I am putting the finishing touches on my fun mentor post, which will appear in the blog Sunday. However, I wanted to interrupt my very busy, busy day (hear that Judy) to thank all of you that read and especially those who commented on PFTR yesterday. Your continuing support is key to keeping me around. There are so many JDs (Judy Duties) I need to accomplish, the only way I can explain some lack of progress is with your supportive comments. This is true especially in her absence because the VDs don’t go away. Catchy acronym don’t you think? Well I have one even better for you. My parents in their great wisdom gave me a middle name starting with a D. So guess what my nickname was in college? Yup, you got it! Friends of mine would make a point of calling me by my nickname whenever it appeared there might be a potential date in the works. Oh well, those were the good ol days.
It’s a bright sunny but cool day in the Heart of Texas. I don’t know if Judy ever told you but we live about 20 miles from the geographical center of the State and thus the reason for the descriptive name.
Rita and I were up early today. After breakfast we caught up on the news and emails and then I headed to my shop. No time for reading facebook posts today and there were no phone calls from you know who checking up on me. It was a good morning.
Rita and I just finished lunch and now we are very briefly watching an update on the hurricane. I am keeping the kefir going, another JD I agreed to perform. I do enjoy drinking it, so I guess it’s not fair calling it a JD. I now see the start of a new acronym, JVDs. We just love acronyms . . can you tell?
There was excitement in the air yesterday afternoon when I drove down the driveway to our mailbox There was a big box setting at the corner of our gate. I wondered what that could be because I couldn’t immediately think of anything I ordered. As I got closer to the package I could read the label and guess to whom it was addressed? Yup, you got it! What has she ordered now I asked myself? Even when she is away, packages keep coming. I started to lift the box and, oh my, it was heavy. This is some really dense yarn I thought. I loaded the box in the back of my car and drove it back to the house. To my surprise, when I opened the box, guess what I found. WAX! The wax, which I was chastised about last week, had arrived. So now, in about two weeks, I can start drilling the oak and inserting the mushroom mycelia. I would apologize for thinking Judy would order more yarn, but I read her post earlier today where she revealed she did indeed order more yarn.
I had better get off of here and get back to work before the phone rings. Oh, one more thing, Judy explained to me yesterday that I can respond to your comments directly on the blog. So if there is something you want more explanation on or an answer, I will try to comply. I can’t promise it will be immediate or always possible because you know the JDs are waiting on me!
Have a Good Day Vince PS Music playing in the shop today is Bon Jovi. Give it a listen and you can pretend you are here JDing with me. 🙂 Who knows, you might even get a phone call. 🙂
Judy H says
LOL – sounds like you’re doing well! Better get on those JDs! 🙂
Jen says
Your JDs aren’t exceeding your 2 hour daily work allotment, are they?
Vince Laquidara says
Exceedances that is. I don’t know where that excrescences came from but it caused me to learn a new word today. Just another opportunity Excrescences = a distinct outgrowth on a human or animal body or on a plant, especially one that is the result of disease or abnormality. Who knew!
Carolyn says
You sound as content as my hubby does when I’m away from home. Good for you! Now where can I take a trip to? Maybe I should go fill up my gas tank.
pat says

Valerie J. Zagami says
Can’t wait for the mushroom adventures. Sadly I had a friend with the initials VD and it was not fun for her as teens can be ugly! You are a busy man. thanks for sharing.
Patti Tappel says
All that wax, I though surely judy was using it to seal canning jars. I never k ew it was used in mushrooming!
I keep looking for a Lake Ozark house ? for you guys.
Vince Laquidara says
Judy isn’t much on TV, but she did get hooked on that TV show Ozark. I’m sure she would take the house those folks lived in. Only thing is, when I researched the shooting location, I found it was in Georgia! Thanks for helping. Vince
Bon says
Sounds like between the JD and the VD lists, you are one busy fella.
Tricia says
You didn’t remember ordering 33 pounds of wax?! It was a big deal when you ordered it here on JL’s blog! There was a guessing game and prizes, cake and balloons…
Vince Laquidara says
Tricia, I didn’t forget. The shipping label threw me off. I am glad there was a pre-arrival celebration. Vince
Nelle Coursey says
But you do miss her!! LOL

Vince, I love your posts. Can’t wait for the mushroom adventure to begin! You haven’t mentioned the chickens or the cats. You haven’t forgotten them, have you? Keep busy now. Judy will be home before you know it and you will miss your peace and quiet.
Vince Laquidara says
Chicken and cats are going fine and everybody gets attention everyday. Thank you for asking.Vince

I’ve loved your blogging since you started the last time! I even asked Judy what had happened to your blogging. I do have a comment about mushrooms. I grew up until I was 15 in Iowa, I remember mushroom hunting season but was never invited along so I didn’t know where to look ect. And I’m sure the type of mushrooms I’m talking about and have been craving since Judy spoke about your new adventure isn’t grown in Texas or perhaps isn’t even grown at all but for in the wild, anyhow they look like a tan Christmas Trees. I’m sure I can ask my son what they are called and you can tell me if it’s possible for a person to grow them or if a person just has to travel to the central parts of the USA and go hunting for them around and under dead fallen trees.
Keep on blogging Vince!
Your fan
Jeri

Morel mushrooms?
Vince Laquidara says
Kristin, Judy did a few posts on the types of mushrooms we are growing and provided links that can do a better job than me of providing more details. If you can’t find them, please ask Judy for the links. Thank you. Vince
Jeri Niksich says
That’s the ones Kristin, thank you. And they grow in the spring. I sure wish there was a way to buy them. I’m in South Texas so there is NO WAY they would grow down here darn it.
Vince Laquidara says
For some reason, I can’t open some of the comments so I will place a general comment here. I am just learning about mushrooms. I would love to be able to hunt them, but in our climate, they don’t seem to be very plentiful. The most we have ever seen growing naturally was after that storm we had a few weeks ago, when the ambient temperature dropped. I am very hesitant to eat those growing in the wild because I have never had someone mentor me on those that are edible. Because there are thousands of varieties, I don’t trust pictures in books. I know the unique kinds we are growing don’t grow wild here, so if those that emerge from the logs match the pictures, I feel pretty safe eating them. Of course Judy will try them first, so I will let you know how that turns out! 😉 Vince

Oh, I’m glad I wasn’t drinking anything when I read that last line! Bad boy, Vince!

Vince, I would love to know how you made the vacunm thing for jars? Judy told us about it but I didn’t understand how such a thing could be made to suck air out of jars. Please explain if possible. Needs to be easy explanation if possible to. I think I would like to make one.
I really enjoy your post look forward to reading them and so will my husband. He is chair bound now and needs a laugh every once in awhile.I read him Judy’s funny chicken post and others all the time.
Have a great time with doing mushrooms to and hope next year you get to go to the mushroom festival in Maddisonville.

Whenever I get an idea, I do a search on the internet, which includes YouTube, to see if anyone else has tried it. Search with the phrase “build vacuum chamber with canner”. I used a vacuum pump, a canner, numerous fitting and tubing. Sure enough, there are videos on designs similar to what I made. However, I can’t emphasis enough that both pressure and vacuum can be very dangerous and shouldn’t be messed with unless you really understand the dangers. If you find something that you think will work for you, I would consult with an auto mechanic. They work with vacuums in cars. I’m sorry but for liability reasons, I can’t suggest more than research your idea and have a qualified professional help you.

Bon Jovi? Good choice. I saw them about 30 years ago in concert. They put on a great show! I still enjoy them.
Lisa Simon says
Vince, you are too funny!
dezertsuz says
There are lots of Bon Jovi songs I love. It sounds like you and Rita are having lovely days together. From the number of mentions of Judy, I suspect you might be missing her. =)
