This was a funny comment on the post when Vince was out working on the trench for the water pipe. I’m not sure if you go back and read the comments but this one was worth sharing. A reader’s husband, who terribly dislikes oatmeal, was reading my Oatmeal Puck post and was completely turned off by my efforts. When he saw the picture of Vince out digging, the husband said “I know exactly what he’s doing! He’s digging a big hole to bury all that oatmeal!”
No, sir! He was NOT digging a hole to bury the oatmeal!
These are so handy! I’m loving having them in the freezer. This morning I had one with blackberries. They’re just the right amount, very quick to fix and there’s no cleanup!
If you like steel cut oats and haven’t tried this yet but thought about doing it when you first saw my post about this, I’m recommending you do it! You’ll thank me!

I make the steel cut oats for my hubby. I made some and put it in the muffin pans. LOVE IT! So easy in the morning to fix his breakfast.
Thanks for the muffin pan suggestion!
we love steel cut oats but they take so long! i’ll have to try this. thanks, judy!
I am going to try it too – I like steel cut oats. I think they come out best if you soak them in a little water overnight and even then – they still take time to cook. So, next time I soak some, I will soak extra and try freezing some “pucks”! If you don’t already soak your oats overnight – try it! Cheers! Evelyn
P.S. – I just looked at the photo again – are you drinking Dr. Pepper with your oatmeal? Too funny!
P.P.S. – I don’t want you to think I am criticizing you for having a Dr. Pepper with breakfast. I often drink a cold Coke in the summer instead of a cup of coffee. Also, because I have asthma and like coffee creamer (which is NOT good for my asthma) I drink Coke instead of coffee sometimes even when I really want coffee! Black coffee works pretty good for asthma though. So, I was just chuckling to see that I am not the only one who has a soda with breakfast sometimes!
Well I too terribly dislike rolled oats! But I had never eaten steel cut oats so I decided to give this a try because I also dislike cold cereal in the winter. I LOVE the steel cut oats and made ahead and frozen like this is just perfect! I put chunky applesauce or frozen peach slices on top and I have a delicious breakfast. I am a convert! Thanks for the great idea!
Ellie – that’s so cool! And I love the idea of applesauce or peach slices, too. Thanks for those ideas!
I had to go straight from this post to your oatmeal pucks post so I could see what you were talking about! I love this idea!!! I will be cooking oatmeal pucks this weekend. Thank you for sharing!
It sure looks like there not much oatmeal in that bowl. Or is that a really big bowl? When I make steel cut oatmeal, I do it in the crockpot overnight. Spoon out what I want and put the rest in the fridge and have it for the next few mornings.
Such a funny story, and I love that you’ve even got reader husbands responding! I think I will try making some of your pucks on Sunday or next week. Dang – there are a lot of your recipes that I keep wanting to make!
I swear, I need to make up a “Judy L’s Cookbook” on my laptop…
