The Nesco Roaster

Yarn Report Week 5, 2014

For about a month now I’ve been using the Nesco roaster instead of the oven. My plan is that this summer, I’ll stick the roaster on the front porch and use it instead of heating up the kitchen with the oven. Even without considering the heating aspect, with the cost of propane up so high right now, it has to be less expensive to run the Nesco roaster and it does a great job with anything that needs to be baked or roasted.

The model that I have is the 12 quart and it has convection, which is simply a fan at the top back which can be turned on or off. The fan blows the air around and helps with browning and cooking a bit faster without raising the temperature.

There are larger and smaller size roasters, as well as other brands. This is my second Nesco and I’ve been very happy with them. I can see the following uses for them:

  • Use on the porch or garage instead of heating up the kitchen with the oven.
  • Use when you need a bit more oven space.
  • Take along with a covered dish when going to someone’s home for a meal and you aren’t sure if they’re going to have oven space.
  • Great for camping if you have electricity available.
  • Great for anything that might splatter and make a mess. Instead of having to clean the regular oven, the insert to the Nesco comes out and can be washed in the kitchen sink.

After using mine several times a week for the past month, I can’t believe it was stuck in storage for 2-1/2 years and I had totally forgotten about it. That won’t happen again.

Ours lives on a table on our back porch year round and is used a lot…especially in the summer. we like baby back ribs cooked in there….low heat…about 200….for 4 or 5 hours. falling off the bone. yum!

Thank you for the information. I’ve seen them before, but always like to have a recommendation from someone who actually uses the product and has nothing to gain from talking about it.
I love roasted veggies, roast chicken, etc. and in the summer it is just too hot to turn the oven on.
    This sounds like the answer.

I *love* my roaster! I think I’m on my 4th one. This one isn’t a Nesco – I was desperate this past Thanksgiving and couldn’t find a Nesco anywhere, so I bought an inexpensive roaster Kroger was selling. It works GREAT but doesn’t have the convection thingy like yours. I don’t care. I have a hard time cooking for our family get-togethers without a roaster!

Thanks for answering my question. I was thinking of getting a convection oven when my stoves dies it’s about 20 years old and the parts to fix it are getting harder and harder to fine. I can remember my Mom putting the toaster oven outside for baking during the summer in Arizona.

I love this! Like I said before, this is on my “wish list” and the more I see about it and how much you love it, I am hoping to get it off the list and into my house soon.

Those are just wonderful roasters, I havo one as well as both my daughters. They come in mighty handy for alot of roasting instead of using the oven.
