50 Shades of Brown

Not really 50 but it sure seems like no two browns are alike.  The brown used in Nicole’s quilt is Michael Miller Krystal.  Do you know how many shades of brown are in the Krystal line?  At least 10 . . maybe 12, maybe more.

Brown

Last night I thought I didn’t have enough of the brown I had used for the binding.  Then I found some I thought was right but when I lay them all out . . I do not have the same brown.  The one in the front right is the one I used in Nicole’s quilt.  Neither of the other two are right.  They will not be right up against the brown so I think I’ll use either and it will be fine.  What would you do?  I’d probably have to order one yard of every Krystal to get the right one so . . I’m using what I have.

I think you should order more brown. 3 yards of each, you know, just in case! :) :)
I think whichever one you use is going to be perfect.

I read where you can piece your binding to make it go further, use 1 3/4″ of your perfect brown and then piece it with a 1 1/4″ for the inside (the part folded and hidden) for the binding. I have never had to piece the whole binding this way but did for a few inches when I ran out and it seemed to work fine.

I think any of the them will be fine. I would probably use the one in the middle if you have enough. I’ve often needed to “make do” when I get to the borders on my quilt – because I rarely design those in advance. But this is what frustrates me most about fabric – why can’t the manufacturers put the colour number on the selvedge, rather than jsut the name of the fabric line.

Dont you think the one on the left is close enough to a match. I see more and more that people don’t scrutinize that stuff.

Great idea Judy. Just use what you have and it should look terrific!

Not touching – I’d use either one!!! Or order more – always a good option! :-)

  7. 7

I’d use whichever one I thought looked closest and not worry a thing about it. I might even use all of them together and alternate color strips around the quilt!

A blind man would be happy to spot the difference in colour on the binding. Use what you have. Remember, you don’t want to ruin your great numbers on the Stash Report :-)

Binding? I would use what I have…….and I have done so.

If you happen to have the selvage edge in your scrap bucket you could get a number off it and match it with the fabrics for sale. But I trust your judgement, so choose the one you think is best.

If it’s going to bother you, buy another yard or two. But I know exactly what you mean…. there are so many shades of browns and all other colors. You can hardly keep them sorted…..SIGH!!

I think I’d use the darkest of the three, in the middle. Since it’s going to be a binding, it will hang over the edge of the bed, and tend to be in a darker area anyway. You’re right that nobody will even notice.

I’m a big fan of scrappy bindings, especially when the fabric choices are that close.

In the picture on my computer the one on the left looks closer, but could just be the way this computer is set to show color. If it isn’t touching the brown in the quilt it will probably work which ever you use.

I would do a reversible binding. That way you only need 1 inch width of the front color. Or do a scrappy binding using all the brights in her quilt. You will make it work, I know.

Bummer. How bout doing the sides one shade and the top and bottom the other shade?

Hi Judy- I’ve been in the same situation, and decided to order more fabric. It turns out, it was a different dye lot and not only didn’t it match, it wasn’t even close! I ended up using what I had in stash.Your quilt is so colorful and beautiful, no one is going to notice if the color is slightly different. I would use what’s in stash.

Order, Order, Order…..your stash report looks too good!!!

Hi, I think you should go fabric shopping again.
maybe order 4 yards each so you don’t run out of the browns.

considering that you’re talking about binding which will be near the floor, and thus liable to appear darker than it is because of the light in the room, I would choose the middle brown fabric. That one appears to have a greater contrast to your brown that is used in the quilt, and would stand a better chance of appearing like you chose it on purpose as a contrast feature for the quilt, rather than as a match to the other fabrics.
and yes, if you can’t match fabrics perfectly, it’s better to go for a contrast .

Whew! I thought you were writing the second part of THAT book. :) And no, I haven’t read it. :)
I have the same trouble with browns. I have browns coming out of my ears and I never seem to be able to find the right one. Since they’re not touching, you’ll be fine with either one, but a little stash enhancement is never a bad thing either.

Those other browns do not look good with the brown you used., at least, not in the photograph. I know that the camera will change the color, so it’s really impossible to tell.
