Quilt

If made according to these directions, the quilt will measure 69″ x 83″ finished.

For the fabric requirements, the amount of yardage is given as if I were writing this for a commercial pattern.  The exact inches given are . . exact inches needed.  This allows no room for straightening the fabric if needed . . this is exactly how many inches of fabric you will use.  I wouldn’t recommend using a fabric that has 40″ if exactly 40″ is needed.  I would feel comfortable using a 42″ piece.  Use your own judgment!

Sewing Directions:

1. Using 2-1/2” light background strips (A) and 2-1/2” blue strips (B), make 1-1/2 sets. Press seam allowances towards darker strips. Cut into 24 – 2-1/2” segments.

1

2. Using 2-1/2” light background strips (A) and 2-1/2” blue strips (B), make 1 strip set. Press seam allowances towards darker strips. Cut into 12 – 2-1/2″ segments.2

3. Using the segments, make 12 nine patches. Press seam allowances away from the center strip.

3

4. Sew a 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” light background strip (C) to two opposite sides of the nine patches. Make 12.

4

5. Sew a 2-1/2” blue strip (D) to the top and bottom of a 6-1/2” light background strip (E). Make 1 strip set. Press seam allowances towards darker strips. Cut into 14 – 2-1/2″ segments.

5

6. Sew a segment from Step 5 to the top and bottom of two units from Step 4. Make 2.

6

7. Sew a segment from Step 5 to the bottom only of 10 units from Step 4. Make 10.

7

8. Sew a 2-1/2” blue square (F) to one end of a 2-1/2” x 8-1/2” light background (F-1) rectangle. Make 6.

8

9. Sew the unit from Step 8 to the top of a unit from Step 4. Make 6.

9

10. Sew a 2-1/2” x 10-1/2” light background strip (G) to the top of a unit from Step 4. Make 4.

10

11. Sew a 3” X 5-1/2” blue rectangle (H) to two opposite sides of a 5-1/2” dark background square (I). Make 14.

11

12. Sew a 3” x 10-1/2” blue rectangle (J) to the top and bottom of four segments from Step 11. Make 4.

12

13. Sew a 3” x 10-1/2” blue rectangle (J) to the top only of the remaining 10 segments from Step 11. Make 10.

13

14. Sew a 3” gold square (L) to a 3” x 8” blue rectangle (K). Make 4.

14

15. Add the segment from Step 14 to the bottom of 4 units from Step 13. Make 4.

15

16. Sew a 3” red square (M) to a 3” x 8” blue rectangle (K). Make 6.

16

17. Add the segment from Step 16 to the bottom of 6 of the units from Step 13. Make 6.

17

18. Sew a 3” light background strip (N) to 3” red strip (O). Make 1 strip set. Cut into 12 – 3” segments.

Note:  After cutting the 12 – 3″ segments, from the leftover strip, cut one 3-1/4″ square of dark blue fabric.  Cut it on the diagonal twice to have 4 triangles. (Y)

21

22. Sew a segment from Step 21 to the top and bottom of the segment from Step 20. Make 6.

22

23. Using the (T) triangles, and the 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” dark background rectangles (U), the 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” dark background rectangles (V), the 2-1/2” squares (W), create 14 of each of the following:

23

24. Sew them together as follows:

24

27

28. Sew 2 blue triangles (T) to the ends of a 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” dark background rectangle (U). Make 4.

28

29. Sew the units from Steps 26 and 27 together to create the four corner triangles. Make 4.

Setting the Rows Together:

So you can see the block lines, I’ve changed the dark blue to lighter blue for the following diagram:

30

Without borders, including seam allowances, the top should measure real close to 57” x 71-1/4”. With the blocks being set on point, the measurements aren’t exact but are within ¼” of these measurements. I don’t worry about ¼”!  There are some bias edges in there so be real careful about stretching the top.

For the Borders:

Since there are no pieced borders, use whatever size you’d like. Check your leftover strips to see if any of them can be used.

For my borders, here’s what I used:
Border #1 – Blue. Strips are cut 2-1/2”.
• Sides should be 2-1/2” x 71-1/4”.
• Top and Bottoms should be 2-1/2” x 60”.
Border #2 – Dark Background. Strips are cut 1-1/2”.
• Sides should be 1-1/2” x 74-1/4”.
• Top and Bottoms should be 1-1/2” x 62”.
Border #3 – Blue. Strips are cut 4”.
• Sides should be 4” x 76-1/4”.
• Top and Bottoms should be 4” x 69”.
