When I went to the local meat market and asked for a fresh ham, the man said “Do you want a fresh smoked ham?” I said no . . just a fresh ham. Nothing done to it. He said “Do you want it cured?” I said no . . just a fresh ham. Nothing done to it. He said “You want a fresh ham . . nothing done to it?” Yep! That’s exactly what I want. Apparently not many folks ask for that so he had to talk to his suppliers and he called the middle of the week and told me he had my ham. I brined it for 24 hours and then stuck it in the smoker.
Left it smoking for a few hours and this is what we’re having for dinner.
Looks like a big old turkey leg, doesn’t it? Nope, it’s a ham with the bone in and you know what the best part is? The broth I’ll get from that big old ham bone!

That’s a lot of ham, gal.
Looks absolutely deeee-lish.
You’re right about that ol’ bone.
hugs
I like to use the bone in a pot of pinto beans…MMMMMM GOOD! Make a pan of cornbread, some fresh tomatoes from the garden.YUMMO!
I’ll stew the bone down with spices and hopefully get about 12 quarts of broth.
And Spike getting the bone!
Oh, no. Speck doesn’t get people food at all .. not even bones. I’ll make broth from the bone.
Ham bone, navy beans and cornbread! Yum, yum!!
Yummmm. Now I’m drooling and its only 9 AM
Okay, you made me hungry now. I have to quit reading blogs and get me a ham sandwich!!!!
Such a funny story. I grew up eating “fresh hams” and know exactly what you mean when you try to ask for something like that and you get kind of a blank stare! Ha!
