Planning Menus

Since so many ask me how I get so much done, all through the day I’m trying to think of what I do that’s not normal.  Despite trying by best to figure it out, I can’t come up with anything to tell you.  I think I do what everyone else does, but I just write about it all.  If you write down what you do all day every day, I think you’ll be surprised at how much you accomplish too.  I do sleep, but not enough.  I’ve always been one who falls asleep the minute my head hits the pillow and don’t wake up once til the alarm goes off, though I often wake up a few minutes before the alarm just because I hate to be awakened from a sound sleep by the alarm.

Because there has to be a plan and I have to know exactly what’s going to happen each day, I have a menu done for each week . . well in advance of that week. Click to make it larger if you want to read it.

I hear from many who cannot plan ahead.  If you’ve tried it and it doesn’t work for you . . at least you know what works or doesn’t work for you.  If you find you’re spending a lot of time thinking about what you’re fixing for dinner, try making a menu.  Find recipes that look like something you and your family will LOVE!  I never fix something I don’t LOVE, except spaghetti and meatballs.  I hardly eat it at all but Vince and Chad love it and it’s family tradition for Vince for it to be served every Sunday so . . it’s always on my Sunday menu.  If I choose something for dinner that is something I can hardly wait to eat, then cooking is fun . . not a chore.

If it’s a dish that requires a recipe, I either print those or bookmark them on the laptop that stays in the kitchen.  If they’re printed, then I keep them with the printed menu.  At the end of the week, the recipes that we would like to have again, go into a “Future Menu Folder”.  Those that were just . . ok . . go in the trash, never to be tried again. I rarely make a recipe exactly as printed.  There are always a few tweaks . . something added, more or less of something or even something left off completely.

And, the menu for the next week is done too!

The menus and my grocery list are kept on my iPod Touch so when I go to the grocery store, I have my list with me.  This is what works for me . . it may or may not help you.

A Morning in the Kitchen

Usually I spend Sunday afternoon getting the majority of the cooking done for the week.  We had company this past weekend and with it being a holiday weekend, I just never got around to cooking.  For a while I thought I might just cook each day as needed but I’m so used to doing most of the cooking at once, I went ahead and got started as soon as Vince left for work this morning.

This type cooking won’t work for everyone but if you think it might, you really should try it.

By 8 a.m. I had started cooking.  Here’s what I did:

  • Boiled and skinned new potatoes for potatoes with milk gravy for dinner tonight.
  • Made 2 pans of Italian meatloaf.  One is for tonight.  One is for the freezer.
  • Made 2 loaves of white bread.  We’re having leftover roast beef sandwiches for lunch tomorrow and I love roast beef on white bread.
  • Made chicken with artichokes and mushrooms for dinner Tuesday night.
  • Made Chicken Paprikash for dinner Wednesday night.  I made a double batch of sauce so all I’ll have to do next time is season and bake the chicken.  The sauce is what takes a while.
  • Made Mozzarella, Tomato & Basil Salad for part of lunch tomorrow.

Except for opening a few cans, heating up a few things, boiling some pasta, baking potatoes, making a salad or two, and grilling steaks one night and lamb chops another night, my cooking is done all the way through next Sunday!

In just 3 hours from the time I started, everything was done and my kitchen was clean . . and I was tired!

Here’s my menu for the week and you can see how easy our meals will be for the rest of the week:

Tuesday (tonight):
Italian meatloaf
New potatoes with milk gravy
Green Beans
Salad
Crusty Bread

Wednesday:
Chicken with Artichokes & Mushrooms
Pasta
Fried Okra
Salad
Crescent Rolls

Thursday:
Chicken Paprikash
Gnocchi
Steamed Broccoli
Garlic Bread

Friday:
Grilled Lamb Chops
Mint Jelly
Twice Baked Potatoes
Dilly Sweet Carrots

Saturday:
Pizza

Sunday:
Spaghetti & Meatballs
Salad
Crusty Bread

If you ever try cooking like this, my bet is you won’t ever do it any other way.

Quiltathon Preparations

Our first Quiltathon of 2010 is this coming weekend.  Planning ahead is essential in order to devote as much time as possible to sewing during the weekend.  It really doesn’t matter if you sew 2 hours or 20 hours or 30 hours this weekend.  What matters is that you plan ahead and maximize your sewing time.  Because I love to cook, I can spend all day every day in the kitchen but that takes away from my sewing time.  Here’s my menu for this week:

If you click on the menu, you should be able to get a larger version.  On Saturday, we’re having hot tamales, chili and corn & black bean salad.  I’ll make the chili Thursday or Friday.  Tamales are in the freezer.  Corn & black bean salad is better made a day or two ahead so I’ll make that Thursday or Friday.

For Sunday, Spaghetti & Meatballs, Salad and Crusty bread.  Meatballs are in the freezer.  Spaghetti sauce is from jars that I canned during the summer.  I’ll stir up the bread on Friday or Saturday and bake it right before we eat.  All I’ll need to do is make a salad.

With just a little planning ahead, I’ll hardly have any cooking to do over the weekend and everything we have is yummy!  Except for the green salad on Sunday, every single thing can be done ahead.  I could even buy the salad in a bag already made but I usually don’t.

There will be leftover soup and leftover chicken stuffed manicotti.  Everyone is on their own for lunch on weekends.  I fix a big breakfast and we don’t usually eat til about 9 a.m.  Lunch is usually more snacking than a meal on weekends.

Got your weekly menu made?  Try it . . even if you aren’t doing the Quiltathon with us — you may be surprised what a difference it makes to have everything planned out ahead.
