More Babies

Not chickens this time though . .

Sunday afternoon I was out watering.  My routine is to go turn the soaker hoses on in the garden,  turn on. the two faucets in front and let them start running on the fruit trees.  I’ll move those when I think the trees have had enough water and as soon as I get a spare hose, I’ll water the flowers (weeds) in front of the house.  I had been out watering for about an hour and when I started watering the flowers, a little critter scurried across the ground and hid under a plant.

It’s a little bitty rabbit and he thinks he’s hidden so well!  I ran around back . . no, don’t ask if I really ran.  I walked around back and yelled for Vince to come see the baby rabbit.  He came and we wondered where the mom was because he’s a little guy.

As I was walking around looking for where he might have come from, I saw a little bit of fur on the ground and there was a little hole in the ground with another baby rabbit!

Vince went and got some a glove because he didn’t know if the little guy would bite him.  He caught him!  I cheered him on! Go Vince!  Catch him!  Don’t let him get away!  Good job, Vince!

Thumper!  Is that a cute little guy or what?  I wanted to keep him and let him be a pet.  The baby chickens and the baby rabbit could grow up together . . and live happily ever after.  Vince said No!  He does not want to be responsible for anything else . . not another critter and not another human . . nothing else he said.

So, Vince deposited him back in the hole with his brother or sister and he was so happy.  He scurried right down next to the other one.

In the meantime, I totally forgot about the water hose I had flung out of the way when I went to run get Vince.

A small part of my yard must be happy.

We watched off and on during the evening to be sure mama rabbit came back and she did.  In fact, she took them both out for a little exercise.  We didn’t see them come back but the babies are there again this morning so I guess everything is fine.

Can You Find the Frog?

Our part of Texas seems to have more than its share of critters.  We still are overrun with giant grasshoppers but now we have frogs.  They’re all fairly small, especially if compared to the bullfrogs in Louisiana.  They come out mostly in the evening and while I don’t see them much, I see where they’ve been . . what they’ve left behind . . if you know what I mean!

Yesterday I was heading out to water the grapevines and right in front of the outside faucet, I saw this tiny little frog.

See him right next to the two acorns?  Those acorns are quite small and so was that little frog.  I sure hope he has the good sense to stay out of the chicken yard.  I’m afraid he might become an evening snack if he ventures into their space.  He surely is a tiny little guy.  Wonder how old he is.  Wonder how long they live in these parts.

Garden Security

We knew right off the bat that in order to have a garden, we would have to fence it quite securely to keep out the deer, rabbits and who knows what else.  We have about 10′ of fencing around the garden.  The top 8′ is plastic landscape fencing, which so far has been tall enough to keep the deer out, and the bottom 2′ is metal chicken wire to keep the rabbits out.  They would chew through the plastic so the metal fencing was necessary for the lower part of the fencing.

When walking out to the garden, I’m always cautiously searching in all directions for snakes (one got away last night and Vince killed one this morning).

I noticed this guy:

He was happily munching away on the weeds outside the fence but I’ll bet he was trying to figure out how he could get on the other side of the fence to where the tender veggies and juicy cantaloupe are located.  Sorry Bunny!

Then I got a little too close and he decided to forget about his snack and head back to the security of the woods but I’ll bet he comes back.  The longer it goes without raining, the more the deer, rabbits, and other critters will come closer to homes to get the food and water they need.  The deer are already drinking out o the tank we have for the cows.  When I’m out at the sewing room and go back to the house after dark, they’re right there at the tank and they scare me to death when they take off running and I think I’m alone out there.

I have enough water to share for now so I’ll put some containers out so the short creatures can get themselves a drink.   But, they had better stay out of my garden!!  :)

It’s Not a Turtle

Have you seen that commercial where the lady jumps into the back of a police car thinking it’s a taxi?  That’s how I felt this morning.  My wakeup call comes way too early . . especially since I stayed up til after 1 a.m. trying to get more progress done on the baby blanket and the air conditioner woke me up at 5 and the air conditioner repairman tells me “that’s just how that brand sounds”!  Vince is calling him to come back today . . it’s way too noisy when it shuts off.  Anything that wakes me up has to be really loud!

DSC01692I was going out, in my usual half awake state, and I saw what I thought was a huge turtle.  I ran back in the house to get Vince and to get my camera.  What a great blog post I was going to have . . a giant turtle in my yard!  At this point, I realized I didn’t have my glasses on.  I usually put them on before even getting out of bed and keep them on til I turn off the lights to go to sleep.  There’s a good reason why I wear glasses!  I told Vince “Come see what’s in the yard!”

He was a bit apprehensive because he wasn’t sure what was out there  . . snake, mountain lion, coyote . . could be most anything around here.

But as we cautiously walked up to the turtle, things looked completely different than they had looked without my glasses.

Do you see how it kinda looks like a turtle?

It is not a turtle!  It’s a stump!  A stump with a “head” that makes it look like a turtle to an old lady without her glasses!

We must get that stump grinder out here and grind down about 200 stumps and I must never again leave the house without my glasses!
