This is the pattern that had me thinking about ordering yarn this morning. It calls for DK weight and I do have plenty of that here. I would want a solid color and a color that isn’t terribly dark because the darker the yarn, the less the design shows up.
After looking at yarn on the Madelinetosh site, and having the discussion with Vince about my yarn ordering, I went stash diving and these are the options I came up with. I actually love them all! I’m also including my opinions, and thoughts after reading some of the Ravelry reviews for each yarn. I feel a bit critical and normally, I don’t think I’m a critical person, especially when it comes to yarn. I tend to love, really LOVE, it all but I do have a decision to make here, right?
Victory DK by Knitted Wit
I’ve had this in my stash for a very long time. The color absolutely makes me drool! I think this is yarn I ordered from an indie dyer. Ahhh . . the advantage to never cleaning out your email – I bought this through Etsy in 2014.
Ravelry: There are only 5 projects shown using this yarn and no real reviews.
Madelinetosh Longrider DK
Color: Rose Amethyst
This is another color I love.
Ravelry: Everyone seems pretty happy with it.
Blue Moon Yaksi
Color: Kate’s Blue
This yarn may be a bit too dark for the design to show up nicely. This is 60% wool, 20% yak and 20% silk so it should be a pretty nice yarn.
Ravelry: Not many comments about it. It’s a discontinued yarn and I’m not real sure if that means it wasn’t a good seller or they just had problems getting the yarn.
Madelinetosh Tosh Merino DK
Normally, I would not use a single ply for a sweater but this yarn was probably meant to be a sweater. Tart is one of my all time very favorite colors from Madelinetosh.
Ravelry: One lady who used it for a sweater said “Don’t fear this single ply.” Someone else says “My new favorite yarn” then someone says “It grows like a weed” meaning when soaked, it totally loses its shape.
Madelinetosh DK Twist
Color: Particle Series/Tern
This yarn is so pretty and looks so classic to me. I’m afraid the speckle nature of the yarn might cause the design to be lost though. I think just a simple sweater would be much better for this color. I do love DK Twist yarn though.
Ravelry: Users seem to love it. The general feeling is that it knits up more like a worsted. The swatch will tell me all I need to know . . if I decide to use this one.
This is another favorite Madelinetosh color. I think I have it in almost all their bases that I use. Ravelry classes this yarn as Bulky weight but I think they used to call it Aran weight. Eat, Sleep, Knit says it is a “true Aran weight”. I think if I used this yarn, I could get the “calculator” badge because I’ll have to do some calculating since I’m using a different weight yarn.
One concern I have is . . what would I wear under it. With something white or tan under it, this Thyme color is going to get lost. I normally don’t wear really brightly colored tops so I’m just not sure what I would wear this sweater with.
I do have a good bit of this in my stash (Chunky) so I should use it and see how I feel about it.
Ravelry: It’s a love/hate relationship with this yarn. Some love it. Some hate it.
Color: Blue Gingham
The blue is more periwinkle than it appears in the picture. I’ve used Tosh DK in a sweater before. It’s one of my most worn sweaters and the yarn has held up great. I think this color would be great and pretty useful.
Ravelry: Reviews vary but since I’ve used it and know how it holds up, the Ravelry reviews aren’t so important to me.
I’ve told myself that I am not starting this project until I’ve finished at least two big projects and that doesn’t count the Comfort Fade Cardi. So . . tell me which one you think I should choose and please tell me why! Thanks!
