Quilting is Hard Work!

Yes, it’s worth it but it’s still hard — especially when I’m pushing to meet the stashbusting goal I set for myself for 2010.  Designing the quilts and making the tops is fun.  Getting them quilted and bound is where the hard work comes in for me.  I could easily put off quilting them and end up with a ton of unquilted tops.  And the binding . . but, it’s not a finished quilt til the binding is done, right?

After quilting dad’s big quilt over the weekend, yesterday morning I loaded the second Big Star top.  I wanted to get it quilted yesterday because I have another one to load and quilt today.  At 6 p.m. I still hadn’t had time to get any quilting done but I was determined to get it quilted and . . quilted it is!

Guess what’s happening today?  I’m going to quilt something besides Keryn Emmerson’s Spiral Square panto.  Bet you thought I’d never switch to something else, huh?  Thanks Keryn for a wonderful panto.  I’m sure it won’t be long til I’m using it again.

The Second Big Star Top

Did I ever show the finished Big Star top?  I think I forgot to show it.  It still isn’t quilted but that could happen this afternoon or tomorrow.

Today I’m trying to finish my dad’s top.  I thought I had enough of the outer border fabric to use for the binding but I don’t so I’m re-thinking the outer border/binding situation.  Such tough decisions I’m called upon to make! :)

Speaking of decisions, I’m using my chicken flannel as backing for my dad’s quilt.

Since the chickens have to vertical on the backing, it’s taking three strips to get the backing pieced.  Aren’t these chickens so cute?  Almost as cute as my darling Ruby!

Big Star Progress

Every morning when I wake up, I want to head straight downstairs and start sewing.  The morning chores have to be done before I can start sewing but I’m usually at the machine by 9 or 9:30.

One morning this week, I had all the Big Star blocks and sashing strips made.  I was anxious to get started on the border blocks.  They’re my favorite part, you know?

Then I realized I hadn’t stuck in the sashing squares so I added those.

The border blocks kinda look like Mickey Mouse ears, huh?

Finished all the pieced blocks.  Sewed the blocks and rows together.  Started adding the non-pieced borders and they weren’t fitting.  They always fit!  I use Electric Quilt and the measurements are perfect.  I had used the wrong size for the sashing!  A bit of adjusting on the non-pieced borders and everything worked out but I hate when that happens!

UFO #4

Saturday I finished the binding on the purple and green quilt, then loaded the smaller Big Star quilt.  It’s about 72″ x 90″.

I was determined to get it quilted before I went to bed.  And I did!

Sunday I was determined to get the binding done.  At one point I had an entire bolt of the purple fabric in the borders but I’ve used it on several quilts and was having to piece together little short strips to get enough of it for the binding.  It worked, with just a couple of inches to spare.  I don’t like cutting it that close.

It’s done!  I like this quilt a lot!  I like all quilts a lot though!

Four down, four to go to meet my goal of finishing 8 UFO’s before the end of the year.

Big Star Top

Finally got the last border on this quilt.

I’ve made the binding, using the purple outer border fabric . . every inch of that fabric that I had left was used and I’m afraid I’ll be a couple of inches short.  I’d love to get it quilted soon.

Which Border?

For the Big Star Stash Project, assuming I can get them both to work easily with this quilt, which border pattern do you want?  Majority rules and whichever one you don’t pick will probably show up on another quilt soon.

Border #1:

Border #2, which is probably the border or a similar border that was originally shown with the quilt.
