Some time during the days before Christmas, my husband dragged me out of the house . . kicking and screaming, as I so often do when I have to go shopping with him. One of the stops was Wal-Mart and I told him I would ride with him but I was not getting out of the car. I took along my knitting but . . as you might imagine, Vince stayed in Wal-Mart much longer than I expected and I got tired of knitting and began doodling. I came up with a list of quilts I’d like to get done in 2013.
Denise’s birds aren’t on there but I’m going to try to keep up with her on that too and you know there will be new quilts I wish to do also. Back to Square One Mystery isn’t on the list but of course, that’s going to get done in 2013.
There are 12 quilts on list. One, Vince’s Texas Quilt, is done except for quilting and binding. Addie’s Owl Quilt needs borders and quilting. Five of the quilts are not started yet. That means five are at various stages of completion. I can do it if I don’t get sidetracked with too many new projects.
As far as knitting, I may just stick with socks in 2013. It doesn’t get cold enough here to justify sweaters or many scarves. I can make a few scarves, or cowls for gifts for friends in colder climates but mostly for me, it’s going to be socks in 2013. I’m seriously thinking about not doing Camp Loopy this summer. I’m so busy with the garden during the summer and the projects are bigger than socks and it takes forever for me to knit them and I only have a month and I feel like I should be knitting when I’m working in the garden, and I feel like I should be in the garden when I’m knitting and there’s no time for sewing . . so, while I may change my mind, as of now I’m thinking I won’t be doing Camp Loopy.
I never seem to get tired of knitting socks. They’re quite portable. They make great gifts. Even the wool socks aren’t scratchy or overly hot here but I don’t wear socks much in the summer.
Anyone else have any goals set for quilting or other hobbies in the coming year?

Starting to frame a few in my head -but nothing down on paper yet. I have 4 UFO’s that have been lingering – close to finishing – that I really want to get done this year… for ME! I finished the flimsy on one yesterday -so I am well on my way.
Having joined the 13 in 2013 group this year, I’ve got a list of projects to knit. Most of them are sweaters and shawls as I’m finding either it’s getting colder here in the winters, or I’m getting older and feeling it more. I have decided not to dwell on discerning which of those two options it is! LOL
My quilting this year will include starting at the outside edge of the closet that is full of my own tops to quilt, and quilting one a month.
That may not seem like much, but with working for DH in the trucking company now, and longarming for customers on the side, and the garden and the rabbits and the chickens and the dogs and the landscaping and my spinning wheel….. somehow it all tends to add up!
Oh and it’s in the 40′s here today with heavy rains, definitely a sweater, wool socks, and possibly shawl on top type of day! ;>)
It’s going to be in the 50′s here today but the low last night was in the low 20′s and it felt like 6 when I woke up so I’m taking that leap and saying I’m too old for all this cold weather!
I’m in my jammies for most of the day today. You;ve heard of boxing day? well I’m declareing JAMMIE DAY!
I don’t have PLANS for the new yr. I was never good at making resolutions either. but I have 3 quilts that I need to complete, an around the world quilt for a girl who is on her 2nd deployment in Afgan this time, a quilt for DD’s wedding in July. (1/2 pieced) and Bonnie ‘s Mystery quilt Easy Street. I also have 4 wild Women grandchildren (10&5) who need new quilts. I have the fabrics but not the patterns.
JAMMIE DAY sounds like an excellent idea!!
Really — especially since I haven’t found the time (or desire) to get out of mine.
I agree!! I have a cold so it is a great day for “Jammie Day”!!
Jammie day – sounds delightful!
Only thing is – the LAST time I tried to do Jammie day (I try at least once every 2 weeks), my son and his bride showed up, the doorbell rang MANY times with various people wanting to inform me of what was going on in the neighborhood – and things went downhill from there!
For me, at least, I think that declaring Jammie day is akin to declaring open house to the city I live in and to all my relatives!
It just so happens that I do have a few quilting plans for 2013. I REALLY, REALLY want to get Bonnie Hunter’s Orca Bay & Jamestown landing finished. I want to do the New Year’s day QOV Sit ‘n Sew (gonna cut some strips today). My niece is having twin girls, due Apr. 8, that I want to make quilts for. My son & daughter-in-law are moved into their newly, remodeled house and want a quilt to match the new bedroom. My younger granddaughter wants a quilt in her room’s colors–orange, teal & lime green! I host Quilt Club in Jan. & thought I’d get the group started on my new summer quilt–strip quilted blocks out of 30′s fabrics with white centers. I think that should keep me busy for the year. If not, there’s also three donation tops waiting to be quilted & bound, plus at least three of my own tops to be quilted & bound also.
I think I have my UFOs lined up. Wedding quilt for grandson, Christmas block swap quilt, Embroidered antique sewing machine blocks wall hanging, Peace quilt for granddaughter, Razorback quilt for son Mark,Easter quilt for self, scrappy quilt for self, Halloween quilt for self, maybe….Little Susan wall hanging for self, get “all through the year lap quilt top quilted, finished “Epi” quilt top quilted and Strawberry Fields Forever quilt top quilted. There will projects inbetween and I don’t want to start too many new projects this new year. I want to limit myself to 3 for 2013. We’ll see how that goes!
I don’t see Bact to Square One on that list!
It’s in the paragraph below the list. It’s definitely getting done!
Top on the list,, organize quilt room after our move. THEN I can start. My granddaughter switches colors this year ( purple) so she’ll need a new and more grown up quilt for her room,, request for a “huge” quilt to snuggle under to watch hockey as the rinks are frigid–the whole family wants to be covered!, They went to the Olympics last summer and want a UK quilt (I have the fabric) and lastly, I want a new quilt for my new house mostly with teals in it. Organize in January and then I’m off and running. And yes, Judy, I will ger the patriotic quilt finished this year as promised to myself.
For Christmas, I made 10 rag lap quilts for grandchildren, great nieces & nephews. They actually seemed quite pleased!
Earlier in the year i completed a Queen sized Bento Box & a large pieced crib quilt. In 2013, my quilts will be larger & fewer, all pieced: A queen size for my son’s oldest, @70×82 for his youngest ( both started and due late March); twin sets for each of his girls; finish a70x70 throw for him. I’ve started a french braid christmas tree skirt ( not completed yet) so that will be my son’s birthday present. Oh & throw sized Bonnie Hunter Easy street. I am in two block of the month’s and want to complete those by the end of the year.
As far as knitting: Cowls, hats or mittens for the 10 little ones, & one highschooler as well as for two college aged grandchildren,; plus son, DIL ( gave her a scalene for Christmas) and step daughter’s beau, and complete the beaded shawl for my step-daughter.
For me: new socks. Phew, a lot, especially since i am slow as dirt. But i do love sewing & knitting! I expect to work more this year as well as take more photos so i can blog more often. Looking forward to 2013… And expect to join in your weekly stash report & what’s on your needles. I hope joining those will improve my production… Especially the completion ratio! Yhanks for all you do Judy!
I love reading everyones goals , love reading others set goals for themselves as some of my non quilting friends think I am crazy making my list ,,but list is how I accomplish things
I have always loved making tops then move on so I have lots of UFO in my tote..I know there is 50 for sure and many stack up not able to fit inside.. so my thoughts are to
try to do one a month.. and limit myself to not more than
6 new quilt, impossible I know as I love mysteries I love new patterns ideas , lets face it I love quilting peroid.. I also
love to crochet and I have 3 aftgans in various stages I always make ripple design 50 x 72 would be my smallest so I would like to finish those. also.. plus I know I have a wedding quilt to make and 3 baby quilts so the list goes on and on put at least I am moving forward >>
1] 6 FQs from my quilting bee Secret Sister need to be made up into SOMETHING
2] Finish THREE UFOs into at least three neonatal quilts by the March quilt meeting when they will be collected
3] Finish Christmas quilt by next December
4] Finish/dispose of/repurpose HALF of the UFOs in the cupboard
I plan o setting up my “new to me” short arm that my oldest son got for me free of charge. I have 4 tops that are ready to load up. My youngest son and my husband got me an old Frister & Rossman hand crank sewing machine that I want to learn all I can about it as well as sewing on it.
I’ve been giving 2013 a lot of thought. My DH is eligible for retirement at the end of January, so it’s something we’re considering–it’ll mean full time ministry which involves me a lot. I’m trying to figure where my quilting and crafting and stitching will fit into it all. I really want to clear out my UFOs … and work on a crazy quilt … and work monthly on Christmas gifts so I don’t have to panic and waste money on store-bought gifts in December when I realize I can’t pull it all together in time. LOL! Yeah, I’ve given 2013 a little thought.
I have been thinking a lot about 2013 and my goals. I am making my first “resolution” list in years. As far as my quilting goals go I need to spend time with my new “Tin Lizzie” sitdown machine. I am a “completer” so I don’t have a backlog of tops but I do have the Bonnie Hunter “Holy Toledo” top that I have been piecing since April ready to sew borders on and quilt in January. I am going to participate in the Back to Square One Mystery with Judy (my first Medallion Quilt), Also I am in for Denise’s Stitchin with JustQuiltin and Strictly for the birds. I have never done a “Bird” quilt either. I have my “Quilt Camp” with my college roommate coming up Jan 12-22. We will go to my lakehouse and sew our brains out, eat great food , watch old movies, and yack till the wee hours in the morning. It was postponed from July when we normally meet. At that time my husband was fighting hard in his battle with cancer which he lost in August. So my life in 2013 will be distinctly different (I miss him so much!!). I am trying to make plans to keep me busy. We will resume our July quilt camp too. I am prayerfully considering some sort of “Quilt Ministry” at my church. Jeffrey of course had quilts from me during his illness but also received a quilt from a “Prayers and Squares” quilt ministry from my roommates’ church in WV.
He loved his quilts so much we put them on the alter during his memorial service. I would like to share that comfort with others in need. So far that’s about it….lots to do…a chance to give back and the wonderful comfort of friends in my life to help me on the journey.
Uh – Judy – I know I probably need a refresher in Counting 101 – but I only counted 10 quilts – NOT 12! (unless 2 are surprise packages!!!!)
I’ve had my list of 12 WIPs (UFOs) on my blog for quite a while – still tentative – at least until Dec 31 midnight!
Yep, you need a refresher in Counting 101!
Two of them have two listed – 2 Comfort & Joy quilts and a cowgirl and cowboy quilt.
After all of the grandkids leave, I plan to clean house, a mini-spring cleaning. Then spend the rest of the winter on expanding my knowledge and experience on my hobbies. I plan to devote January to
practicing on my longarm as many hours and days possible to improve my techniques. And hopefully quilt the 20+ tops in my stash plus any charity tops that need quilted for guild. In February, I plan to focus on re-learning my machine embroidery software because I seem to have forgotten most of what I learned three years ago. March is EQ7 month because I’ve had little time to use it since purchasing it. That should take me to April, when its time to work on the flower beds.
Socks and baby sweaters are on my knitting list, catching up on swap blocks, the MOH Challenge quilt on TQP, and to at least make progress on my numerous UFOs….that’s my plan for 2013. Baby stuff knits up as quickly as socks!
Oh my, there isn’t room enough to list all I hope to get done this year. Have a stack of tops and backs that I want to get layered and quilted. Have 2 quilts ready to quilt, 3 challenges that need completion, plus several items for state meeting next summer. Oh MY!! Just plan on keeping plugging away and hope lots get finished. Almost forgot my 2 P.I.G.S projects need finished too. (projects in grocery sacks) or unfinished objects. Sigh–maybe I will get snowed in for a month.
2013 already!!!! 70 this summer and married 50 years too! Where does the time go?
For the coming year:
1. organize sewing rooms, get rid of what not wanted
2. list projects I want to do (problem is I like to do toooo many things
3. learn to knit socks( got the yarn, got the book and patterns, got the needles-all four of them-yikes
Now I need the brain matter to use the needles-I seem to be all thumbs!
4. Finish the quilts I have not finished- one or two for our guild quilt show in April
5. Figure out how to get everything I want, and how to store it in the fifth-wheel trailer!!
I want to make your Orange Dream quilt. I’ve been collecting orange fabrics and I believe I have enough now.
