Remember a while back when I was talking about making steel cut oats? A friend had called and was telling me about seeing oatmeal “pucks” at a store . . Trader Joe’s I think she said. She bought some and was telling me how nice it is to open one . . a pre-cooked little disk of steel cut oats, pop them in the microwave and have fresh oatmeal. I said to myself . . I can do that!
I set about to cook massive amounts of steel cut oatmeal. To some I added cinnamon and cooked apples. I put the cooked oatmeal into muffin tins.
Once it was frozen, I dumped them, wrapped the little single serving shapes in plastic wrap.
Then I put those in a zipper freezer bag.
One morning last week when Speck had to be at the vet early, and the morning was a bit rushed, I grabbed myself a frozen oatmeal.
Using the same plastic wrap that the oatmeal was wrapped in, I covered a bowl containing the frozen oatmeal and microwaved it. There! I knew some day I’d find a use for the microwave!
A few blueberries, sliced strawberries, a little honey and some milk were added and I had a nice, healthy breakfast .. along with a not so healthy Dr. Pepper. Yum!
That is so easy!
- Cook the oatmeal
- Place serving sizes in muffin pans (sprayed with cooking spray if desired)
- Freeze
- Dump from the muffin pan once they’re frozen solid
- Either wrap in individual plastic wrap or toss them into a freezer bag “naked”.
- When you want one to eat, take it out, microwave it. Add whatever toppings you like.
Simple!!

Well hot dang! If that isn’t clever! Never thought about freezing cooked steel cut oats – clever girl!
That is exactly what I was thinking as I read the post…she is so CLEVER………………
This is a great idea! I have to tell you that I LOVE visiting your blog. One thing that I loved as a kid was when my grandma and then as I became a teenager my aunt would have afternoon coffee with their neighbors and swap recipes, crochet and sewing patterns and chat about the kids. Neighborhoods have seemed to disappear in most towns now but your blog has given me a virtual one. Thank you!

Great idea – I usually cook up a large pot full and keep it in the refrigerator but sometimes get tired of eating it before it is gone.
I love the idea, living alone making the real oatmeal always makes to much, this will work.
You could skip a step and put the plastic wrap or baggie in the muffin tray before adding the cooked oatmeal. That way all you have to do after they are frozen is pop them out and store them in a big bag. I just got a huge bag of quick cooking steel cut oats at Costco, now I know what to do with them. I like the fresh fruit add-ins too.
I think it would take more time to get the plastic wrap into the muffin tin than it does to dump the pucks and wrap them. But, as always, you can do it any way you like. There’s no wrong or right way.
That’s our Judy, oatmeal and Dr. Pepper!
Dang thta is a good idea! Here I have been just putting a serving in a ziplock baggier. They don’t store easily, and the “pucks” would!
I was reading along, thinking “oh, now this is COOL!” Then, I read the next sentence “…along with a not so healthy Dr. Pepper,” and about busted a gut with a laugh! I love that you share this stuff with all of us – both the wonderful ideas for living our busy lives, and the other little private things about you that help us feel like we’ve known you for many years.
Thanks for the smiles you cause – today & every day, Judy!

Brilliant idea! I’ll have to try that next time. For how long do you microwave them?
Wow that’s a great idea! I will give this one a try. Loving this idea.
ooh – good idea. I’ve not done that with oatmeal, but I have with brown rice – since it takes so long to cook. I freeze them in the silicone muffin tins so they are easy to pop out and mix them with canned or frozen soup for my lunch at work. When my son was a baby, he got them as part of his early foods.
THANK YOU JUDY!!!! We have steel cut oatmeal every week day morning in the winter, but on the weekend we often forget to set the crockpot up. It’s once to have eggs once in a while, but lots of time I still would love my oatmeal. This will solve lots of Sunday mornings of toast and peanut butter…. Thanks again!
I’m doing this! Thanks for the great idea!
