We waited til it got to be 31 degrees, then put on layers and two pairs of gloves (rubber disposable waterproof gloves under heavy warm gloves), headlamps, hats and went out to spray the fruit trees, hoping for a good coating of ice on them overnight. Earlier this afternoon Vince had strung up hoses to reach from the house to way out in the orchard because the orchard well is only solar powered. The sun goes down . . there’s no water out there.
By the time we came in, it was 29 and felt like 24 out there. It was cold and about the time I thought I was going to freeze, a gust of wind would blow water in my face.
There’s Vince way out in the orchard with his headlamp.
He did the trees on the other side of the fence. I did the trees on this side. I had about half as many to do as he had. We get to do this again Monday and Tuesday nights . . then we’ll be back up in the 70’s. Crazy.
As I was out there, I could hear the heaters in the chicken coop; the heater is running in the greenhouse, Cat’s heated house is plugged in though I don’t think she ever goes in there, and her heat lamp is on and she was sitting under it. I thought . . all the critters and the greenhouse are toasty warm . . just Vince and I are out here freezing!
We’ve done all we can do. If we lose this year’s crop, it isn’t because we didn’t try to save it.

Wishing y’all all the best……we’re to be 3-6 (depending on which channel you listen to) degrees tonight and 70 by Friday. It sure is crazy all over the U.S.
