Turkeys

My hope is that we never lose our enthusiasm about living out here.  Several times a day we comment to each other that this is the place we’ve always dreamed of having. Every time I pass a window, I stop and look in all directions I can see just to see what’s out there.  Mostly we see cute little birds, an ugly vulture who has claimed the top of our utility pole and lots of deer.

Yesterday dad and Vince left mid-morning to go to Comanche, and then to Stephenville to look for a tractor and a UTV.  Mom and I headed to Santa Anna to a quilt shop.  Right before dad and Vince got home, I was in the kitchen cooking and looked out through the glass doors and there were turkeys!
I counted five turkeys out there.  They hung around for a while and didn’t fly off when I walked out on the porch to get a better picture.

A couple of them flew right over my head but most of them ran through the woods.

Such a neat sight to be able to look out and see wild turkeys in the yard.  This truly is our dream place!

Skewed Conversations

Vince and I figured that when mom and dad saw our property, they’d want to move here.  Dad loves it .. loves the wildlife and the open spaces with no restrictions.  Mom, on the other hand, loves the city life.  She loves going to town often, going out to eat often, visiting with her friends.  What really matters, and the reason they’ll never consider moving here is that the great grandkids live just a few miles from them but they know they can come here any time they want.  They can come to visit or we can build them a little cabin near our little house.

Maybe the problems with the conversations Vince and I have are with me and not with Vince.  Mom and I were talking.  Vince and dad were out running errands.  I was in the kitchen and she was sitting on the sofa.

Me:  What would you do if dad really wanted to move here?
Mom: Fine with me. He can do whatever he wants.
Me: If he wanted to move here, you wouldn’t complain.
Mom: No, he really likes A & W  Root Beer and we keep it at home.
Me: MOM! I said “If dad really wanted to move here, what would you say  . . I didn’t say “Does Dad like root beer“?

Then we both had a good laugh.

While they’re here, we’re constantly saying “Where’s Speck?”  Dad goes in and out 100 times a day — looking for deer or turkey or tracks or something — and since they’re not used to having a dog, he doesn’t remember to make sure Speck doesn’t escape.

Mom was sitting on the sofa quilting and I was in the kitchen.  I heard her say “Speck?” but thought she was talking to him and then she said she couldn’t find him.  I asked her to check under the blanket at the end of the sofa but she said he wasn’t there.  I walked into the family room to see where he might be . .

. . and I said “Mom, could that be Speck sitting right next to you?”  I am not laughing at her . . I do the same thing.  I spend more time looking for stuff that’s right under my nose but we did get another good laugh at mom losing Speck.

2012 UFO Challenge Participants’ List of Projects

Here’s where we all post a link to our list of 12 projects we hope to complete in 2012.

2012 UFO List

It’s kinda hard making my list because all my projects aren’t here and I can’t even remember what needs to be done on which projects but here’s 12 that I hope to get done next year. Later on this morning I’ll post a link box where UFO Challenge 2012 participants can link up with their own lists. Here’s mine:

1.  Vince’s quilt.  Top is done  – it needs to be quilted and bound.

2.  It’s a Wrap.  Top is done – it needs to be quilted and bound.

3.  Bright Stars.  Top is done – it needs to be quilted and bound.

4.  Halloween Quilt – Top is done.  it needs quilting and binding.

5.  Indigo – Top is done – it needs quilting and binding.

6. Red/Cream Log Cabin – some blocks are done.  I don’t even know how many are done.

7. Big Star – There were enough blocks to make one large quilt but I divided it up into two smaller quilts.  One of the smaller quilts needs to be made.

8.  Bright Stars on White – Blocks are made.  Needs to be put together, quilted and bound.

9.  Dandelion Parade – Can’t even remember where I left off with that one.

10. Bears in the Farmhouse – Surely I’ll get it finished this year!

11.  Red/Green Carpenter’s Square top – Some of the half square triangles are made.

12.  Brown with scrappy quarter square triangle.
