It hasn’t been a whole week since the DISH was turned off. Vince called them on Monday but apparently we were paid through Tuesday at midnight so, instead of getting a $2 refund, we kept it on through Tuesday. We kept Netflix so we’re not totally without anything to watch. We’re selective!
We had been watching Friday Nights and loved it . . we both loved it. We finished that on Tuesday night. It would have been nice if it just kept going and going.
We didn’t watch anything at all til Friday night when we watched Waiting Forever, a movie on Netflix. It was good . . we liked it. Saturday we went through a list of several series type shows and settled on Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve heard a lot about it but neither of us had ever seen it so we watched one or two episodes Saturday and another two tonight.
So far . . we’re doing just fine without satellite or cable.

i don’t understand how that works. don’t you need to have a working t.v. in order to use netflix? and then don’t you have to have to have dish or cable or satelite to have a working t.v.?
do you just plug in a t.v. and it works? yikes!! i’m so technologically challenged.
Seriously – I imagine that you two will continue to be kept busy enough around the house that you will not notice too much of a difference. I’m glad it’s going well, though!!
We have Netflix, too, and I love it. Well, when I use it! It’s not often, but often enough that I don’t want to get rid of it.
We love our netflix too! I’m watching West wing right now but Friday nights is on my que. My daughter watches her anime and my husband is a documentary and music buff. Great value!
Barbara … to have a “working” tv all you have to have is a TV & an antenna. That’s broadcast TV that’s available for everyone, but it’s only “regular” stations…CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, CW…etc.
We got rid of our DirecTV right at a year ago and haven’t missed it at all. We do Netflix & have a Roku Box. Just with those 2 and regular TV shows that we record off Broadcast, we still can’t keep up with all the shows we’d love to see. There are so many that went for several seasons that we’ve watched on Netflix … 24, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Entourage, Leverage, Breaking Bad, The Office, X-Files…etc. Heck…all the CSI’s & Law & Orders could take me forever to get through…LOL!!
I’ve never watched it, but you can watch Friday nights on hulu.com. We’ve enjoyed watching Andy Grifith, the
dick Van Dyke Show, etc. on Netflix. We’ve been married 17 years and only had cable one year of that, somehow it was free for a whole year – LOL I like Food Network and can watch some of those shows on hulu
Hi Judy,
My husband asked me and our son if we cared if he cancelled Dish. Both of us told him he could. So far he hasn’t made the phone call. I wish that he would, he spends A LOT of his time in front of the TV watching nothing.
We got rid of Dish yesterday and put up a digital antenna and we have 8 watchabe channels previously on Dish we only had 5 that we considered watchable. We will see how it goes. We already have a collection of DVD’s that are better than what is on Dish.
I have never tried Netflix. Basically you need a good Internet connection to use that? Right? I didn’t realize that Netflix had regular shows, probably previous years. But it makes sense that it does. I can get that kind of thing through my Kindle Fire too, although I haven’t done that either.
Last night I watched the Grammys and I knit. Enjoyable evening.
Stella,
For Netflix, you don’t have to do the “streaming”…that’s where you need a good internet connection. You can have them send the DVD’s in the mail to you. For me it takes 1-2 days to get the DVD’s from them. The best part on the DVD’s is there’s no “due date” on them. We’ve actually kept some for 3 months before (not meaning to…just didn’t get around to watching them for 3 months…right around Christmas).
As I just mentioned, I am Greek. Growing up in Greece we only had two channels and broadcast started at 4pm. My sister and I were only allowed a very limited amount of TV (I think it was something like one show a day, maybe flipper or lassie)….When I came to the US I became completely “hooked” on 24 hr television – the TV in my office is set on CNN as I am a complete news junkie ! (am I dating myself ?)
I’ve been without cable or satellite here for years. I’m lucky that I do get a lot of local channels, but I generally watch the news, maybe Big Bang Theory, and the Downton Abbey on PBS on Sunday nights. I have a Roku box, so I can get Netflix, etc., but so far, I just watch Amazon Prime free videos and I did subscribe to Acorn TV (British, mostly murder mysteries, which I know are not your favorites!), The Acorn was only $24.95 for the whole year.
I live in a small town, and do not get television reception unless I subscribe to cable or satelite. I cancelled cable TV years ago and have not missed it. I listen to alot of radio, my collections of CD’s,and watch movies (borrowed from the public library). I am surprise when going to my relative’s home to find their TV’s on all the time, even if no one is watching. I enjoy the peace and quite….silence.
