Safety in the City

These guys don’t know how lucky they are!  No hunting or shooting of any kind inside the city.  I couldn’t get good pictures because I was outside without my coat and it was about 10 ° and I was shivering!

DSC09263

Yesterday evening as I was watching for the chickens to go into the coop so I could close them up for the night, I looked out and saw this.  There were 7 or 8 deer out there.  They really don’t get too concerned with me being out there unless I make a sudden move.

DSC09271

They walked through my back yard and looked around for something to eat but found nothing; went into the neighbor’s back yard and munched on a few of her plants, then crossed the street.  They’re standing on the corner . . I guess trying to decide where they’re headed, when cars begin to stop and look at them.  It’s strange that most of the town and half the country folks don’t see deer like we do.  They live in the woods behind our house and I knew that no matter where they went, they’d be passing back through soon as it was about to get dark.

DSC09273

This particular car stopped and the lady got out with her camera.  She must have a blog!  :)   The deer decided to start heading back towards home . . no matter which direction they turn, there’s a lady with a camera!  Hey . . better than a hunter with a gun, right?

Wildlife Pix

It’s been so fun checking the pictures on the trail cam.  We’ve had a few cats, squirrels, rabbits, crows and mostly deer.  At least we’ve seen no humans  except for us. . cuz there shouldn’t be any back there!  Here are some of the deer pictures we’ve gotten so far.  Some are grainy, some are blurry . . they don’t always stand still for the camera!

Who needs street lights when we have this creature in the woods!  Don’t worry . . it’s the flash . . not a mutant deer.

And the cutest and the wildest of all the wildlife we’ve ever seen . .

Recipe Today at Lime Green KitchenPita Bread

Cooking is not only a hobby but a MUST DO at our house.  We live in a small town and except for our infrequent trips to a city, our meals consist of every day, easy to find ingredients.  We love good food and I love trying new recipes.  Too often I forget to take pictures of the ingredients sitting out on the counter, of each step along the way so on this blog, you’ll find photos of whatever I remember to photograph . . no promises about the pictures.  I will promise yummy, husband and family pleasing recipes!

Who Needs Rudolph?

DSC08676

Looks like the new crop of deer have LED’s for eyes.  Who would need Rudolph’s red nose to guide the sleigh if you had 12 deer with these eyes?  Don’t worry . . it was just the flash on my camera.  And, why am I thinking about Santa already?  Maybe it’s that gas stove.

My sweet, hard headed, will not listen to anything I say son, Chad, has put out corn for the deer so he can get a picture of them.  Goofy guy . . I get pictures of them every day without feeding them.  If I had any hopes of ever having a garden, I’d be upset with him for feeding them but having a garden here . . well, the chances are about as good as the chance of getting a gas stove at this house.  Darned . . are you tired of hearing about that stove?  I am! :)

DSC08679

The lure of the corn was stronger than the fear of the woman with the camera.

DSC08684

But, alas, they decided to calmy walk away, knowing I’d go back in the house and they could come back and finish off the corn.

Candid Camera

sign

A week or so ago, Chad and I bought a game camera.

DSC08503

I didn’t know too much about them (still don’t) but Chad did all the research and since I was buying, everything was an issue but price.  After it got here, it rained non-stop for 40 days and 40 nights. . or so it seemed.  The camera is supposed to be waterproof but was just too nasty for us to get out there and get it set up.  One night we finally managed to get it set up (in the dark I might add).  While out there, I was thinking . . if we’re trying to get pictures of wild animals, aren’t they hiding around the corner waiting to eat us?  Chad’s friend who lives not too far away thinks he got a picture of a mountain lion on his camera.  I think it was a really big house cat . . I think he visits my house sometimes too.  Anyway, we got it set up and because I kept saying hurry Chad!, we had it pointed up so we got pictures of the tops of trees.  When the wind blew, the twigs and weeds would wiggle and the camera would think it was a 20 point buck  (or a mountain lion) and it would take a picture of . . tree tops.  We brought the camera in and waited for better weather.

This past weekend Chad and I set it all up again.  This time we took my digital camera out and took photos at the exact angle as the game camera to see what we would be getting if it takes pictures.

DSC08595

My back yard from an angle you haven’t seen before.  Pretend I live on 100 acres and that house isn’t there!

DSC08597

Something about this angle bothers me.  I can see us getting a perfect shot of the south end of a buck facing north!  Not exactly what I want to see.  Let’s make an adjustment to the angle.

DSC08598

Better . . maybe.  We’ll just have to wait and see what kind of shots we get.  I’m pretty excited to see if we get good wildlife pictures (and to prove to myself there’s not a mountain lion living back there) but I promised Chad I wouldn’t look at the pictures til he gets home.  But .. he’d probably never know if I sneak a peak .. right?

Neighbors . . Don’t Want Them

The lot next door to us is vacant.  It, along with a couple of lots adjoining it, and a couple of lots across the street from me are still for sale.  I asked Vince if we could please buy the lot next to us because I don’t want neighbors.  He said “NO!  No one is ever going to buy that lot.”  It’s real REAL small and I don’t see how anyone could build a house that meets the minimum square feet.

But, when we lived in KY, there were 2 acres next to us for sale.  I asked Vince if we could please buy those two acres because I didn’t want neighbors.  He said “NO!  No one is ever going to buy that land.”  His reasoning was that the only buildable section was right up at the front, on the highway and then it dropped off.  A creek that ran through the very back of our property came up through the front part of that property.  Well, wouldn’t you know it . . someone bought the 2 acres, and built a house.

At least monthly I say “are you sure we can’t buy that lot next door?”  He doesn’t even answer me any more . . he just looks at me.  The answer is NO!

About a month ago, strangers began walking around on that lot.  Then they put out some stakes like where the four corners of the house would be.  I do not want neighbors!

When I look out the door of my basement, I’m looking toward that lot.  I don’t want to see a house and people.  I want to see grass and land and that makes me feel like I’m not living in the city.

Last night I looked out the door and this is what I saw:

DSC07977

He was messing around in the little creek bed that divides the other lot from my lot.

DSC07985

This is the for sale lot where they’ve been cleaning.  Oh, I almost forgot the whole point of this post.  I was so frustrated about getting new neighbors.  But yesterday when I went to the grocery store, I saw that the prospective new neighbors had chosen a different lot . . one on the corner completely at the other end of the street and they’ve already poured the footings.  Whew . . no new neighbors for now.

Then Vince and I talked:

Me:  Did you see they’re building their house down on the corner instead of next door?
Vince:  Yes, I saw that.
Me:  Can we buy that lot so we don’t have neighbors?
Vince:  NO!  No one is ever going to build on that lot?

Men!!

Want to see what’s behind my house and off to the side?  This explains why I have so many deer.

DSC07981

Who would think we’re right in town, 4 blocks off the five lane (the five lane with no traffic).  If only we had 40 acres and a pond!

How Cute!

Monday morning . . who loves a Monday? I do! It’s cloudy, and I can hear thunder in the distance. I love rain and thunderstorms so long as there aren’t tornadoes. Chad was supposed to be at work at 10 so I hadn’t planned to start sewing real early since the sewing machine is right outside his bedroom door. He got called in at 7:30 so I was able to start sewing 2-1/2 hours earlier than I had planned. That’s good!

The music is playing . . the channel Vince and Chad moan and complain about when they’re here . . no one here to complain. I can sing along and no one looks at me like I’ve lost my mind! Thermostat is set where I want it without Chad here to complain that he’s cold or Vince to complain about the electric bill.  I’m enjoying my Monday morning!

As I move from the sewing machine to the ironing board, I glance out the windows and . . is this what I think it is?

DSC07799a

I took the picture from inside because I didn’t want to scare them off before I got a picture.  It’s a fawn nursing!  Isn’t that just so cute?

Then as quietly as possible, I opened the door but they’re so close, they heard me.

DSC07800a

How lucky am I to have this view from my sewing room!
