Cooking for the Retreat

This morning was “take out the stitches” day.  I was so afraid he wasn’t going to take them out but he did and I got an even smaller bandage.  Wednesday I can get it wet in the shower and in another week, I can wash dishes.  Vince has done a great job keeping the kitchen clean and since I began cooking for the retreat today, I figured I’d have mercy on him and get myself some rubber gloves so my kitchen duties have resumed.

I’m not bringing gourmet food to the retreat but it will be enough to keep us from starving and to keep us from having to go out and eat.  There are only a couple of restaurants – nothing name brand and they’d both probably be in shock if 30+ folks walked in at once.

In the crockpots are roasts that will make BBQ beef sandwiches.  On the stove are two pots of Taco soup.  Tomorrow I’ll make white bean & chicken chili.  There’s not a stove where we’re meeting so we needed all things I can stick in crock pots to heat up.

We’ll also have sandwich making supplies and snacks folks are bringing.  The food I’m making today and tomorrow will go into the freezer, which will keep it fresh from today til we start eating it, and it will make it easier to get it out to the retreat spot without it spilling in my car!

I’m still working on getting my projects ready for the retreat.  When you go to retreats, do you always take about 10 times more stuff than you’ll get done?  I do!  I spend so much time getting too much ready.  I’m trying not to do that this time.

Husbands!

You all will agree that when I cook, I cook a lot and it’s almost always good stuff.  The last week, with my bum finger, I haven’t cooked much.  We ate out of the freezer and we ate out too much.  Vince has about had enough!  He called a while ago and he asked about dinner.  While my finger isn’t truly hindering my cooking, everything I offered to fix didn’t sound good.  I’m cooking for the retreat and there’s just so much you can do in one small kitchen!

He decided he’d go by Brookshire’s and get a roasted chicken if they had any and I can fix homestyle potatoes (chunks of potatoes browned with onions and bell peppers).  He was going to call and make sure what time Brookshire’s has fresh chickens coming out.  I got this email:

They will be ready at the store around 4:30 so I will be home after I pick it up.

Anyone feel sorry for him?  I do not!

February Color Palette Challenge

Are y’all keeping up with Vicki’s lessons?  Last week’s lesson was great and I’ve learned something from every one of them.  Vicki says she’s no expert but I’m telling you . . she is an expert!  We’re so lucky to have her lessons coincide with the color palette challenge and to be able to benefit from Vicki’s knowledge for free!  Don’t pass up the opportunity.  Honestly, when she and I first talked about doing this project, I thought “I know nothing about color and this is going to shine a bright light on how much I don’t know.”  But, then I decided it was ok.  I’m going to use my stash and no matter what Vicki says, I’ll just keep doing what I was doing but after reading her lessons, it has definitely changed some of how I think about my fabric choices.

Speaking of fabric choices, my fabric selections for the February Color Palette Challenge are still sitting in the floor where I left them on about February 3.

Some days I step over them; some days I step on them; every day I say:  I need to get busy on that project!  I’m going to get all my pieces cut and take it to work on at the retreat this week.  I sure hope I’m staying at the retreat for at least a week because it will take me that long to get everything done!  Maybe I’ll stay 2 weeks!  :)

Have I shown the project I’m planning to do?

Yep, I’d better start burning the midnight oil if I’m going to get that top finished in February!
