I don’t remember doing anything to cause knee pain but the pain in my left knee has been getting worse for a few months. A couple of weeks ago, I saw a nurse practitioner at the bone and joint clinic in Abilene. He thought it was a torn meniscus and ordered an MRI. I had that done and went back to see the doctor yesterday.
He actually said my knee looks great for a 63 year old knee. Ouch! He doesn’t see any sign of needing a knee replacement . . which is good news.
There’s a “Baker’s cyst” (named after a Dr. Baker who discovered it . . not named after a lady who bakes pies, cookies and cakes) in my left knee and while it may or may not be causing the pain, he wants me to get a few injections, do some physical therapy and see him again in a couple of months . . sooner if it gets worse.
He did the first injection and it didn’t hurt but my knee is hurting, hurt all night. Hopefully it will be better in a day or so. I’ll be patient . . though that’s not my strong point.
I was dreading surgery and it was nice to hear that he doesn’t think it’s going to be necessary but . . I was also looking forward to sitting in my chair and knitting for at least a couple of weeks. Vince . . can you get me a Dr. Pepper? Vince, can you take the dogs out? Vince, can you get the clothes out of the dryer and fold them? Best . . Vince, what are you fixing for dinner and what time are we eating?
Oh well . . we all have to live with the hand we’re dealt, right? 🙂

Yes, we certainly do have to deal with the hand we are dealt! I feel for you with that knee. I manage my knee pain with pills, and so far it’s working fine. I couldn’t even imagine asking my hubby to fix a meal! All he seems capable of is sandwiches, and even those I’m sure he wouldn’t make one I’d eat…. Good luck! Did the dr. tell you to try icing it or using warm compresses? Sometimes that helps. Blessings!!!

It could be caused by inflammation caused by food. I did The Elimination Diet (a book by Tom Malterre) last year and eliminated all of my joint pain by the process of elimination. Completely gone, woke up without pain for the first time in a long time. For me potatoes were a huge trigger, also gluten and corn. Eliminating these foods also made me a lot clearer mentally and happy in my mind.

After reading your list of chores that I could potentially get my own husband to do for me, I am beginning to feel a case of ‘old lady’ bad knee coming on!!! However, I will have to make sure that it is NOT my sewing foot pedal knee so that I can still quilt! Thanks for the suggestions!

I had one knee done and it was terrible. I could not be comfortable anywhere. PT for 5 months
5 years later no choice but do the other knee. Sailed right through. Stronger pain meds. Daughter here to provide care that DH just was not so great at.
But I lost 20 lbs which I needed to loose while on stronger pain meds. PT for 3 months and back to doing yard work slowly at that time. Better recovery as better post op care in hospital and PT at home.
I never wanted to sit and do nothing or hand work. I was either up moving or laying and napping while my knee went up and down. Daughter was very very good at getting me to do the 2 to 3 times a day pt between the times the PT came.
Was worth doing them.

I don’t remember doing anything to cause the pain in my ankle either, but it’s been bothering me for two years now. Sometimes hardly at all, & seriously hurts at others. Back in June I came down on it wrong going down some steps & since then it’s been worse…maybe sprained it in addition to whatever else is going on. Mentioned it to my Dr. when I went for my checkup. Her reply? Probably vascular, wear a compression sock. I’ve taken pills for so long for pain, first a tooth and now the ankle that my ears are ringing rather badly so I’m trying to not take them any more. Gettin’ old isn’t for the faint of heart.

My husband was having knee problems and was diagnosed with a Baker cyst. He had to wear a knee high compression stocking for about a month and do some excercises. Since then, touch wood, his knee has been fine.

Was the injection Synvisc?

Ice it at night. Will help quite a bit. 20 minutes.

I laughed out loud about your “Vince, can you …..” If this happened to me, I would lose so much weight and the house would be a wreck because my DH wouldn’t handle ANY of it. He would go out to eat and bring in what I wanted, but that would be the extent of “help” I’m afraid. I pray the good Lord keeps me as healthy and strong as possible. The alternative would be bleak.
Hope you find some relief and what the cause might be.
