Last night I finished There and Back by Anna Victoria. This is the first really lacy all over shawl I think I’ve done and I know it’s the first time I’ve used so many beads. According to the designer, there are a total of 19,498 stitches and 891 beads. There are probably an equal number of beads in my chair, under my chair and on the floor around my chair!
The yarn that’s recommended is a 50% wool/50% silk yarn. I used a wool/nylon blend so it blocks a bit differently. Also, I’m a horribly loose knitter. The pattern calls for size 4.0 mm needles and 383 – 459 yards. I started out using 3.75 mm needles but by Chart 5, I switched to size 4.0 mm needles, so my lace could open up a bit. I actually used 486 yards (of a 510 skein).
Towards the end, I was weighing the yarn after every row (and using a bit of my old shorthand!). I knew I could order another skein but really hated to do so for just a row or two and in the end, I made it.
I love it . . totally love it! Could not put it down while knitting . . start to finish it took 6 days.
Once the wind dies down a bit, probably not today, I’ll take some photos of it on the dress form.

Don’t crochet but that is lovely, but I noticed the shorthand. I still use it too.

That’s absolutely gorgeous. I’m not a knitter, but I’d guess that being a loose knitter is easier on your hands than being a tight one. The only shorthand I know is the kind I learned as a court reporter, which used letters and numbers in various combinations.

This is so stunning and what an achievement – I have NOT ventured into Lace patterns for a reason. My question to you is – what do you wash your knitted pieces in before blocking. I usually use wool blend yarns. Thanks a lot. JudyC
