The “What’s Cooking?” posts really doesn’t start til next week but why not get in a little practice week here? For those who didn’t read the post where the “What’s Cooking?” Challenge was outlined, here’s how it works: Each Wednesday, there will be a new “ingredient” or two (or three) posted and if you want to participate, you need to make a dish using those ingredients and at some point in the week, post pictures of your dish, along with your recipe or a link if it’s a recipe from the internet. If it’s a published recipe and you don’t feel comfortable copying someone else’s recipe, simply tell us where you found the recipe and maybe a little about the recipe. Let’s all be aware of and respect copyright . . though I understand that recipes are somewhat different.
On the following Wednesday, when the “focus ingredients” are posted for the following week, there will be a link box where you can link up with your blog post. Next Wednesday I will post the “What’s Cooking?” ingredients, along with a link box where you will link to your post showing what you mad with this week’s ingredients. Make sense?
Say an ingredient is:
Sweet Potatoes
And that’s what we’ll use for our practice week but there will be a new ingredient each week. Get creative . . don’t tell us you fixed baked sweet potatoes!

“Sweet potatoes”….I/we just finished off a fabulous recipe that I first had at SIL’s at Thanksgiving! There is nothing left to take a photo of but will figure out something! I must have missed your first announcement but this is a great idea!!! CanNOT wait………Blessings (and your granddaughter is a delight!!! Those photos are exquisite!)
First announcement is under group projects at the top.
Are you going to post a linkup to our blogs? (I have a recipe in mind – first time trying it out – looks good!) that way we can put pix there as well as recipe – or resource. Oh – and mine is good not only with fresh sweet potatoes – but also leftover ones!
Yep .. says so in the post!
hmmm – I REALLY need to go learn my ABCs – all this time and I didn’t realize my name was mispelled! Good Grief!
Will have to sit this round out… DH will not even taste a Sweet Potato… And i cook nothing, unless we both are going to eat it… too much wasted food for just me!
Made sweet potato casserole on for dinner on Christmas Eve then ate the leftovers for Christmas Dinner so they are gone. Two times of anything is enough though we do love it!
not really a ‘recipe’, just a simple helpful hint– when making any sweet potato dish, sprinkle on a dash of cinnamon sugar to finish it off. On a whim i tried that when microwaving my canned yams and it made a HUGE difference. Now they’re not just yams, they’re TASTY yams.
What a perfect ingredient to start off with! I’ve been wanting to try a favorite squash soup substituting sweet potatoes, and now I have the perfect incentive to try it. If you don’t hear any more about this, you can safely assume it was a flop! I think it’s going to work though…
I love sweet potatoes, my husband not so much – although he has surprised me on occasion. A local restaurant, before they went out of business, had great rolls or biscuits neither my husband or I can remember which – but he has asked for them. Both my sister and I have attempted to make them. They are good rolls, but lose the sweet potato flavor. He even suggested that I make a sweet potato pie for Friday’s get-together, but I have my hands full with the rest of the food and then his birthday cake. Perhaps New Year’s Day?…..
Same as Pam — I adore sweet potatoes, but Todd, not so much–until I fixed them broiled … now they’re a favorite! I think we’ll have ‘em this week, just so I can play!
Is there any way I can play without having a blog….it sound like a fun thing to do…..would love to play……love your blog….
I coincidentally made sweet potatoes today …
Judy
I’ve got to tell you this. The prime rib was wonderful and the recipe from the site was a hit. My dear hubby , son in law and granddaughter loved ever morsel of it. So thanks for the idea I’ll do it again for sure.
I don’t have a blog. Sugar on sweet potatoes repels me. I make “stew” with pork and sweet potatoes. No real recipe. Just brown the pork and add any thing you like in stew. Substitute sweet potatoes for white potatoes.
We were invited to a friends for dinner last night and I had sweet potatoes for the first time in my life. They were delicious. All I can say is that there was maple syrup, butter and ground pecans involved. Very yummy!!!
Hi Judy,
Okey-dokey, I did my sweet potato recipe
Looking forward to the linky and the next challenge! Are you going to have a badge/button for us to use on our blogs?

Sweet Potato “Fries” with dipping sauce from the cookbook
PLENTY are delicious! See:http://www.eating-for-england.com/potato-wedges-lemongrass-creme/
Roast long fingers of washed, not peeled Sw. Pot., toss w olive oil, ground coriander, and 3/4 tsp salt. Dipping sauce: if you cannot find creme fraiche, use sour cream or thick yogurt. If you can’t find lemon grass, add a bit of lemon zest. Eat warm or at room temp. Make great finger food for parties! Enjoy!
Don’t have a blog but I’ll be following along. My hint for sweet pots is to bake then freeze. It’s just the two of us now so I buy small size pots, one or two serving size. Got them last week for .33 lb. Buy a bunch, prick with a fork and bake them all at the same time on a cookie sheet until oozing. Let cool totally then wrap in foil and freeze. I stick the wrapped pots in large zip lock bags so they don’t get lost. When ready to use simply take out the number you need, thaw and microwave for a min or two until hot. This is really great in the summer when you don’t want the kitchen heted up from the oven.
Last week when I had a quart of ham and bean soup pot liqour with hardly any solids left I diced up a sweet potato to cook in it and used up every drop that way. That sweet potato was so big I still had half of it to use the next evening. I diced it and with a bag of brussel sprouts, a couple Tblsp butter and water steamed it up in a skillet, adding sliced up sausages in the last minutes to heat them.
Our meals both evenings were so good I want to do it all intentionally again.
