Herbs in a Tube

My preference is to grow my herbs and when I can’t grow them, to buy them fresh but even that doesn’t always work out.  With everything going on around here, I’m not even going to ask for a place to grow herbs.  I may end up with them in pot this first summer here, assuming I can figure out a way to keep the deer out of them.  Vince will eventually fence off a spot for a garden but that may not even happen this year.

Buying fresh herbs at our local grocery stores is hit and miss.  Sometimes they have them and they look good; sometimes they have them and I wouldn’t use them if they gave them to me (which they’ve never offered to do) and sometimes, they just don’t have them.

I’ve been real happy with these Gourmet Garden herbs in a tube.

Almost all the time I have fresh cilantro and fresh garlic but every now and then, I don’t.  These tubes last forever where the cilantro I buy in the store often doesn’t look very good and is horrible after a few days in the fridge.  Til I can get my own herb garden, I’m real happy to have these tubes in my fridge.

  • I’ve used these, too, and really like them. And they do keep for a long time. A local chef recommended them to me, otherwise I probably would have never tried them.

    Interesting, I’ve never seen those! Are they found in the produce section? I’m going to look, I too love fresh herbs!

    I grow all my own but can’t seem to have any luck w/the basil in the greenhouse. So, I started using that and really do love it. The only negative is you don’t have the greenery for the garnish. But, for flavor, it’s fabulous and so convenient.

    I’ve never seen those, either….sounds like I should try to find them.

  • I think I saw those recently, I don’t remember if it was at Krogers or Wal-Mart. I wondered if they were any good. Thanks for mentioning them.

    I strongly agree that if you sear your meat, brown your vegetables and deglaze the pan your food will taste much better! I have the Cuisinart that sears right in the slow cooker; much less messy and saves one pan!

  • I use those and they are wonderful, way better than the dried version I used to use.

    Basil is the only thing I can’t keep going through the winter so will look for some of that. I didn’t get enough dried before cold got it. I am also seeing pots in the garden center so will start some soon.

    I love your design wall Mondays; it is great to see what everyone is up to.
    Carpet ruined in sewing room was a close thing, hope the fix doesn’t take too long. And a bucket of wheat, you sure know when to bite your tongue!

    I noticed that one of the herbs in the tube is lemon grass. How do you use the lemon grass? I received a gift of a variety of boxed spices and lemon grass is one of them, but I don’t think I ever made a recipe that called for lemon grass.

    Grace — lemon grass is used in different Asian dishes. If you’ve ever had Tom Yum soup at a Thai restaurant, it probably had lemon grass in it.

  • I also have these Herbs in a Tube in the fridge. They are handy, and better than trying to keep fresh herbs on hand. Or growing them—-We have wonderful Farmers markets, roadside veggie & fruits stands everywhere here in Sonoma county. We don’t garden for the two of us anymore when Herbs in a tube and all the other wonderful fresh food resources are available. We still can’t resist planting a few cherry tomato plants. But, otherwise are gardening days are over.

  • Thanks for the recommend. I had one of these in my hand the other day wondering if they were any good. I would love to grow my own herbs, but I don’t know how: how much to plant, how to keep them from bolting, how to not decimate the plant when picking for cooking, how to keep the plant producing. Can you recommend a good resource? I tried putting them in small pots in the window last year but could never get enough to supply my daughters’ cooking. We have thrown away so many mushy herbs since my daughters started cooking 6 months ago. Buy a bundle, they use what they need for the one recipe and the rest goes to waste. When I asked them what they wanted in the garden this year, they all said “HERBS”.

    Judy… have you tried towel drying the basil and cilantro leaves and putting them in jars and air sealing like the salad? I bet they would stay for well over 2 weeks that way…..

    By the way… the jars of salad in my fridge have become a conversation starter… LOL

  • Where in the store are these herb tubes found? I haven’t seen them before.

    My hubby showed up with these after a shopping trip to Dillon’s (a Kroger store). Since I have a brown thumb I think they are the best thing since sliced bread (although I like homemade sliced bread!).

    I’ve often wondered how good those herbs in a tube were. They are rather pricey and it’s good to know they will keep.

    I usually buy fresh herbs when I can but if not I use dried..I’ve seen these but haven’t tried them before….now I will because I know they must be good if you use them.

    we love these in Australia. You can freeze them too. Very handy
