My Sweet Dog
It’s been a rough day for Speck and for Speck’s mom. He had some lumps — one on his neck (if you enlarge the photo you might be able to see it above his leg there — I’m not looking); one on his chest kinda between his front legs and one near his “privates”. We had a biopsy on one of them a while back so we knew it was just a fatty lump but it was growing. It was the one on his neck and Vince knows someone here who had a dachshund who had one there and it got so big it was dragging the ground and the dog had to be put to sleep. If the lumps get too big, there are veins and tissue in them and then they can’t be removed.
When I took Speck to have his nails cut earlier this week, the vet felt the lump in his neck and said we really needed to get it out before it got much bigger so we had that done this morning. I had to have him at the vet bright and early and I almost cry every time I have to leave him.
They called me around noon and said he could come home. He has 5 or 6 stitches in each cut, he doesn’t seem to be hurting but he’s confused. I’m sure he’s uncomfortable, knows something is different but isn’t quite sure what it is . . but he’s on the road to recovery and we have pain pills we can give him. I will be glad when he’s back to normal.
Several years ago when I was visiting Vicky, she had her dachshund, Daisy, at the time. Vicky had a harness that didn’t fit Daisy so she gave it to me for Speck but with his cuts, he can’t wear it for a few days so he’s back to wearing a collar but I only put it on him when he’s going outside. He looks so “naked” without his red harness.

Oh I know what you mean.. our pets are so important to us.. I liken to when I had babies… you can’t tell or explain anything to them.. leaving my Tag at the groomers is about too much for me.
Poor mom. Our dogs are 12 and 13 years old and in excellent health for their age, even though one is a cancer amputee (a tripod!). But I notice more and more often how much less energy they have, and my heart grows heavy (I’m crying here at my desk at work typing this… thinking about them). Our Bassett, Lucy, has quite a few fatty lumps, but so far, no problems with them. I wish Speck a very speedy recovery!
Our animal friends, I refuse to call them “pets”… what would we ever do without them. I will never get over losing my “soul mate” cat friend in Oct 2010. He will haunt my soul until I can finally see him again at the Rainbow Bridge…. along with all my fur and feather friends. It will be a glorious reunion!
Aw, poor Speck hope he’s feeling better soon.
Oh, Speck…I know just how you feel, Judy. I’m hoping he’s back to normal soon, too.
Keeping good thoughts for your sweet Specks.
Poor Baby! Poor Judy! Isn’t it wonderful that the vet can help him though, it’s a blessing to have good care for our animals. As much as I loved our many cats, I never truly understood how much a dog can mean to a person until I met Dolly. She’s a huge part of my life now, and it’s only been 2 and a bit years. When she’s Speck’s age I’ll be even more besotted.
Get well soon Speck.
Give him a kiss from Penny and me! Poor sweetie. It’s so confusing to them … and it breaks our heart to have to hurt them to make them better.
I chuckle every time I see a picture of Speck with that red harness. Who’d have thought I’d have a brand new one for him hanging in the closet? Oh, yeah, the leash stash!
I’m glad Speck is home and hope his recovery is a quick one. Maybe he is disoriented as all the anesthesia might not be out of his system.
Poor Speck. But he’ll be good as new soon.
I know how you feel, Judy. I have children and grandchildren but my dogs and cats are my constant companions day in and day out they share every moment of my day. I hope Speck recovers quickly!
Poor little guy! He is on the road to recovery though!!
Max had his teeth cleaned today and with it being Friday the 13th, I kept telling him to stay away from the bright light. He had 4 teeth pulled and is resting, but he really wants to eat all the food in the house. lol
Dear Speck’s Mom,
It will be OK, really. Speck will recover and won’t even remember it, Maybe!~ lol
Everyone understands how you feel, looks like Papa Speck is not too happy either. It is amazing how much our animal friends touch our lives.
Hugs and treats to Speck!
Beth
Poor speck…I thought of him and you today for some reason, guess after reading this I know why. Hope he feels better by morning….leaving them at the vet is not a happy time!
I hope tomorrow is a better day for you and Speck. I know it is rough to make them feel worse to get better. Hugs for both of you.
Best wishes and a speedy recovery to little Speck.
Poor dear Speck. He will be good as new in a few days and it is so wonderful that the vet was able to remove the lumps without problem. I hope his recovery is speedy and he is back to dachshund self soon.
Hugs to you and to Speck. I’m sorry!
Glad to hear he I’d recovering well. I just lost Dutch in December so I well know the heartbreak when they don’t. Turmeric will also help reduce infection and as an anti inflammatory.

It’s good to get those sebacious cysts removed. I think every one of our four legged family members have had to have that done one time or another. It’s probably more traumatic for Mom and Dad than it is for them! Speck will be back to his old self in a day or two!
Aw. Ozzie sends some healing vibes to Speck. Oz has only had one surgery in his life — his neutering. He came home and laid on my chest and cried most of the night. I felt horrible. He seemed so miserable, even with the pain pills. Hopefully, any other surgeries are a long way off.
Wishing Speck a speedy recovery. Poor little guy. Actually, lucky little guy –he’s got a good, supportive home and family.
Wishing you and Speck the best, I have been lucky so far with my bunch, nothing more than immunizations although my oldest one has allergies pretty bad and I am constantly having to give him allergy pills. Just looking at his face I felt bad for him but know this will make him better.
All our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Tink (my black & tan doxie) & Pie (my longhaired piebald doxie) & Carmen
Dear Judy

beautiful day: Edit
Poor Speck! Sounds like you have a good vet – glad they got the lump off now and hope he (and you) recovers quickly.
Hope Speck s feeling better today.
Poor Speck! Hope he feels like his old self soon. I know, we hate to see our pets suffering. We suffer with them. Have a good weekend!
My husband had 2 of these taken off his back and really it was no big deal; he didn’t even need any pain meds. Speck is probably having anesthetic hangover. Speck will be fine and less lumpy!
Get well soon, Speck!
All the best to Speck (and Speck’s Mom!) and hoping that he is feeling himself tomorrow. Our male longhaired dachsie Loki has those lumps as well (we also had one biopsed and it was fatty tissue and he has quite a few but they are still quite flat and small, although we’re keeping an eye on them). Our vet also told us about how some can grow so large they drag on the ground or interfere with eating (if in the throat area) so we keep watch on him. He’s our lumpy boy! Lotsa doggie cuddles from Loki, Pandie (our smooth cream dachsie female) and from yours truly!
I hope Speck’s recovery is quick! I am so sorry he had to go through the procedure. I’m glad he has pain killers to help him.
Judy,
Our old dog had lumps and bumps all over him and periodically had to have them removed. I know it is hard, but honestly, the first 24 hours after the op are the worst. After that, everything goes completely back to normal and Speck won’t even remember he had them in the first place.
Still it’s a great excuse for giving him some extra dog biscuits!
Happy recovery to you both!
It’s the worst, isn’t it? You do what you know is best for them, but they don’t get it. They’re just so darn pitiful when they’re feeling punk.
Yesterday I had to unexpectedly put my 15 year old cat down. I did nothing but cry all day, and so far today I’ve about done the same. Give Speck chin scritches for me, will you?
