it was almost in a coma LOL.

I love color, so this sounds like fun! I do a bit of hand dyeing and also handpaint on silk scarves, so I may get some new ideas here!

I also signed up for the FMQ challenge, so perhaps I can quilt my color pieces the month after (and finish them).

Judy – Do you know of any way to “proof” or validate the colors that print from an inkjet printer from an online source? When I try to print this month’s palette from Vicki’s site, I am getting a dark burgundy sort of color for the last color, with sort of a muddy looking mauve as the lighter version of it. On my computer’s screen it looks purple. I am guessing that what I see on the screen is more accurate. Do you know of any way to tweak what prints? Thanks, Claudia W
