Recent Giveaway Gifts

Kelly Ann sent me a picture of the goodies going out to the three who won in the recent giveaway.  Looks like some really fun and useful stuff in there.  Maybe I should have left a comment and maybe I would have won!  :)

Kelly Ann loves the Tucker Trimmer ruler and I’ve never even seen one but I think I might have to find one and try it out.  I’ve seen the swatch buddies advertised lately . . they’re something new and look pretty useful.  The needle nanny is great!  I’ve had one of those — not that one but mine is lost right now.  Looks like a ruler and a package of something . . I’m not even going to guess what’s in that package but it kinda looks like . . no . . that’s not quilt related . . what am I talking about?  Beats me . . I shouldn’t even have mentioned it . . shouldn’t even have thought about it!  Remind me to tell you about the phone call my husband got this weekend!

Anyway  . . looks like fantastic gift bags should be headed your way — Becky, Crystal and Erin.  They went out in today’s mail.

Would one of you please let me know what’s in that package?  :)

And, a huge thank you to Kelly Ann for putting together the packages for me.

Nine Patch Top

Yesterday I finished this little nine patch top except for the borders.

A friend who does fantastic hand applique has offered to do some applique on it . . an owl, of course, so I sent it off to her today.  I was waiting to be sure the baby was going to be a girl, as she was first told.  Then she told me that she’d rather it be gender neutral so that any future babies can use it too.  She wanted greens, tans, golds . . so I made it and it’s so cute and it’s going to be even cuter with the applique added.

When I get it back, I’ll add borders and quilt it and get it delivered . . though I know it will be long after the baby is born!

Solar Cooking Article

A blog reader sent me the link to an article from the Austin newspaper about solar cooking.  Like I’ve said before, I know they’re not for everyone — especially those of you who live where there’s not enough sun, but if you have just an inkling of desire for one and  you live where it will work, I highly recommend them.  I’m still so thrilled with the one we got.

We’re grilling steak tonight so the potatoes just went into the solar oven and they’ll be wonderfully tender and moist by the time the steaks are ready for dinner.  They tell me it isn’t easy to burn anything in there and if I put them in plenty early, I don’t have to hope they’ll be done.  I washed them, then stuck them in a round Granite Ware cake pan and covered it with a Granite Ware pie pan.  It’s best to cover things to keep the steam from escaping and fogging up the glass, thus blocking the heat.  And, we’re not supposed to use foil because it’s reflective and it blocks the heat.  So, they’re in the cake pan unwrapped, and covered with the pie pan and for dinner, we’ll have yummy baked potatoes that required no fuel or costly energy to make . . just harnessed the sun’s rays for free.

I think a big part of why I love it is because it makes me feel like there’s something good coming from this miserable heat!

This morning I’ve cut okra, canned okra (10 pints), made bread, cleaned house (minimally . . just enough for Vince to notice that I did some housework), washed two loads of clothes, cleaned the globes on the four ceiling fans on the porch, got the potatoes in the solar oven and now . . I’m going to sew.

Design Wall Monday – August 6, 2012

Take a look at my design wall! If I could sew every day like I sewed yesterday, I’d get so much done!  These are my Christmas Town Sampler blocks.

That’s all the blocks so far except the border blocks.  I have two more Manor House border blocks to make and they’re almost done and then the 8 Business District border blocks, which I’m going to try to get done today, and I’ll be all caught up.  This is going to be such a fun quilt.
