Home!

There’s truly no place like home.   Not sure why but this trip was exhausting!  Got up early Monday morning and was on the road by 7 a.m.  We got to Paducah around 4 p.m. and met Becky at Hancock’s.  I bought nothing there.  I was doing so good!  Nothing really tempted me.  I’m a stashbuster, you know?  From there we went to Eleanor Burns’ tent and I suddenly was no longer a stashbuster.  Everything went down hill from there.  Tuesday afternoon I signed books at The Village Mercantile booth.

These are my friends.  Kneeling in front of the table is Betty, owner of  The Village Mercantile.  Leaning by me is my friend, Becky from Kentucky.  Directly behind me is Kim, next to her is Elaine and next to Elaine in the dark blue is Sue.

That evening I signed books at the AQS Book Fair.

Elaine, Kim, Sue, Becky and I stayed in a cabin at the state park and we had so much fun!  We laughed til we cried every night, stayed up way too late, slept late enough that we missed getting clean towels several mornings but that’s a whole story in itself!

My friends made me swear to “What happens in Paducah stays in Paducah!”  Otherwise, I could tell you some stories that would have you all wanting to stay with these girls.  They were so funny.

There will be a couple more Paducah posts coming . . things I bought, things I saw (not things I saw in my own cabin  .. I promised not to tell!).

The stash report is going to be painful . . real painful.  But, I’m going to increase the effort and still hope to reach my goal.

But, for tonight . . I’m going to sleep in my own bed and sleep real good!

Quilt Show Attendance

As I think about leaving next week for the AQS Show in Paducah, KY, thoughts run through my head about the show.  The quilts, the friends I’ll run into, what I might buy, what I see that I will think about buying but won’t buy.  It’s a long trip from here but shorter than some will have to make.

For nine years, we lived about 2 hours from Paducah and many of the quilters from our former town will be in Paducah so I’ll run into some of them there.  Anywhere I teach, no matter how far away, there’s always someone who will be attending the show so I’ll run into some of those nice people there.  Becky, who is my good friend from Kentucky will be meeting me there and we’ll room together.  It’s always fun to see her.  I’ll see Betty, who is the shop owner for what was my LQS when I was in KY.

What might I buy?  Hopefully not much fabric but you never know what might jump out and attach itself to me.  I will be looking for enough of the red dot to finish the binding on this quilt.  Some days I think I’ll buy a new sewing machine; some days I think I’ll wait til my old Bernina quits and some days I think I’ll just keep sewing on the Singer 301 machines and never buy a new machine.  What would make me buy a new machine?  If Bernina ever makes a machine with dual feed, just basic stitches, metal parts . . no doubt I’ll grab one of those.  For now, I can’t see paying for all the bells and whistles which, at this time, I have no desire to use.

If you were going to a big quilt show next week, what would you do?  Simply visit with friends?  Buy fabric?  Buy new gadgets?  Buy a big ticket item (like sewing machine, sewing table, longarm)?

Come See Me in Paducah

If you’re going to Paducah next week for the big AQS Show, come by and see me!  Here’s where I’ll be signing books.  Even if you don’t want a book or already have your book, still come by . . I’d love to meet you and you know, I surely don’t want to be sitting around with no one to talk to!  :)

On Tuesday and Thursday from 1 – 3 p.m., I will be in the booth of Village Mercantile.  The Village Mercantile was my local quilt shop when I lived in Kentucky and I dearly love that shop.  Betty carries so much fabric and she always has her both at shows stocked to the gills too.  I heard there’s a coupon on the website that you can print and get a discount at her booth during the show.

The Village Mercantile booth will be located at 215 Broadway, right on the main drag in downtown Paducah. It is right in the middle of a lot of the restaurants downtown.

They will have both Nine Patch Extravaganza and Weekend Quilts.

The other place I’ll be is at the AQS sponsored Book Fair.  Other AQS authors will also be there.  This one is held Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the hallway between the Julian Carroll Convention Center and the Expo Center.  These joined buildings are located at One Executive Boulevard in downtown Paducah.

Hope to see many of you in Paducah!!

Book Proposal Addition

Andi Reynolds, executive editor with AQS, has left a comment on the blog entry about book proposals.  Andi does a lecture at the AQS shows (not the upcoming show in Lancaster though) covering information to help those of us wanting to be published by AQS.  Andi is also at the shows to visit with “want to be” authors about ideas and proposals.  If you’re at any AQS show and find a moment between drooling over the quilts and vendor booths, and would like to talk to Andi, you can check with the Workshop booth to see where she can be found.

There’s really nothing to be afraid or scared of when thinking about submitting a proposal.  What’s the worst thing in the whole world that can happen?  They don’t accept your proposal!  If that happens, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a good idea.  It could mean you have a fantastic idea and great quilts but AQS has just accepted a similar proposal from another author.  It could mean there’s a book about to hit the market, maybe even done by another publisher, that is similar to your idea.

So, you have a choice — you can submit a proposal with your fantastic idea and maybe end up with your book being published or . . you can sit back and be scared!  Not trying to be snippy but that’s just the way it is.  The world passes us by if we don’t step out of our comfort zone sometimes.   Don’t be the one who’s sitting in the easy chair 10 years from now, looking back and wishing you’d submitted your proposal.
