Sitting and Sewing on a QOV

Last night after dinner I came back to the sewing room, thinking I’d ring in the new year out here but before I ever started sewing, a skunk must’ve walked by my back door and sprayed.  I have never been up close and personal with a skunk but my eyes were watering and my throat was burning.  I was thinking the smell would go away since I didn’t have the heater on, or anything drawing outside air inside but within five minutes, I knew I couldn’t stay out here long and went back to the house.  I ended up taking a long shower and a Benadryl and was in bed early!

This morning I dreaded coming into the sewing room for fear that it still smelled bad out here.  In fact, I was a wimp and asked Vince to come over here and get the 20 pound ham out of the fridge and . . “While you’re there, will you notice if it still smells in there?”  He did it smelled .. but it’s my Bath  & Body Works Wall Flower plugins that he detests.  I guess he’d rather smell a skunk!

Anyway, I’m now back in the sewing room.  I’m trying to make 3 quilts using the pattern I shared.  So far, I have 9 strip sets in red and 9 strip sets in blue sewn, and all the “frames” cut out.

QOV S&S Strips & Frames

Anyone else sitting and sewing this New Year’s Day?  You know what they say . . whatever you’re doing on New Year’s is what you’ll be doing all year long!  :)

I just put the first block of the next section of the Stars and Stripes on my design wall.. it was a doozy…

  2. 2

One set of blocks just about completed.

I just shortened a tablecloth – I found one on a super clearance that was about 20 inches longer than my table requires, but it had some decorative stitching on all the edges, so I had to shorten it and reattach the decorative end. I think I might make a tote from the leftovers. Hoping to get back up and start piecing some blocks together to finish a top, but playing Wii with the 7 year old is tempting, too!

I have not heard that saying before but it would be great I am working on a bit of a backlog of charity quilts to clear some room for new things. Thanks for sharing this pattern I really like it. Joanne

Just put together the fabric choices for two Crazy Quilt Journal blocks and one Bead Journal Project piece. Getting ready to do some blackwork embroidery to enter in next summer’s fair. Hope this bodes well for my stitch in’ plans!

Happy New Year, Judy. May the skunks be as put off by your air freshened as Vince is!

I’m just taking a quick break from my QOV to grab a quick lunch. Thanks for sharing your pattern…I’m enjoying making it! I’ve got my strip sets sewn and cut into 6.5 inch squares. I’ve also got all my frames cut out. I’ll post some pictures on my blog later on. http://crazy4red.blogspot.com/ Happy New Year!

Yes, I am sewing away. Finished up a mystery quilt from Planet Patchwork this morning. Now it is all red, white and blue thanks to you!

I did manage to make 6 blocks before I had to rejoin the husband and puppy. It felt good to sew.

  12. 12

I got a bit of a late start, but I’ve got all my strips cut for the QOV and I’m about to sit down and start sewing. I’m just making a simple on-point nine patch with alternating blocks. I should take a little break and take the dog to play ball. That will mean I’ll get to sew without his head in my lap, looking at me with those sad eyes. We’ll see how far I get!

We’re in Colorado visiting the kids. I didn’t bring any sewing with me – I’ve taken it for a ride too many times. I did bring some knitting and a few good books. Tomorrow it’s a visit to the Loopy Ewe. My daughter gave me a gift certificate for Christmas and it’s burning a hole in my pocket!

  14. 15

I cut out the fabrics last week, made the red blocks on Sunday, the blue blocks on Monday and got the top assembled today.

I’ve been quilting, may switch to some knitting and I’m not sure it’s a good thing that I just had a chocolate chip coookie if I’m destined to do that for the rest of the year! :-)

  16. 20

I did a little hand embroidery on a tablecloth I started in 2011 hoping to finish in 2013. I may go slow but hopefully never give up. Happy new year.PS received a pair of hand knitted bed socks. Maybe I will learn how to make a pair to pass on to some one special this year.

We’re over run with skunks…and I live in a heavily populated area. *sigh* The best thing I’ve found to remove the smell is Summer’s Eve douche (can you believe it?) This website has some helpful facts, too -

I wish I could find a way from discouraging the little darlings from visiting!

I’ve been working on a QOV. I started it one day when sewing with friends. Over the holiday I haven’t sewn, I’ve knitted so it was good to sew. I got the pineapple blocks sashed and have even got a good start on the borders – I am mitring them so I have been very careful. It felt good to know that other people were out there sewing on QOV’s and it gave me the motivation to work on the dreaded mitres.

  19. 23

I spent money on fabric … and money on groceries … which seems about par for the course for my last several years. LOL! :)

  20. 24

Me Me Me Me – I have the design wall almost full – I am so excited – I never get that much sewing done in a day!!!!

  21. 25

That was my plan. However, about 5 am, I was awakened by my new roommate – a raccoon moving into the attic and making himself comfortable. It took most of the day to get him out … I hope.

Well, I must have misread the instructions, because I did r/w/b in each block! Oh well, I’ve come too far to turn back now! I’ve got all 35 blocks started, have 6 with the blue border on. All the rest of the block borders & outer borders are ready to sew on. Before I got started on QOV, I finished a small wsholecloth quilt on the longarm. Came out pretty cool too! Oh! DH interrupted me also by coming in to install the 8 foot loft over my longarm, so had to stop & help him. Still have to put my lights back up over the longarm, but that won’t take long.

EEEW skunk smell is awful, you are lucky it didn’t sink into your fabrics etc. Didn’t get to sew today so am still thinking about it.

  24. 28

Been an awesome couple of days, I am practicing my applique skills on a quilt quilt I put together Sunday evening, had a huuuge lunch with the gift card my boss gave me for Ruby Tuesday. (We opted for cabbage and beans yesterday.)
After snow 12″ Christmas day, sleet 2 days later, rain all day yesterday, and gloominess to
day I have found all this indoor time heavenly, and feel recharged for 3 days of work ahead.
On the skunk, you are so lucky. Hottest day of the year this August my Sheltie rubbed my whole house with his body, I was showering, and chemo has killed the hubby smeller so he did a fine job before I got out. Windows open, washing and scrubbing everything in the house the next day, had a meeting at work that day so had to delay cleanup but afterward meeting someone mentions to me that another workers hair permanent is strong, at that point I am horrified. I smelled like skunk too even though I never went near dog.

Well, I am sitting anyway. My fingers are still numb so there is no sewing in my immediate future. I will live vicariously through you!

  26. 30

Oh Judy I hope what I did today I do not do everyday LOL We went to a polka dance with 3 couples that we been friends with for 45 plus years.. but I am going down
now to start something sewing related.. LOL Skunk is nothing to mess with.. they smell so BAD

    Tammie Stephens says:

My first QOV finished. I used your pattern and it was sew simple… Thanks for making so few “matching” seams it made it possible to complete it today. I didn’t have enough red/white/blues (very hard to believe) so I used earth tones, green/rust/browns/beiges. I hope that’s ok. So here’s a question… What do I do with the top? The QOV site says “request a long armer”. But how will I get it back to send to the person who is collecting them? And do I send backing fabric and/or batting with the quilt top?

  28. 32

Got mine finished around 6:15. Here’s the picture: http://quiltinlibrarylady.blogspot.com/2013/01/new-years-day-qov-sit-n-sew.html

Are you doing another scrappy quilt? Two in a row??

  31. 35

Omg, I sure hope that saying isn’t true—I’m cleaning.

Just got my pattern for Comfort and Joy, Love it! Which section are you starting with? I am going to try and follow along.. Thanks for answering.

  34. 38

I had a friend come over for a “Sew Day” and while she finished a table runner, I loaded my son’s quilt top on the long arm and started quilting it this afternoon. Awesome way to bring in the New Year!
