Applique Patterns

Through the years, I’ve always wanted to hand applique.  I know that I can but I think it’s just that I don’t take the time to do it.  It would take lots and lots of practice to do good work and I think I’m just too impatient.  Also, I like to start a project and be done  .. maybe not always finish it but at least make some quick progress.  I’ve taken applique classes from some of the best teachers and I just never do it.

I had not forgotten about buying these patterns but when I came across them recently, I had to laugh at myself.

There are 12 patterns.  It’s from Ornamental Applique.  They were at a quilt show . . probably in 2002 or 2003.  They had this quilt in their booth and it was gorgeous.  Whatever possessed me to buy all 12 patterns?  Is there anyone out there who thinks there’s even a slim chance I’ll ever make even one of these blocks?  ME!  I think I will.  I think I’ll make all 12 of them . . some day . . but not any time soon.

Nine Patch Top

Yesterday I finished this little nine patch top except for the borders.

A friend who does fantastic hand applique has offered to do some applique on it . . an owl, of course, so I sent it off to her today.  I was waiting to be sure the baby was going to be a girl, as she was first told.  Then she told me that she’d rather it be gender neutral so that any future babies can use it too.  She wanted greens, tans, golds . . so I made it and it’s so cute and it’s going to be even cuter with the applique added.

When I get it back, I’ll add borders and quilt it and get it delivered . . though I know it will be long after the baby is born!

I Did It – Applique

Kinda . . The first block I did for the Christmas Town Sampler, besides my own, was Sheryl’s block.  It’s such a pretty block.

When I say I don’t know how to applique . . I mean I really don’t know how to applique.  I want to applique and I know I could do it if I practiced but I just don’t want to take the time to learn.  I guess I just want to blink my eyes and do perfect applique.  That’s a bad attitude, huh?

Thank goodness Sheryl told us to cut our background square larger.  I knew to do that but had forgotten but since I always read instructions before doing anything (stop laughing!), I cut my square 14″.

Don’t even ask me how long I’ve had this Steam-A-Seam2.  I don’t even know why I bought it.  I think I was supposed to use Steam-A-Seam Light but that’s not what I had so . . I  used what I had.

Considering my fear of applique, I think I did pretty good.  I did make a boo-boo.

My first choice of fabric for the holly leaves was too light.  At first I said . . what the heck . . I’m leaving it.  But then I knew it would always bug me and I’m going to love this quilt so I pulled off the light green holly leaves and replaced them with a darker green fabric.

I didn’t do any stitching yet. I’m going to wait til the end til all the applique blocks (assuming there will be others!) are done and then when I put on red thread, I can do all the red stitching, and when I switch to yellow, I can do all the yellow stitching.

So  . . what do you think about my applique so far?
