Sewing Instructions:

10.  Sew a 2″ background strip (K) to the top and bottom of a 1-1/2″ colored strip (L).  Make 1-1-/2 strip sets of each of the four colors.  Press seam allowances towards colored strip.  Cut each color into 12 – 4-1/2″ segments.  You will have 12 segments for each color!

That’s it for this week.  Try to get all caught up before next week . . ok?

Morning Splash #3

Cutting Instructions:

Accent Fabric:
1- 1-1/2″ strips (I)

Gold:
1 – 2-1/2″ strip (J)

Colored Fabrics:

For this fabric, I’m giving the instructions for cutting all you’ll need of the colored fabrics.  Stick aside everything except (V).

2 – 1-1/2″ strips (L)
1 – 2-7/8″ strip.  Cut into 12 – 2-7/8″ squares (M)

1 – 9-1/4″ strip. Cut into:

  • 2 – 9-1/4″ squares. Cut these on the diagonal twice so you have 8 triangles (X)
  • 8 – 4-1/2″ squares (V) (See Note Below)

NOTE:  You need a total of 12 of each of the 4-1/2″ colored squares.  Depending on the width of your fabric, and how many squares you were able to cut from the remainder of the 9-1/4″ strips, cut a 4-1/2″ strip and cut the remaining 4-1/2″ squares . . just so you end up with 12 – 4-1/2″ squares of each color!

Sewing Instructions:

7.  Sew a 1-1/2″ black strip (I) to the top and bottom of a gold 2-1/2″ strip (J).  Make 1/2 strip set.  Cut into 12 – 1-1/2″ segments.

78.  Sew a segment from Step 7 to two opposite sides of the units from Step 6.  Make 6.

89.  Assemble the block, using segments from Steps 5 and 8, together with one (per block) of each of the four colored squares.  (V) Be sure to keep the numbers in the right order.  If you don’t keep the #1 color in the spot on all blocks, your design will be off.  Look at the cheat sheet you downloaded on Monday.

NOTE:  Virginia asked which way the strips from Step 5 go.  They can go towards the #1 and #3 squares or they can go towards the #2 and #4 squares . . just be consistent in the way you place them.  Some fabrics won’t even show which way they go.  My first quilt with the black fabric . . doesn’t show where the seam is but some fabrics, it will matter.

Make 6 blocks.

Morning Splash #2

Cutting Instructions:

Border Fabric:
1- 2-1/2″ strips (H)

Accent Fabric:
9 – 1-1/2″ strips.  Cut these into:

  • 34 – 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ rectangles (E)
  • 34 1-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangles (F)
  • 10 – 1-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangles (Z) (Save these for later)

Gold:
1 – 1-1/2″ strip (G)

Sewing Instructions:

4.  Sew a 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ accent strip (E) to the top of the Step 3 units.  Make 12 of the units shown on the left.  Make 22 of the units shown on the right.  Press seam allowances towards the (E) strip.

4

5.  Add a 1-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ accent strip (F) to the sides as shown below.  Make 12 of the units on the left and 22 of the units on the right.  Set aside 10 of the 22 units to be used in the setting triangles.  12 of each will be used in the current block.  Press seam allowances towards the (F) strip.

5

To make half a strip set, cut the strips in half along the fold line so instead of having a strip set the width of the fabric, you’ll have a strip set the width of half the fabric.

6.  Sew a 1-1/2″ gold strip (G) to the top and bottom of a 2-1/2″ border fabric strip (H).  Make 1/2 strip set.  Press seam allowances towards border fabric strip.  Cut into 6 – 2-1/2″ segments.

Morning Splash #1

You might want to download this little cheat sheet.  Click here to download and print a .pdf file.  Print it.  Glue a little strip of your fabric to the corresponding box.  It will help you out later.

LayoutHere’s my little cheat sheet that I pinned up to the wall in front of where I sew.

This pattern is all typed up as a Word document and I’m having to retype it all in segments for the blog because I can’t cut/paste.  If you see anything that doesn’t look right, please ask me before cutting your fabric.  I’m checking and double checking . . I know the pattern is correct but I’m trying to be careful as I re-type everything here.
