Saturday in the Garden

The first few warm days after winter are rough on old folks.  We spent the entire day working and tomorrow, probably neither one of us will be able to move a muscle.

Vince spent a little while this morning working on the new water line on the side of the house, then he tilled up one side of the garden and made some trenches for me to plant a few things.  Then he moved the grapes that were in the garden and tilled up that area. Bless his heart . . then he dug the holes for the new apricot trees.  I planted about 400 onions . . don’t ask me why . . and then I planted four packs of sweet peas.  Then I dug some carrots for a neighbor while she picked some chard and lettuce.  Then another neighbor came over and I dug some carrots and picked some lettuce for her.

You know what’s funny?  In the past when I’ve lived in neighborhoods, I’ve never had neighbors who visit.  Here, my one neighbor that I see often lives over half a mile from my house.  Today, she came over three times!  I love hearing her little RTV coming down my driveway.  First they came over because they had gone to town and had picked up our apricot trees.  The second time she came over was to bring an onion planting gizmo that makes holes in the ground for planting my 400 onions.  She had just finished planting 600 onions . . don’t ask me why!  And, she was making a cake and needed whipping cream and neither of us had any but I thought she could use Half & Half will a little sour cream.  She did and that worked and the third time she came over was to bring cake and home grown peaches!

Cake & Peaches

And, I forgot that today Vince also cut down a bunch of cedar trees and piled them up to dry for a few days so he can chip them.

Vince Working

Tomorrow . . hopefully we will not work quite so hard but it is very nice to have accomplished so much today.

I love when we have days like that….you just work and work….and go to bed tired but happy. probably about 30 more days for us here before it’s warm enough. i know you are having fun. i’m jealous. LOL

Great neighbors are the best! I can’t believe you spent one of your last days with cable outside ;) hope you are both able,to move around well tomorrow – Advil before you go to bed might help (not that you asked) :)

What kind of gizmo do you use to plant onions???

It was something the neighbor had made many years ago. It was a steel plate with “pegs”. We stepped on it and it poked evenly spaced holes in the ground.

Kinda gives you a feeling for how life was in small communities when we were little. And improvisation!

I need a nap just reading about what you accomplished!!!
Not sure I could deal with that many onions though–Envy you being able to be in the garden already. Minimum of 6-8 weeks before I can plant much outdoors.

“Old folks”….ha! You guys get more (worthwhile) tasks completed in a morning than most of today’s “kids” even think about!!!!! LOL!

I’m sitting here watching the snow fall, and reading about “the first few warm days after winter”. These are the times I wish I lived in the south. We’ll have plenty of warm days in April & May, but planting will still have to wait. I love reading about what you guys are up to – whether it’s planting while I’m freezing, getting rid of TV, or spotting wild boars in town :)

I think I love these days so much because I know what’s in store for us in July and August. Every area has the good and the bad and we have to savor the good so the bad doesn’t get the best of us.

Brings back lots of childhood memories, except it was the month of March that we would start working in the garden. After all peas had to be planted on St. Patty’s day! I can’t say I miss the work but it was always worth it with the fresh produce and fruit. Even after getting married and we started moving around we always had Farmer’s markets we would go too, here forget it. They were the next best thing.

best thing to do is get out and work hard again for those sore muscles…life is good isn’t it? i love texas and the people…let me rephrase that…i love texas, except for the snakes, the mesquites, the cedars and most of the cactus and i love the people…

Vince will be happy to go back to work on Monday to rest up from the weekend. Still, it’s always good to get outside and do things again after the winter. We’re not quite there yet.

I just love it when it is nice outside and being productive! The onion planting thing sounds interesting – I am learning more and more about gardening over the internet, LOL! Just think – while you might be sore from gardening, those in the NE are going to be sore from… snow shoveling! I like the story of when Vince & Chad had to WALK to get the snow shovel – too funny. I think gardening has to be so much more rewarding than snow shoveling! Cheers! Evelyn

I keep wondering where are you that it is already Spring. So I went to look. When I lived in Southern California Spring generally arrived in a flurry of flowers at the beginning of February. I guess your part of Texas is like that too.

I’m in the snow belt now, and I miss the early Spring. Four more weeks and, if we are lucky, it will be Spring here too.
