Capper’s Farmer Magazine

It isn’t real often that I’m totally enamored with a non-quilting magazine.  There are quite a few that I like and will pick up when I see them IF they have several articles that excite me.  But, today I received the Sprin, 2013 issue of Capper’s Farmer magazine.

This is the first time I’ve seen this magazine, which is published by the same folks who publish Grit, which I also like.

Articles in this issue include Living Off the Land, Savory Pies, Woodstove Cookery and . . there’s an article in this issue by me.

For those of you who like living in the country, or would like to live in the country, I think you would LOVE this magazine.

January, 2013 Quiltathon Day 2

Did anyone notice that I’ve had a crazy day?  What is it about the Quiltathon that causes me to get nothing accomplished?  I sit in my sewing room and sew non-stop . . until a scheduled Quiltathon.

I had talked to a lady earlier in the week who was looking for a longarm and I told her she could come by and play on my Millennium.  She lives a couple of hours away and called this morning to tell me they would be passing by here about 1.  I had already told my neighbor I’d go to the youth fair with her to look at all the judged goodies.  Then I realized . . what if the folks coming to look at the longarm want to go to the restroom?  That means I needed to do some super quick cleaning in the house.  So, I cleaned house, I went to the youth fair, I showed the lady how the longarm works and then I decided I needed a few things from Kroger so I ran back to town.

Our high today was near 75º so I worked in the garden a bit — dug some carrots and beets, cut some mustard greens for us and cut some with freeze damage for the chickens.  Tomorrow or high will be in the low 50′s and then the nights are dipping back into the 20′s.

There’s never that much activity going on around here.  I’m going to sew more after dinner.

Please . . someone tell me that you’re getting a lot done!

On The Needles – January 11, 2013

Yes, I forgot!  Please share a link to what’s on your needles.  I’ll share, again, the picture of the socks I completed this week.  Nothing new is on my needles yet.  Maybe the mail lady will bring yarn today.

A Lot of Backing

This may be something I regret but for the three QOVs that I’m working on, I was thinking . . why not piece the backings into one BIG backing, load it and do one quilt after another without having to load each individual backing.  Pretty smart, huh?  I don’t know . . ask me later.

My only real concern (and I’m not really that concerned) is that once I roll three quilts on the takeup roller, it may take up too much space in the throat.  I don’t think I’ll have any problems doing two quilts and if I have to cut the backing and then re-attach one end to the leader to do the third quilt, I’ve still saved time.

Those quilts are 64″ x 84″ so I needed about 92″ in length and I figured I needed 5 widths to be wide enough for three quilts (3 x 64 = 192) and 5 x 40 = 200″.  After cutting off the selvage, and making the seam, I do have 40″ on each width.

Are you thinking what I’m thinking?  Stash Report!  Yay!  5 x 92″ = 460 = about 12.75 yards.  Pretty good, huh?
