Getting Ready for the Retreat

At least one retreater has checked into the hotel and reported that it’s very nice.  I’m so glad to hear that!  The food is all cooked.  Tonight Vince and I are having dinner with the folks who are arriving early.  I won’t sleep a wink tonight . . I should just go out to the hotel and convince the manager to let me set up the machine and sew all night.

There’s a three part series on making quilts that are straight and square that will appear on the blog over the next few days and I’ll be posting updates from the retreat so for those who are retreating with us in spirit, check in often.

The best part — one of the retreaters is bringing a box of heirloom tomatoes for us to have on our sandwiches . . though I may buy tasteless tomatoes from the store and hide the heirlooms in my room.  That’s just the kind of girl I am!  :)

A Blog Issue

Don’t ask me what I did but I did something and messed up the blog so I had to revert back to one of my older themes.  Things may not look right and may not be completely right but it’s the best I can do right now so please bear with me.  I don’t have time to deal with it til after the retreat so I hope things are ok .. enough . . til next week!

An Ugly Quilt

Who says there’s no such thing as an ugly quilt?  I’m not real sure what I was thinking when I made this top.

I think it’s the brown that’s causing the problem.  From what I remember, I had cut too many brown pieces for another quilt and instead of letting those go to waste, I put them with a bunch of rectangles I had cut for another project.  You know if Bonnie Hunter had pulled together leftover pieces from several quilts, it would have been a show stopper.  This is what I ended up with and this proves that I can never be anything other than a planned-out-everything-must-match type quilter!

I’m going to come up with a pieced border because I’m determined this is not going to stay ugly!  The lavender and purple fabrics are Michael Miller Krystal fabrics.  There’s no way those fabrics can be used in an ugly quilt.

Think it’s possible for this quilt to end up looking good?  OK .. maybe not . . but can it look halfway good?

Have you ever had an accidental ugly quilt?  If so, please share your story and make me feel better!  Seriously, I don’t feel bad.  It’s just fabric and I think Speck would love it!  :)

Knitting Resource

Knitting is one of those things I pretty much taught myself so what I do isn’t always exactly what everyone else does.  It works fine for me til I try to read a pattern and then I don’t have a clue what to do.  Thanks to youtube videos, Ravelry and knitting friends, I’ve figured out about everything I really need to know.

The original Principles of Knitting, by June Hiatt, was published in 1988 and had long been out of print.  There was the occasional used copy for sale here and there and I heard sometimes they went for as much as $800.  Last year, I heard that the book was being revised and would be republished “soon”. Reading an old message board, I saw where someone was anxiously awaiting the release of the new updated version which was tentatively scheduled for summer, 2008, then I read that the author was “very, very meticulous” and the release date had been bumped back to 2009, so this new version has been a long time getting here and has been much awaited by knitters. My order had been placed in January, 2011 and it arrived yesterday. According to Amazon, it was released on 2/14/2012 so I’m pretty happy that my copy arrived the same day it was released!  :)   The new book is available here.

Considering that the book is over 700 pages, counting the bibliography, index, etc., it’s a real bargain for $27.  It’s a book I will go to for years and years of knitting reference.  I highly recommend this book to you knitters out there.
